New shows setlist discussion

They do play about 28-30 at most shows on tour. After 2 and whatever hours, your body prepares to drop. It's like, shit, we better do JOS before we drop dead from playing for so long.

See, I was right. 28 songs, are we allowed to talk about it here? Being the setlist discussion thread, anybody who does not want spoilers should not read it. Even though there is not a single spoiler. :ga:

Disappointing setlist, nothing really new or unusual (except for Jaded). Even the "deep cuts" are always the same, like Christie Road or Scattered (although I love these songs).

Why the hell you put a lyric video of Say Goodbye and never play it live? Makes no sense. Hope this is only the beginning and they will make some changes but feeling rather pessimistic about it. Also as everyone pointed KYE as a opener is kind of borind, even during the 21st CB era it didn't play this role.

To the positive point, I like that they decided to keep at least Forever Now at the arena shows.

6 new songs, that's pretty good!  A lot of people complain about the set lists but I think they are doing just fine.

Deep cuts are awesome, but I'd go the opposite route and play more hits.  Instead of 18 hits and 10 album cuts, I'd do 24 hits and then 4 songs that switch out every night (from fan favorites to super rare, never-heard before songs).   And at some of the shows, just a freaking non-stop greatest hits set.

But that's me.  I think Green Day are masters of the live music world and simply do it better than any other band out there.   They can do however they like because they are epic.

They better not drop Burnout completely, its only like 2 and half minutes or something. That was keeping the shows up on Dookie shit. Somewhere Now should definitely be done, and Brain Stew and Jaded can't be done every night, you would think they will get bored of those quick. Love Scattered, glad that's there. And WTP, Christie Road.

It's a good set list but at the same time it feels stale. It'd be nice if they pulled out some more random stuff from Insomniac and Kerplunk like they did at the smaller shows last year. I also wish there we're at least a couple from the trilogy. I don't see why they can't at least play Stay the Night or Oh Love. Also find it weird that Know Your Enemy is the opener.. why not open with Somewhere Now? and not to be even more picky, but it'd be nice if they played another track off of Breakdown for a change!

I haven't seen any videos yet but I can already say that Know Your Enemy as an opener is bad imo. They shouldn't even be playing that song at all anymore, but fuck opening with it.

I would guess they might play more political songs on the American leg

Know Your Enemy isn't a terrible opener, but when you have Somewhere Now it just makes no sense.

Just watched the video from Perth 2014 where Billie played a verse-chorus of Redundant (with fans singing the chorus) and realized how much I want to hear that song full live. Such a beautiful and underrated melody.

I don't think Somewhere Now would be a good opener, it's a bit too slow for that in my opinion. I see why they're opening with Know Your Enemy but it's still extremely weird.

Alltogether, the setlist is how I expected it to be. They dropped all the very good old stuff (Armatage Shanks, Private Ale) and just played their regular stuff. I know that they can't drop all of their singles but BOBD or King For A Day have been the same for decades now, they should switch it up a little more :(
Maybe they're still warming-up and trying things out and it's cool that they're ignoring the trilogy and 21stCB but I doubt we will see major changes for this touring cycle.

That's what I posted in another thread a while ago:

My ideal Green Day setlist would look completely different of course but I tried to create one that is more realistic and similar to the setlists they're currently playing.
I just want them to drop their most annoying song ever (King For A Day) as well as their old "rarities" they always play (Burnout, Christie Road, Hitchin A Ride,...) and replace them with songs they don't usually play. They have an enormous catalogue and songs like Sassafras Roots, Worry Rock and Jackass are just examples and could be replaced by any other song obviously.
I know other people want them to drop Jesus of Suburbia but this song is just too good to be dropped. Minority shouldn't be extended that much though.

In addition, I hate their acoustic encore, shows should end with a banger, therefore Going To Pasalacqua seems to be a good choice just like in Sacramento 2009.
As I said, this is not my dream setlist since there are still too many singles in it but you can't drop them all. But I don't see any problem with replacing some regular old songs with other ones. I don't really like their structure anymore but it's too complicated to create a structure since there are lots of things you have to consider.
Maybe 32 songs would be a bit too long nowadays, 30 should be okay.

