02 - Bang Bang

Listening to A Day To Remember's new album, then I put Bang Bang on.  Wow that's a lot of compression.  Can't believe it took me so long to notice quite how much there is, but the contrast just makes Bang Bang feel a bit meh.  They just about got away with it, but it could've sounded much better with a little less, at least IMO.

Yeah, I noticed that too as I happened to have Nirvana. Then again, I vastly prefer lossless AIFF over compressed MP3.

I'd imagine it'll be better in a physical format.

found a really interesting cover. interesting, cause i like when covers are done in a different style and it adds something. i especially like the piano bit during the chorus. makes me think a swing version or something similiar would be awesome, too :D

Was also gonna say that this is the best they've produced since 2004.

Hope there's more like this on the album!

I should've known as soon as they announced that Andrew Scheps would mix it. It definitely undermines some of the power of the songs.

Does anyone think all the static sounds at the beginning of BB is a follow on from Somewhere Now, similar to ChumpLongview or...? It just seems odd to release a single that has an intro like that which takes 18 seconds to get started properly...

Haven't seen anyone mentioning it but glad we're on the same wavelength! Was just listening to BB/RevRad back to back earlier and the idea came to me, just seems like it could be a trio of songs that fit really well together!

You can see why they've gone to Scheps; that blast of volume really is something.  But I think they could have achieved a similar effect without taking away from the overall depth and power of the songs, and that someone else would have been a better choice to achieve that.  It doesn't matter so much when you listen to Bang Bang alone, or next to revrad, but I really did notice it next to a powerfully mixed/mastered song.  Doesn't kill the song for me, but frustrates me that it could've been even better.

The song was just on the radio & the announcer said this song is like red bull for  your ears - he's got that right.

Love this song so so much.

But Bang Bang has a definite ending, so it doesn't lead into RevRad.

Also just found this on Youtube

I know that obviously but the flow of the two singles fit well together. You can have songs that don't lead into each other directly but still have a good flow to an album ...

This is something that Green Day really gets. I am so sick of bands that take the lazy way out and fade the final chorus of the song till it ends and ugh, its just hard to appreciate songs like that after spending so many years with Green Day. Don't get me wrong it works really well for some songs as singles but when you want to experience an album, it mostly just feels cheap to me. One of the many things I love about Green Day is that off the top of my head I cannot think of one song by them that actually ends like this, they always seem to have a definitive ending to their songs and then they usually set up the next song perfectly.
I absolutely love the seamless transitions that they also do and I really hope to hear some more of them on the new album.

Anyway, I still can't get over Bang Bang. I still listen to it more than Revolution Radio and it is just so... badass, Easily one of the best singles they have ever done. I hope there are at least a few more songs like this on the album.

Longview fades out but it has an ending when they play it live. I've never really heard a 'fade out' song by another artist being played live. Do they have to make up an ending? Do they walk away from the mic as they're singing and gradually turn the amps down? I've always wondered about that kinda thing

Yeah, I also thought of Words I Might Have Ate, but still that's only 2 songs that I can think of and it's mainly in their really early material. I'm pretty sure the Living on a Prayer by Bon Jovi official single is fade out but they just kind of made an ending when they played it live, which is all well and good but it does nothing for me when it comes to listening to albums in general and setting up the next song. Green Day have always been amazing at that in my opinion, but I guess that's because unlike most bands, Green Day usually fully fill their albums with hard work and quality.

This is where you can discuss the second track off the album.

Lyrics

(This is definitely not the first video to surface of an execution. ...of men, they claimed responsibility for the executions. Described as severely mentally disturbed. Videos show another hostage executed by the terrorist group. Deserve to be annihilated.)

I get my kicks and I want to start a rager
I want to dance like I'm on the video
I got a fever for violent behavior
I'm sweating bullets like a modern Romeo

(Bang bang!)
(Gimme fame!)
Shoot me up to entertain
I am a semi-automatic lonely boy
(You're dead!)
(I'm well fed!)
Give me death or give me head
Daddy's little psycho
And mommy's little soldier

I testify like a lullaby of memories
Broadcasting live
And it's on my radio
I got my photobomb
I got my Vietnam
I love a lie just like anybody else

(Bang bang!)
(Gimme fame!)
Shoot me up to entertain
I am a semi-automatic lonely boy
(You're dead!)
(I'm well fed!)
Give me death or give me head
Broadcasting from my room
And playing with my toys

I want to be a celebrity martyr
The leading man in my own private drama
Hurrah!
Hurrah!
The hero of the hour
Daddy's little psycho
And mommy's little soldier

I want to be like the soldiers on the screen
It's my private holy war
Oh baby baby this is viva vendetta
For this is love or it's
World War Zero!

I want to be a celebrity martyr
The leading man in my own private drama
Hurrah!
Hurrah!
The hero of the hour
Daddy's little psycho
and mommy's little soldier

I want to be a celebrity martyr
The leading man in my own private drama
Hurrah!
Hurrah!
The hero of the hour
Daddy's little psycho
and mommy's little soldier!
