The more I listen to the song, I can see it fit well in the middle of American Idiot. It's like...12 years after St. Jimmy blew his brains out into the bay, he emerges from the underground more fucked up than ever before.

This sounds funny and genius at the same time

" i wanna be a celebrity martyr" part is insane.Best part of song IMO. and i don't even know what it particularly means.

i believe he's talking about how the media are making celebrities out of shooters with all of their coverage on crimes. billie joe, speaking as the shooter, will get famous for dying for what he thinks he believed in, in other words he'll become a celebrity martyr.

I've found myself singing it at random points all day.  Gonna get arrested if I keep talking about a desire for martyrdom in public :P

 me too , that part  makes me scream "i wanna be a celebrity martyr" and i spend a lot of time in a quiet room with a lot of working people. i'm trying so hard to keep my mouth shut. or not jump on my chair. I'm okay with the beginning of the song but the martyr part makes me lose it

I have to say that after the early hype I am not that excited about this first song anymore. I was super excited when Oh Love came out. Well maybe because I had to suffer with 2 shitty rock opera albums in a row. Bang Bang is ok but it's nothing special really when you listen to it a couple times. It has some cool parts like that scream in the middle, but it also has so many unnecessary things going on before it. Also that news at the beginning is starting to get annoying. The verse and chorus are all messed up. Well it doesn't really have a chorus. Maybe it's just too much going on for me. I definitely like the Kerplunk style guitars though.

This guy... I loggeed in just to say how right you are, well except the part where you complained about AI and 21cb. OH love was way and way better than this song. Damn that oh love solo is better than the whole Bang Bang song. I agree with you that trilogy is so great. Hm Stay the night, the forgotten, missing you, 99 revolutions. After all the hype I got about the new album, the song just sucks. Not because it sucks, but sucks because of my high expectation and because its the lead single.

With all respect, not everyone seems like prefer the same kind of song. But with Oh Love it seemed there was a higher percentage of people disliking it as the first single compared to Bang Bang. No matter how great a song is, there will always be someone to dislike it. Maybe because of expectation or desire. But this is what we're dealing with and I hope you can find a song on the new album that you do like.

I mean the song is ok. Dont you feel like it was forced a bit? It seems like Billie have lost all his internal inspiration after quitting drugs and alcohol? I dont think that a single off of a new album should sound like any other their previous songs. Green day is better live than in the studio. So I hope they will add some more stuff to the song on stage. Im really interested in your opinion. How would you rate this song in the scale of 10? How would you rate for the example the song 21st century out of 10?

Is it just me, or is "viva vendetta" grammatically incorrect? Shouldn't it be "viva la vendetta" instead? My credentials are a flunked spanish class, but still

I love the song, but two lines irritate me. The one I mentioned above, and then I really want it to be "Daddy's Mommy's little psycho and Mommy's Daddy's little soldier", it sounds better to me, and makes more sense that way. Guess I should direct my critique at the band themselves so they can get back in the studio and change it before October 7th ;)

For singles I'd rate Bang Bang a 8 21st a 9 and oh love as a 3 oh love is an ok song but was a bad choice for a lead single

Well whats 10 for you? For me 10 is bohemian rhapsody and Stay the night live at Montreux( dat imrpovised solo though). Comparing to them Id give Bang bang a 5 or a 6.

I'd give Bohemian Rhapsody a 20 lol

rating as just songs and not as singles I'd say Bang Bang stays at an 8 Oh Love would be a 5 and 21st would be a 10

It's a sad truth, but often drugs and alcohol are main factors in good songwriting of that transcendingly inspired kind. But no one can ride that train their whole life, and so, many great musicians lose a bit of their edge when they go clean, trading it in for peace of mind and a functional happy life

Wouldn't say it's that bad with Billie Joe, but you can definitely feel a difference

Billie has never been known for his grammatical prowess

Also, the Daddy's little psycho and Mommy's little soldier might actually be a reference to Adam Lanza, the Sandy Hook shooter.  I've already said this but his father left because he could not deal with him or his mother and his mother taught him to shoot.

Ahh alright, didn't know that. I do know however that these kind of people often suffer from having an absent father. Hence why I figured it would be better if he was mommy's little psycho because he would have a close relationship with his mother, possibly living with her well past wat's the norm. And then daddy's little soldier, because he would have a need to impress his absent father by doing something drastic. That was my thought process anyway, beside it just sounding better phonetically

I take that to mean that he is willing to die to become famous.

49 minutes ago, Jane Lannister said:

That's pretty straightforward. The shooter wants to be famous for what he does - a celebrity. He doesn't mind getting killed as long as he gets the celebrity status. He dies for his cause - a martyr.

Beat me to it

I took it instead to mean they want to become famous by dying, a literal celebrity martyr, to be known as one of those shooters who ended their killing with themselves.

I can get that.  I don't know that I'm right, but that is what struck me when I heard the line.

Thank you good sir. Hadn't heard that version, and that solo was definitely something else!

Edit: Especially the two seconds from 4:00 to 4:02 are so good I wish it was on the studio recording

Sorry, but I don't agree with anything you said. To be honest, if you liked AI or 21st Century breakdown that little, that you resort to calling them: shitty rock operas, then I don't know how ''the new'' Green Day will ever be able to please you. I think I could understand how you're not that excited anymore after the initial hype, all early excitement dies down at some point, but you loose me when you go on to criticizing AI and 21CB, as well as praising ''Oh Love''. I my opinion, that song has even less in common with the fast, furious, raw and emotion-driven songs of the 90s.

Yup it should have been as well as the solo right at the end. And Billies vocals, and the atmosphere. Just perfect to me

"Viva Vendetta" is correct. There are phrases such as "Viva Peace" or "Viva Love".

Feels to me like the exact opposite of forced tbh. I know you didn't ask for my opinion specifically but I'd give Bang Bang at least an 8. I liked Oh Love but I wasn't THIS excited when it came out. It's such a different song in terms of subject and tempo though so it's hard to compare. As for 21CB the song...7.5. :P

When you google viva vendetta, all the results are V for Vendetta. Kinda interesting.

Also 'viva' translates to 'long live' so I guess the 'la' ('the') isn't necessary in this case? Long live (the idea of) vendetta?

It's also crazy to hear iHeartRadio promos for the song on commercial radio stations. It's so fucking refreshing to hear Green Day get the promotion on the radio again.

iHeart forgives Billie Joe and lets them on again.    Billie walks out, says "I'm and clean and sober right now.  and F(woo) this place anyway.    Smashes his guitar and walks out.   Green Day put on the show of a lifetime down the street in some dive bar.

But since Green Day have demoted Jason White now, Jason White comes out and gives iHeart a good old fashion rock show.

BANG BANG
