Wow- as far as first singles go, Hitchin' A Ride and Geek Stink Breath didn't make the cut? And overall singles...no Good Riddance or Brain Stew? From what I remember obviously Good Riddance and Brain Stew were huge- and for lead singles, Hitchin A Ride had more buzz than BB in the States, anyway. Not that it means anything-  BB is a better song than Hitchin'- but I am surprised it is already more popular given how huge and well received on radio Hitchin' was at the time.

As shocking and as much of an impact Good Riddance has it never reached higher than #2 on the charts

Guys, how do you understand the expression "world war zero" in Bang Bang's lyrics ?

I get the idea but I can't figure it out clearly.

I think it's a twist on the term "ground zero", which is apparently "the point on the Earth's surface closest to a detonation." So when he says it's world war zero, it means he's the one closest to starting a war at that current point in time. ....I think?

Alternatively it could be a twist on 'patient zero', ie the first known person with a particular disease or syndrome etc.

Good riddance reached #2 and I am not sure about Hitchin. but it wasn't #1.   Also, I wasn't doing first singles but all singles.

A war that starts all wars.  This is love or its all out war.  Billie is going heavy metal on this line, love it!

I'm watching the Chargers vs Vikings pre-season football game on FOX and they played "Bang Bang" heading into one of the commercial breaks.

I just heard that too, and signed on to post this. Cool little surprise!

I would love to know how B-sides and bonus tracks are selected for singles/albums. The Japan release of Dos had a live bonus track of Coming Clean which was interesting. I mean, Letterbomb (Live) has been a B-side before, but I seriously think they just throw a dart at all of their song titles and go with whatever one they hit.

I thought he meant that if there was a next world war, with the weaponry we have today, the next war would be fought with sticks.

Hitchin a Ride got up to #5.

Geek Stink Breathe #3.

Brainstew/Jaded #3.

So you're right, those are some of their biggest hits, just not #1s.

She, Warning and Wake Me Up When September Ends, 21 Guns and Oh Love are the rest of their songs that were in the top 5 somewhere.    I've got to say, Brainstew is my least favorite single by them.

Also, while I love BANG BANG, at the moment Hitchin a Ride is waaaaaay better.

Chart peak numbers don't always point to huge success. It depends on what other songs are out and how long it remains on the charts.

It went from 8 to 16 on Top Rock songs.  What the hell is the difference between Mainstream Rock Songs and Top Rock Songs???

It went from 8 to 7 on Top Alternative

I think "Mainstream" is what Active Rock stations play.

Bang Bang Commercial.

Reddit post.

Do we know what sort of videos it's on?  I'm presuming it's YouTube pre-roll from the video title.

Top Mainstream Rock Songs is  ranked by radio airplay detections on mainstream rock-formatted stations, as measured by Nielsen Music.

Top Rock Songs is  based on radio airplay audience impressions as measured by Nielsen Music, sales data as compiled by Nielsen Music and streaming activity data from online music sources tracked by Nielsen Music.

Mainstream is simply airplay and Top rock songs is airplay, sales and surveys.  So the fact that it is #1 in airplay, but #16 in top rock songs means that the sales numbers are low and the survey results are low.  That doesn't sound good.

If the song is number one on airplay list, it's going to effect positively on sales and streamings. I think that sales aren't so reliable source on this day. Not many people buy specific songs separately. If it's gaining more airplay, more people is going to discover it via streaming services.