1. Bang Bang
2. Revolution Radio
3. Know Your Enemy
4. Holiday
5. Letterbomb
6. Boulevard of Broken Dreams
7. Longview
8. Private Ale
9. Armatage Shanks
10. Stuart and the Ave.
11. 409 in Your Coffeemaker
12. Brat
13. One of My Lies
14. I Was There
15. Sassafras Roots
16. Worry Rock
17. Scattered
18. Jackass
19. J.A.R.
20. Are We the Waiting
21. St. Jimmy
22. Basket Case
23. She
24. Say Goodbye
25. Waiting
26. Still Breathing
27. Forever Now

Encore:

28. American Idiot
29. Jesus of Suburbia
30. Too Dumb To Die
31. Minority
32. Going To Pasalacqua

I'll always complain about all the time they waste. Yes, the played over 2 h 20 min but at least 35 min they're just wasting time. They could play a couple RevRad songs and a couple of other albums and they would still have enough time to waste. Also I think they play too much AI. And please, if they want to keep KFAD and Shout at least change the medley songs.

That being said, I think this would be a really kick ass setlist:

  • Revolution Radio
  • Bang Bang
  • Say Goodbye
  • Holiday
  • Letterbomb
  • Boulevard of Broken Dreams
  • Murder City
  • Longview
  • Youngblood/ Too Dumb to die
  • Welcome to Paradise
  • Brain Stew
  • Jaded
  • Christie Road
  • Scattered
  • Hitchin' a Ride/ Stuck With Me
  • Waiting
  • Pasalacqua
  • When I Come Around
  • Basket Case
  • She
  • Redundant (or any" slow" song)
  • Paper Laterns (or an "oldie")
  • Nuclear family (trilogy song)
  • Still Breathing
  • Forever Now

  • American Idiot
  • Jesus of Suburbia
  • Outlaws
  • Minority

  • Ordinary World
  • Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)

Good point, that's something I hate about their live shows as well. Stop extending Brain Stew by shooting with water pistols, stop extending Minority to death, stop Heyhos (or all Heyhos in general...) in Hitchin' A Ride,....
Even Jesus of Suburbia would make space for 2-3 other songs if they stopped playing it.

What makes me a little unhappy about this new setlist is that the number of the songs from American Idiot (7) is still greater than the one of the songs from Revolution Radio (6).

Don't get me wrong. AI stuff is fucking great. But songs like Say Goodbye, Troubled Times and Too Dumb To Die absolutely deserve a place in the show. I'm getting bored of BOBD and Are We The Waiting/St. Jimmy (Bang Bang is a pretty similar song after all). So please: more RevRad (and one song from the Trilogy).

I'm happy about Waiting, because it means a lot to me since it describes my "waiting" for the concert (I'm so fucking happy I could cry).

I am quite ticked, I really don't care to see Brain Stew again. It is little more than a break for the band. Slow, boring, and the last song I would want to hear from Insomniac. Saw it on AI Tour and Jaded was the best part, if they are doing both it is dumb to not have them bleed into each other like the album and videos. Armatage Shanks and Geek Stink Breath would make the set a million times better, and they rock waaaayyyy fuckin' more! Then you get a rarity and a classic single, both with serious momentum! And Burnout needs to be there, lyrics, riffs and drums I must seeeee!!!

Say Goodbye, Outlaws and Too Dumb to Die desperately need to be added to the setlist, I don't understand why are they waiting any longer.

9 off RevRad would be way too many. We need room for old songs. Somewhere Now would definitely be nice though. Say Goodbye too but Outlaws is way too slow and not exciting enough for a live show.

i still think they should open with 'somewhere now' behind a large curtain and when it kicks in, the curtain drops and there's fucking confetti and everyone goes nuts.

The huge mistake about the setlist on Green Day shows is the "playing safe" thing. Too many songs from AI and some old stuff for many times. KFAD + Shout show is really predictable, less heeeeeoooos would be nice.

They should do the whole new album and do songs they haven't or rarely do. Doing the same thing over and over is so boring and predictable!

they should replace it with dominated love slave/like a rat does cheese. that way they could still have a jolly good time with the costumes, etc. and maybe include/incorporate a cover of a different song.of course, it's also a good opportunity to get Tre up from behind the drums.

I don't get wanting to hear Somewhere Now as the opener and then again in Forever Now.  Why does everyone want to hear it twice when you get to hear another option?
