letsdanceon
My first time was also on the insomniac tour with the riverdales. I don't remember much because it was a big arena and I was in boring seats instead of on the floor like I wanted. I do know that I wrote down the set list and any funny quotes/moments from my seat though, and I still have that in a scrapbook somewhere. There wasn't much interaction with the audience, but billie joe had a lot of silly/offensive one-liners that I was embarrassed to be sitting with my dad for 😜
BenSilent
If I resume : They used to play for 40 /45 minutes with one/two songs filled with blabla with the crowd. Now they play for 2h30 BUT we can hear hey hos in almost every song . I don't wanna be misunderstood, I'm pretty sure it's 90% me not being attached to any record post Warning that makes me grumpy. Also things have changed in the music industry : bands don't sell albums anymore, they make money by playing shows, shows are expensive (I saw Blink in 1999 for about 4euros), it's great some bands play for 2h hours (Foo Fighters are one of them two). I don't complain about the length, the hey hos (...mmmmmh yes I complain about that), I complain about being old and needing more old school green day. That was a really cool tour. I don't remember a ton from the actual show, but I remember special moments (crowd rushing in during Armatage, kid in front of me puking during 86, being shocked at Billie's nude encore, Tre chucking sticks way up in the air at the end of each song, etc.). I do remember it being a real "awakening" moment where it was like "this is a rock show...this is how it's done". That night I'm sure they turned hundreds if not thousands of impressionable kids like me into huge rock fans for life. And they did it all tour and have done it for decades since. What a way to create an impact- and create a legacy.

I miss younger/angst fast and furious songs setlist GD's gig from 90s and 2000s, I wish the RevRad-Billie should stop yaking to audience and stop taking some people up on stage and focus on performance, because from what I saw from some of recently live show from Youtube. It is kind of boring and setlist as well. I have skip to where he is performance "King for a-Day" and Basket case/She" because it is always my fave. AimieeSmith
Yeah but back in it was only one or two songs stretched out . Now we have Holiday , 2000 Light Years Away , Minority , Hitchin' A Ride , KFAD , American Idiot , Letterbomb I also feel by stopping half way through the song you lose the energy and momentum . All of the unnecessary speeches and theatrics are good but they get boring and repetitive after a while . We could have had a few new song's from Revolution Radio instead . It's such an awesome old tradition for them to make a band (or at least get a guitar player - when they used to actually make a whole band in the early 2000s it took like 20 minutes which is pushing it a bit even for me lol) and give props to another Gilman band that inspired them by covering it. Also until this tour they hadn't played it that regularly for a while, it was my sixth GD show but the first time I saw them play it so I considered it a real treat. Oh I agree, it's a nice addition, when it was just that for bringing people on stage it was cool. The full band on stage did take fiercer though. I wish they would just play Longview by themselves though
Minority_GD
I've seen them four times since January, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but the shows start to get boring. Just yesterday I was looking at the setlist of a gd show I went to in 2010 and I can't believe how many songs they've cut since then. (Come one, where did Brain Stew go?) I get that we are not really the audience the setlist is targeted at, because let's be honest 99% of the people at the shows are perfectly happy with the setlist simply because they aren't as insane as we are and only see the band every once in a while. They might even enjoy King for a Day.. Still, I think they're playing it too safe. It seems like they're scared that someone in the audience might not know one song and therefore only play the most well known ones. (It almost feels like a greatest hits tour)

(It almost feels like a greatest hits tour) It's not really that they've cut songs though, it's that they've released more albums so they have to replace some . Have they ever done a tour that wasn't almost the same setlist every night and basically a greatest hits tour for the time? I don't think they really have. I mean I get that it probably does get repetitive seeing it multiple times but that's because it's not designed to be seen multiple times, like you say 99% of people aren't doing that and they're not going to design a show for 1% of the crowd. I agree with you about them being scared of the audience not knowing songs and I do think they could be "braver" if they wanted because they underestimate how happy people would still be if there were a few more songs they weren't as familiar with. But the thing is I don't think they necessarily want to do that whether they could do it successfully or not. I don't think they're sadly wishing they could play more not as well known songs and denying themselves for the sake of the crowd - I think they enjoy their old favourites as well and value crowd reaction so highly that they're genuinely more than happy to choose which songs to play based on that. Could be wrong but I get that impression, I think they love performing this carefully crafted show and seeing great reactions to it every night. MillenniumFan
Yeah, this is probably the 100th time I've said it in this thread, but BRING ''BRAIN STEW'' BACK PLEASE! Plus more from 21CB, more from Insomniac and Nimrod, less from AI and some different songs from RevRad (get rid of Ordinary World for example). Also, change one or two songs each night, it's not that hard, it really isn't...

