Green Day -Bang Bang

After 4 years, the great band Green Day released their new song Bang Bang.
I was lucky enough to be invited by Warner Music to direct the official lyric video for this powerful song. Green Day is one of my favorite bands, so I had so much fun working with them.

My role: Direction, Design and Animation.
Produced by: Devin Sarno, Laura Mende

Bang Bang is #13 on Alt Nations most requested songs list.  They do it on a Saturday so the song was only out for 2 days.  Now if the oldest didn't total my car with Sirius radio I could listen to it.

Not at all. 6.1 millions views on Facebook. It already has the same amount of views the Oh Love Lyric video gained in 4 years.

Only that Facebook views mean nothing

Why? Facebook views are nowadays used by every chart, including Billboard. They used FB as primary platform, it's obvious they're gaining more views there.

They mean quite a lot.  For a view to have been counted, the video has to have played for long enough to make an impression on the user.  Of course 6.1 million people haven't watched the entire video from start to finish.  But the video has mad an impression on these people, which is great from a publicity viewpoint.

And, just saying, on YouTube even a 1 second view count as a normal view.

Facebook records a view if it was played for more than 3 seconds. I think youtube uses 10 seconds. Also Facebook autoplays videos, so if you're looking at your timeline you see several posts in a row. You don't even need to watch the video and it will still record a view.

6 days and every morning i wake up with "i wanna be a celebrity martyr" in my head. Occasionally ,it goes to bridge part too. And there was one time my brain went "i got my photo bomb! i got my vietnam!"

and i'm not even trying .I was thinking maybe it's stuck in my head because of my love for GD but actually it's just because it's a great song.

i love 8-bit version a lot too.

Chart performance is kind of underwhelming. Oh Love debuted at #1 on like two Rock charts. Maybe it had a longer week to chart on? I don't remember.

I know.  But even if you haven't watched it, you've seen it and are aware it exists.

"YouTube's definition of a view is a legitimate (non-robot) video REQUEST. That means if the page loads, that's a view, the user doesn't actually have to watch more than 1 second."

By the way the Billboard charts "are monitored on a Friday to Thursday cycle since July 2015, previously it was on a Monday to Sunday cycle. Radio airplay song charts however follows the Monday to Sunday cycle (previously Wednesday to Tuesday). The charts are updated the following Tuesday, but dated the Saturday a further week (i.e. 11 days) later." [Wikipedia]

So we have to wait for a correct comparison between Bang Bang and the Oh Love's result.

Agreed. I was on a trip this weekend so I got some serious headphone/ plane time with this one. Overall the sound and mix job are really solid- pretty stunning, actually when compared side by side with previous albums. I'm no audiophile/ mix engineer, so can someone help me by explaining how much of this (if any) can be attributed to new technology? Has recording technology improved this significantly over the years? I would assume they used absolute top of the line equipment and recording methods during their recent major releases, but this seems like it's on a whole new level.

Also, I agree that the vocals tend to get overpowered in a few spots, but given the power of the drums and guitars I'd imagine something would need to be sacrificed. The drum mix- and quality of Tre's drumming- was shocking to me. I've always thought the world of him, but in some recent albums it seemed he had either been holding back a bit or had deliberately been more restrained. Not on this one.

I remember when the guys dropped Demolicious the contrast between their demo songs and the same songs on the Trilogy couldn't have been more distinct.  The guitars and drums were dirtier, more powerful, and in a large sense more "real", than what had actually made it onto the album (so much so that I have a custom Trilogy playlist that subs in some of the demo cuts for songs like Carpe Diem and Baby Eyes).  Looks like the band took this feedback to heart.  One big change from past albums is who *isn't* on the mix: Chris Lord-Alge, who has mixed just about every Green Day album since Dookie.  He's been criticized before for applying too much compression when mixing the tracks for the final production, particularly where Tre's percussion is concerned.  As I understand it (and I'm no audio engineer either, but here goes....) the effect of compressing a track is you boost its overall volume at the cost of leveling off the peaks and valleys.  Too little compression gives you a track that doesn't play nicely with the others, while too much gives you a disconcerting "loud and muddy" result.  Chris leans toward the "too much compression" end of the spectrum, which gives you that arena sound but doesn't let the instruments really stand out.  Different production team this time, and it seems we're getting a more "balanced" mix that plays a lot more like Demolicious than the Trilogy or 21st Century Breakdown.  Me likes.
