They lost against Linkin Park in 2012. And in 2013 they were only up against Black Sabbath (my guess would be their fans don't care much for such an event), The Killers, Kings of Leon and Queens of the Stone Age. These bands aren't really major these days, are they:ermm:

I know I voted like a mad man and no one believed me when I said they'll win an award that year and they did.

As much as I love Green Day, Twenty One Pilots has a damn large fanbase right now, consisting largely of defensive, emotionally unstable 12 year-olds. Kinda the reason I've distanced myself from their fandom, because the fans are straight up assholes. At least the die-hard, 'Josh Dun marry me' ones. Really hoping Green Day get this one.

This voting system just makes no sense anyway. Maybe it's normal nowadays, I have no idea, but it's a huge nonsense. Why they don't put at least a limit of 1 vote per IP adress? Fucking click baiting.

Kinda offtopic but, I love twenty one pilots but I agree so much with this, a year ago their fanbase was awesome, but ever since Stressed Out became a hit it's just a bunch of Tumblr girls seeking attention

Yeah exactly haha. The fanbase filled up with a lot of fake fans who declare themselves top's biggest fans because they like Stressed Out. They're a great band, but their fanbase is pretty out there.

I'm pretty shocked that this year only rock (and metal) bands are nominated in rock cathegory.

Because every time you vote you get served with an image of their sponsors: more votes = more impressions = more revenue.

Yeah it was more a rhetoric question. The point is that I can expect this from a random music website organising a random contest. But gosh, MTV, do they really need this stuff? It's just embarrassing.

Nominees: Best rock

  • Coldplay
  • Green Day
  • Metallica
  • Muse
  • Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Nominees: Best live

  • Adele
  • Beyonce
  • Coldplay
  • Green Day
  • Twenty One Pilots

New Metallica reminds me of their old stuff, they could win, but other than that, I think Green Day should win. Also, why the fuck is Coldplay on 'Best Rock'? Makes no sense.

Best live goes down for Green Day. Period.

Green Day was out for a while... I saw Twenty One Pilots at Lollapalooza Argentina and Coldplay at La Plata Stadium earlier this year and they made awesome shows! I think best live for this year goes for Coldplay.

I'm afraid you are right. They had a massive tour (not sure if it is still going on) and Green Day is only starting to get their tour going.

I think Green Day will miss out on both awards, though I'm crossing my fingers for the best rock award.
Since they won in 2005, 2009 and 2013 (4 years between each win) it would be cool if they at least win an award next year.

Best live??

they've played one proper show this year, it was 2 days ago and not in Europe.

Are MTV Europe smoking crack?

Yeah that's kind of odd . And really surprised Muse aren't nominated for live when they nearly always are and they've just done a world tour.

Still cool that they're nominated! Not too sure of their chances to win but nice they're on the radar enough to be recognised either way.

Also just saw the "fun facts" on there:

fun facts

from: east bay, california

debut: 39/smooth

big break: 'kerplunk'

Not too sure about that one :P

I haven't considered MTV a reputable source for anything music since maybe the early 2000's when you could still catch music videos on at times that weren't 4 AM. lol

Not that I think they're ever really wrong about anything, I just feel like they kind of left the music biz' and now they're like "Please can we come back, we got rid of Bret Michaels."

Well I guess you could look at it as being the album that sparked major-label interest and ultimately led to them being signed and creating Dookie.  But that's clutching at straws :P

Also the 'greenday' & U2 collab, and the suggestion the the American Idiot musical is  a Broadway 'play'.

Maybe they're not nominated for recent touring, which obviously didn't take place in Europe, but more for their lifework. I mean, they've been around for almost 30 years and still rock the fuck out of each show and are successful in convincing new, young fans of their music. That is quite an achievement and something really, really rare... To me, GD is the best live band and will always be, even if they're in their 90s rocking in their wheelchairs (that would be fun, actually!)  They deserve the award 10.000 times.

Yup. I've seen Muse live in Amsterdam last March. It's not really my kind of band, but my friend had a spare ticket.... so hey.... why not? I have to say they put on a pretty impressive show with very cool effects. They even had drones flying around the place. Downside is that it's all so well directed that it becomes a bit clinical. There's hardly any interaction with the crowd. But I certainly expected them to be amongst te nominees.