Hermione
Yeah having said that I would also like Brain Stew back lol. All songs where they do fun extras are top of my list. They change four songs every night (largely rotate the same ones) but in the same spots. Keeping that in mind Green Day could easily go: Letterbomb or (Murder City, SWTRLF, EJN) 2000 Light Years Away or (Pasalaqua, Paper Lanterns, Holden Caufield) Hitchin A Ride or (Nice Guys Finish Last, Geek Stink Breath) AWTW/ST Jimmy or (Brain Stew/Jaded) Similar type/ era songs just on rotation whilst keeping all the hits and new songs

We know they can/ want to take the "braver" approach- case in point, the Webster show (which was the best I'd seen in possibly 20 yrs) was a great example. Same setlist structure as the rest of the tour, but they just decided to go crazy in the middle of the set and absolutely brought the house down with about 5 or 6 songs in the middle that were completely random and organically in the moment (Private Ale, Nice Guys, Stuart, 409, Brat, Armatage, One of My Lies). Perhaps they feel this type of spontaneous approach would fall flat in an arena or festival, but I'd like to think it would be the opposite- I actually think this type of risk would be very well received by a large crowd as more people than they expect know the old gems. imXieli
on the note of them NEEDING to do less hits, here's an example. for my second concert ever I went to see Yellowcard (Final World Tour, sad i can't see them again.) at this point I hadn't really listened to that much of their material. I had heard "Ocean Avenue", "Only One", and "Rest In Peace" well before the day of the concert, and I listened to the album Ocean Avenue and their final record full through for the FIRST TIME earlier that day. I thought "they're pretty good i think i'm gonna enjoy this BUT IT WONT BE AS GOOD AS GREEN DAY WAS" and I went to the concert and I swear to god i didn't know about 80% of the setlist. BUT, you bet your ass I do now. Some of their least known songs are the ones that caught my ear. Lift A Sail, October Nights (that's on their first album with Ryan Key as the lead singer), Empty Apartment (latter two they did acoustic, fuckin incredible) are now three of my favorite songs by them. How many of you actually knew what songs those names were instead of just going "wtf is that"? probably not many, i don't expect too many people on this board to know much of Yellowcard, haha. but even for casual yellowcard fans, those are kind of the "back catalog". after that concert I fell in love with them. i began listening to them non stop in the same way I would with Green Day, and they're now one of my favorite bands next to GD, My Chemical Romance, Ramones, and Led Zeppelin. keeping that story in mind, I think Green Day should take one from their books and do less hits as it will show what Green Day REALLY is, not just what the shitty mainstream edited fucking radio shows (lookin @ u edited jesus of suburbia) on a regular basis. i went to the Green Day concert at starland ballroom and i fucking wish i had brought a huge sign that said "PLAY CIGARETTES AND VALENTINES OR HAVING A BLAST" because they're my favorite songs, and you're damn right the crowd would've loved those songs. they're gems, just like almost EVERYTHING ELSE IN GREEN DAY'S BACK CATALOG. PLAY SOMETHING DIFFERENT GODDAMMIT.

The songs Green Day play aren't shitty though, they're some of their best songs which they've probably picked to release as singles or play a lot because they think they're the best. Having been played edited on the radio doesn't lower the quality of the song, and not being as well known doesn't raise the quality. Of course they have hidden gems that would be great to see as well but that doesn't mean what they do play is bad. The way I see it pretty much all GD songs are great songs that are great to see live however "rare" or not they are. I don't get the rareness being such an important factor as long as it's a good song and entertaining performance.

Jonas01
So during the festival gigs they have used the ''regular'' setlist, and yes it is dissapointing considering how big arsenal GD has of songs. But i think for them it's maybe hard to change the setlist, considering how great it actually is. But we just want a few songs out and a few more in. I really want to hear: Christie Road, Welcome to Paradise (WHY DON*T THEY PLAY THIS????), Going to pasalacqua, wake me up when september ends, 21 guns, east jesus nowhere (best live song imo), 21st century breakdown, stray heart, the forgotten, say goodbye, we are the champions, restless heart syndrome, brain stew, whatsername.
