New shows setlist discussion

Hands down to the boys for playing so many shows at so little time... Just think of the latest days? After pinkpop they had what was it 3 concerts in a row? That is just mental. And think of the US leg too, that was also very ''tight'' program you know...

Has Billie not taken a request from someone in the crowd yet ? or can'r they play anymore songs due to noise curfews .

Did hey ditch Christie Road?

Yes...

It looks like they're going to play the same setlist at every show in Europe. It's really great set and everything sounds phenomenally live, but from the other hand it's a little bit sad that they don't feel the need to change something from time to time. I don't want them to create brand new setlist every evening, but changing only one song at every show would really make the difference.

I hate them I hate them I hate them haha. They didn't play it in Prague and I was hoping that if they don't change their setlist, I'll at least get to see this classic as it seemed to be a staple now. Oh well

I agree, even a small change would be a nice surprise. I know I won't complain (and I can't because being able to see them multiple times is a privilege if anything) but still...they could do it and they should haha

Well now, I haven't been called that in awhile, usually the words are much harsher than that.  I will take it as a sign of love.

Hi, first time here, long time Green Day fan but pre-AI period.

Got to see them twice this year in Paris... and I wish there would be more old songs on the set list and less "HeeeeeeeeeeeeeYYYYYYYyyyyy OOOoooooooOOoohhhhhhh"...

Saw them last sunday after Rancid ans Prophets Of Rage and Green Day felt a bit meeeeeeh to me, even though everyone around seemed to have a good time.

I guess I'm the kind of guy who lives in the past with that band.

Don't get me wrong, I love when there's interactions with the crowd, I love when teens get to go on stage with them, but cut 30 minutes of "hey ho" and put any 1039 to warning songs in exchange and the show is perfect.

Welcome - yeah I agree - they need to spice it up a bit - Sydney proved they didn't need to do the same thing every night - also glad you saw Rancid - Im still hoping & dreaming.

Haha, I'm also a way pre-AI period fan and I remember complaining about hey-oh even during the Warning tour (I remember some fans walking out of the show kind of mockingly doing the hey-oh thing and it irritated me a little). So I think it's here to stay. But then again, I think I've seen them about 15 times during/ since the AI tour so I must not be bothered by it all that much but also completely agree- a no-bullshit/ straightforward set would be far preferable to the hey-oh/ King For A Day thing, but again that's been discussed quite a bit on this forum and it's not changing anytime soon.

Also, I think I've seen Rancid 4 times. They're phenomenal. I wish they toured together more (this is the first time I can recall them touring together). What a great live band, I highly recommend seeing them to anyone that hasn't yet.

Remember in their younger days when they would just blast through songs so fast and hardly engage with the crowd ? omg how things have change shut up with the hey ho's Billie and we might get some more songs in

Never got the chance to see them before AI... sadly...

I think it's mainly because I pretty much identify myself in every album pre-AI, it was my era, I was 12 when Dookie came out and the goosebump I got with any new album release disappeared with AI. So when I got to see them for the first time 5 years ago (I think...) I thought I had missed an opportunity not to see them when I used to have these feelings. (hard to explain, my english is realy rusty).

anyway... I love how they seem to have fun on stage and think it's great for them that they touched 2 or 3 generations. :D

I saw em in 95 on the Insomniac tour and it was less than 40 mins I think Billie said hello and goodnight wasn't much talking

Not really, they've been doing hey ohs/call and response with the crowd, talking to the crowd and each other between songs and making songs last 10 or 15 minutes (eg Paper Lanterns or Knowledge) while messing around/playing bits of covers since Dookie. Maybe they blasted through a bit more pre-Dookie but even then there was plenty of talking and messing around going on. They've never really been a band that just blasts through songs. Reading this thread it seems like quite a lot of people think they were for some reason but you can watch pretty much any complete show (not a shorter event like a tv special etc, just a regular arena show) from the 90s and see that's not the case.

I mean their shows have changed over the years. But the amount of songs they play has gone up not down.

Really? I guess it depended on the show then. Still if the whole show was 40 mins you definitely weren't getting more songs than now anyway :P

It was about 18-19 songs Knowledge was the only song I remember them stretching out  if my show was over 40 mins it wasn't by much my dad dropped me off and got home and said 10 mins later I was calling to be picked up we lived 30-40 mins away from the venue

Not bad! Depends on the show of course but I remember Paper Lanterns being ridiculously stretched out from that time, watching it you start to feel sorry for Mike and Tre having to keep playing the same thing for so long while Billie does call and response and throws water etc . I just don't think the difference is as big as people make out. Reading this thread anyone would think they never used to do anything except play songs as fast as possible and had a different setlist every night. When really doing stuff other than playing songs, stretching the odd song out and unvaried setlists aren't new things at all even if it might've been in slightly different amounts now.

Just an example, got to love the hey ohs at 4:00 during this 9:38 long Paper Lanterns performance

I'd hate it if they started just ripping through songs like any band could do. They've built a reputation as one of the best live bands because they've always done more than that. I don't care what the total tally of songs they play is as long as I'm being entertained.

Same here! First show was when the Riverdales opened for them in '95 on the Insomniac tour. Green Day opened with Armatage, blazed through the set, and ended with Road to Acceptance and then a nude (Billie style) version of Road to Acceptance/ Jaded. It was like they hit us with a chainsaw and were out. Probably 45 minutes max and tickets were 15 bucks. And this was in an arena that was packed. I've loved how they've evolved and completely love this era right now, but those were special times. Those were awesome shows. However, I'm not complaining about the shows now either- they still kick ass, just in a different way. And considering it's 22 years later, we're just damn lucky to still have them around.

Edit: I saw them in the same arena this spring, and Hermione can vouch for this since I have shared the evidence: I saw them in the same arena 22 yeas after the first show mentioned above and pointed out where I had sat (in the nosebleeds) to Billie. He had no idea what I was talking about until I mentioned that it was during the "Riverdales" show. He was like "oh yeah, awesome!". And then during soundcheck he started walking the arena with the mic and went up to those seats, and snarled "wow, these seats suck".  Classic.
