Lilly89
Guys, I hope you can help me with this question. I think Bang Bang is related to the bad things going on in Paris back in 2016 or am I completely wrong? Is it about the violence in general? Can someone explain the meaning behind the song to me. I'm not sure anymore.
pouty bitch
I think it's just about gun violence in general. There are references to the Sandy Hook shooting of 2012 in the lyrics. This is what Billie said about it: "It’s about the culture of mass shooting that happens in America mixed with narcissistic social media. There’s this sort of rage happening, but it’s also now being filmed and we all have ourselves under surveillance. To me, that is so twisted. To get into the brain of someone like that was freaky. It freaked me out. After I wrote it, all I wanted to do was get that out of my brain because it just freaked me out."
pacejunkie punk
Billie also referenced a California shooting where the kid posted some video manifesto about girls ignoring him or something. It made him think about the celebrity these psychos are after.
CherryBombs&Gasoline
The interesting thing about music and art im general is that you can interpret it in different ways. In this specifc case, BJ explained the intention of the song but it isn't always like this. I think you call it intentional fallacy in literature . The authors intended meaning isn't the only meaning of a song, text, etc. For example, WMUWSE was written for or about Billies father but it can have a personal meaning for other people as well. And some songs are totally "open" in terms of interpretation. So I think BJ wrote Bang Bang because of the mass shootings in the U.S., but that doesn't mean that there is only one correct meaning behind the song.

But I guess since Bang Bang is about recent mass shootings in general it would be one of the events that inspired Bang Bang too.
Lilly89
Yeah. I bet he started having nightmares after writing. Probably he watched a lot of videos about shootings to be inspired for this song.
pouty bitch
I've just found this quote from Billie: "A couple of years ago, in the spring of 2014, I wrote the song ‘Bang Bang’. I wrote it coming from the viewpoint of a mass shooter after what happened in Santa Barbara. This young man was clearly deranged and had a Facebook manifesto about how ‘no girls will f**k me so I’m going to kill everybody’. The song just came out really powerfully… I thought, ‘Wow, this feels like Green Day." This would suggest that Paris shooting was not an inspiration for the song because it occurred in 2015, and the song was written in 2014. 17 minutes ago, Lilly89 said: I bet he started having nightmares after writing. I think I read somewhere that he did have nightmares after writing it. He tried to get into the mind-set of a mass shooter and it really freaked him out.
Lilly89
It won't have worked out to get in the mass shoters mind-set because Billie has something that a murder hasn't. It's called empathy. He loves animals, he is good to children and loves life. He will never be able to understand how someone can kill. Of course I get what you tried telling us. Hermione
Just now, Lilly89 said: It won't have worked out to get in the mass shoters mind-set because Billie has something that a murder hasn't. It's called empathy. He loves animals, he is good to children and loves life. He will never be able to understand how someone can kill. Of course, and I don't think he'd claim to really understand. But I think in the song he tried to make some sense of their mindset just like anyone does when you hear about something so incomprehensible. In a way he shows that it makes no sense with the song because it exposes the shooter's reasons for doing it as ridiculous.

Popular Post pouty bitch
Bang Bang is a year old. Damn, the time has flown by. A whole year, and I still love it just as much as I did when it came out, if not more. Best year of my life.

Hermione
Even my 10 year old nephew with a child's view of time couldn't believe it's been a year when I told him . With so much good stuff from GD in that time it's flown by. Still feels like a new song/album and I still listen to it on an almost daily basis.

CherryBombs&Gasoline
I remember how I was impatiently waiting for the release of the song. I was sitting on my computer, reloading Facebook every ten seconds. I was so fucking nervous . The song blew me away a year ago and it still does now. Probably their best single since the AI-era. I really think this could become a Green Day classic.

RedundantIdiot
Happy 3rd birthday to Bang Bang I can remember rushing in from work, grabbing my iPad as quick as possible, clicking onto Spotify, being pissed when an advert came on and turning the sound off, then I turned the volume up and was about 30 seconds into the song and went back to the start and was blown away by the song. Hopefully we'll have the excitement of a new song soon!
