First off, I'm not going to start a discussion about BLM, I usually have those cancerous conversations over on Candid xD, my only grievance was the pov Billie wrote if from I'm not wanting to go into detail here. I agree this isn't the thread for it. That is pretty interesting though how say goodbye might be more out and about, it would be more interesting to here Billie's perspective. Besides BLM, his views do seem very nuanced for someone living in the 21st century.

I don't know what Candid is, but I guess it isn't relevant to this thread. His statements aren't always nuanced (once working class, always working class, as he'd say), but I think he can easily sympathize with the grievances of someone from 'the other side' and I think that lends an aspect of universality to his lyrics, which we've seen in 21CB and now in RR. He explicitly stated that RR is not an album of anger, but one of joy and reconciliation and that joyous aspect is very audible sonically in this track.

I do think it's very admirable of Billie to share his opinions and sympathize with the other side, in fact, even though I'm not a BLM supporter I do sympathize with the struggle of black people in this country and hope true equality is achieved. I may have been harsh in my initial reaction to Billie's interpretation of his song lyrics, but that's just because I'm an opinionated and reactionary liberal xD. I do think Revolution Radio is going to be revRAD xD. Btw Candid is a cancerous anonymous posting app.

You're entitled to your own opinion, as is everyone under the First Amendment and everybody has to respect that. I also think RevRad is going to be rad. There are some songs (Somewhere Now, Forever Now, Too Dumb To Die) which I have been looking forward to since the first RS interview.

Yup, I can't just wait until the whole thing comes out. What's beautiful about the first ammendment is that I can argue with a rockstar's (I'm not using rockstar in a mean way) opinion about the world around us. Digging the Queen pic btw

Haha. Thanks. It was actually the first picture that caught my eye when I had to pick an avatar. It became this one, I think it was taken around the time they released A Night at the Opera in '75.

Indeed. I wish I could've seen him live.

Same, he was an amazing showman. At least we still got Billie Joe Armstrong, but I don't think you've ever heard of him... xD

I only heard something about this upstart California punk band called Sweet Children. Apparently they've released a new song recently

Well thanks a bunch to whatever idiot that posted it sounded like the Caillou theme song. Now that I've gotten the song stuck in my head I've been humming/ singing it all day. Problem is that it now goes like this in my head: "Revolution radio, operation no control, da da da da da da da, I'm Caillou. Never again will I compare Green Day to cartoons. Never.:lol:

You know, something I love about Green Day is that they've never been afraid to have an opinion about things that matter. They might not be activists and they might not present solutions to every problem, but at least they speak up about things that matter to them, whether I agree with every little thing or not (for the record, I think Billie's quotes on BLM are incredibly on point). Many famous people don't want to talk politics or social issues, and that's completely fine. But sometimes I get frustrated when artists don't use their power to introduce listeners to important problems. Do you know how many kids must've gotten more interested in politics when American Idiot came out? That's important. It didn't matter that the song American Idiot wasn't wildly specific, it mattered because it started a what could become a more nuanced conversation among listeners. It's important that Green Day brings attention to these issues, because many people are afraid to. I really respect them for that, and for remaining consistent with their socio-political messages over the years.

He said "destroy the phrase pop punk" as far as we know not even in relation to the new album (he randomly tweeted it around new years, before they were talking about it). He might've just meant he doesn't like the phrase, can't really take it as any kind of promise about new music.

I guess that's where it becomes a matter of opinion on whether they got across what they wanted to get across with the song. To me it does sound like a rallying cry, but I think there's room both for "rallying cry" songs that get into the specifics of an issue and "rallying cry" songs that express a more general feeling of concern. As the title track I'm not surprised this is more the latter, there's the whole rest of the album to get into the details. But even if it doesn't, who said he can't just express his own feelings about the situation being messed up without offering a solution (which he might not have!)? He hasn't signed up to lead a movement, he's a musician expressing his thoughts through music.

Green Day want to be known as a Rock N Roll band, not a Pop Punk band.  And while the songs we've heard from RevRad are catchy, I think they've done a good job at placing themselves into the Rock N Roll category.   Good Charlotte, New Found Glory, Simple Plan.....those are bands that I would say have not 'graduated' from the pop punk trappings and are still very much pop with not much more than a few drops of punk ethos (I'm not bashing those bands, I just think of them as 'pop punk' versus 'rock'.

Agreed.  Songs should always be open to interpretation.   If they want to make a bold statement with one of them, maybe a poignant music video would be a better direction.   Remember the music videos for Wake Me Up When September Ends, The Saints are Coming and Working Class Hero?   Those had hard hitting, powerful messages.   I shed tears for the people in those videos and they weren't really based on the lyrics at all.

I think "legalize truth" is a brilliant line. Very simple, but brilliant.

After listening to it a second time, this is my only favorite line

This song doesn't have the same hook that Bang Bang has for me but I did like it a little more after listening to it again

Agree ... not a bad song by any means, but it's not stuck in my head like Bang Bang is

It's definitely grown on me, the chorus and guitar in general is fantastic

So how long until Seagull starts shit-talking this song and claiming he always hated it

The chorus is great and the second verse grew on me, the solo is cool, but the song is just so by-the-books and forgettable.

This won't happen cause it's not Bang Bang. This song is awesome. This song is exactly what I wanted. No static sounds, lyrics that make sense, guitar solo and a chorus that is catchy.

I agree with you - it comes across as a NICE song considering the story it's portraying.
