02 - Bang Bang

As is tradition with new Green Day music, I've been playing around with my guitar to try and to figure out the chords. Took a bit longer than usual

For the people less familiar with music in theoretical terms, I'll just say that this is probably one of the most complex songs they've ever done in terms of the chord progressions (which is not to get confused with a complex sound or high technical difficulty). The deeper explanation is that it changes key/scale between almost all the different parts, and even in the middle of some of them. It makes some very queer choices, most notably shifting between an A-major scale in the verse and an A-minor scale in the chorus. And don't even get me started on what's going on in the bridge!

Either Billie Joe is stepping up his musicianship, or he just struck gold while blindfolded. But this definitely is some next level shit, and catchy as hell

Edit: Let me know if somebody want's the chords written out

To me it sounds like the best combination of Dos and American Idiot. And that's perfect for me.

I don't hear "early" Green Day.  I hear American Idiot sound with a dash of Tubbies.   Tre Cool is doing some really cool stuff in this one for sure.   Can't really hear the bass in the mix but sometimes you need to.

Yeah I don't hear early Green Day at all. Makes me think of 21st CB with a bit of the trilogy's more simple/fun/rock n roll sound (which I suppose is very similar to AI plus Tubbies ). Lyrically as well there's serious/political themes (AI/21st CB) but also fun one liners (trilogy). I dunno if people just equate any kind of catchy pop punk sound with early Green Day? But to me it sounds much more like the modern version of it.

After a bit more thought, I agree with you and others on this point. I was definitely misattributing the faster pace of the song to the Trilogy when in reality, it matches more with older Green Day in general, which is only a good thing!

Yeah the vocal alone you could put right on the trilogy and not miss a beat, but the instruments, especially the guitars, are heavy AF and that's what I've always liked about Green Day. When they combine heavy fast guitar/drums with poppy-melodic hooks and bass-lines, it just clicks for me. This one may be a tick faster than that even, it's more in the St. Jimmy territory than the Stuart and the Ave territory which makes it more impressive that the harmonies and vocal melodies seem to be pretty catchy.

I'm interested to see how/if it charts. We're at a soft spot in summer for Top 40 music, could be a chance for Green Day to sneak in to the bottom half of the Hot 100 which nothing on the trilogy came close to doing. I don't see this as much of a radio song, so that will make it more difficult if it doesn't hit pop stations.
