02 - Bang Bang

Lol it was cute, but kind of lame. It's like they didn't know what to do with a FB livestream, but someone suggested they should do one.

I heard it on my local station the one time I drove my car today.   I'm surprised they didn't bleep "head".   When they bleep words like "shoplift" and "gun" in every other song I hear.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but anyone else think Billie's attacking the use of the Guy Fawkes mask in protests with the "viva vendetta" line? 'Cause it sounds very, very similar to "V for Vendetta".

I have to say, it's a little surprising that the video isn't up on YouTube yet. Perhaps they're waiting until later in the day to publish it, in order to have an excuse to post it again on their Facebook page. Or they might want to keep the traffic focused on one place.

Regardless, it would be unwise to wait much longer, in my humble opinion.

Holy shitballs. This is the first time since American Idiot's release that I have felt this much love and excitement for a track of theirs. As soon as it started I had the biggest smile on my face! I absolutely love the sound quality, and the fact that it is self-produced is super cool. The fast and hard pace of the track is exactly what I was hoping for. As for the lyrics, no complaints - they're substantive and creative. Admittedly, I was pretty nervous for this track but i'm so happy it didn't disappoint! Bring on Rev Rad!

Y'know, it's amazing just how many different pieces of old songs of theirs you can hear  in Bang Bang. So far I've recognized small bits of songs from the trilogy, 21st century breakdown, insomniac, and nimrod. And yet it's it's own thing completely!

It really is kind of conglomerate evolution of everything they've ever done, and as ridiculous as it sounds I kinda want to hear what's next already just to see where they're gonna go from here.

Yes please!! Pm me if you want! :) if you've figured it out I'd like a bit if an explanation on the changes please too

The complexity lies mostly in how the vocal melody interacts with the underlaying chords, which are actually quite easy to play, as it's just power chords as per usual with GD

I don't have the patience for laying out a tabs chart right now, so I hope you can figure out my simplified notations, and fill in the blanks such as timing and rhythm.

In brackets are the string and fret indicating the root note of the power chord -> D5(a5) meaning the A-string on the 5th fret - this chord = (x-5-7-7-x-x)

Chords:

Spoiler

Intro/post chorus riff

A5(e5) - F5(a8) - D5(a5) - D5

A5 - F5 - C5(a3) - E5(a7)

Verse (">" means it comes in very quickly right before the first beat)

G5e3 > A5 - D5 > A5

G5 > A5 - D5 > A5

G5 > A5 "I get my kicks" - D5 > A5 "...and I wanna start a rager"

A5 > G5 - D5 - A5

Chorus riff (bang bang!)

A5 - F5 - D5 - D5

A5 - C5 - F5 - D5

Post-chorus (I wanna be a celebrity martyr)

A5 - A5 - F#5(e2) - D5

A5 - A5 - F#5 - D5

A5 - A5 - F#5 - D5

A5 - C5 - F5 - D5

Bridge (be like the soldier on the screen)

Most of this part is just an E5(e0) ringing througout with the lead guitar playing something that would take a bit longer to write down.

E5(e0) - E5 - E5 - F5(e1) - Bb5(a1)

Got you!! Thank you so much! :) all I needed was the chord progression. I'm a bit of a nerd when it comes to complicated harmonic constructions haha :)

I like how people were worried about how the song would sound because of Xmas Time of the Year and it sounds absolutely nothing like that

My sister loved it too. AND SO DID MY DAD (who kept saying they are boring now, the old stuff was better etc) !

I wasn't too hyped about the new song, I expected it to be a nice song and nothing more. But you know what? It's pretty awesome! I'm looking foward to hear the whole album.

But for the love of god Mike,

PLAY

MORE

GODDAMN

BASSLINES!

You and us deserve more than just root notes!

It seems like there will be more bass lines since he took lessons and got even better

So, I like the sound of the track. Very unpolished, one of their more harsh sounding tracks in recent memory. BJA sounds good and Tre has some nice fills on here.

Not the biggest fan of another political record, though. We've been through this already, but from the Rolling Stone interview, it seems like we'll get some personal tracks on here too. Some of these lyrics are pretty damn corny as well.

Overall, not a bad first single. Better than Know Your Enemy or Oh Love, but I'm not exactly in love with it. Regardless, I'm excited for the album.

It's a great Green Day song if you prefer their up-tempo stuff like St. Jimmy and Platypus. I prefer their mid-tempo stuff like Stay the Night and Oh Love. I guess a single like this was called for after the trilogy, but I'm certain it won't be the best song on the album.

That Rolling Stone article about the song and album is a great read! I'm glad he said if he could do the Trilogy over again, they would.
