01 - Somewhere Now

I feel like this should be the road Green Day carry on down. It's just so good, but it's appropriate and true to where they are now they're getting on in life. I think Billie writes much better when he just focuses on writing good songs like this rather than consciously trying to write like he did in his 20s.

Is there a particular Who song this sounds like? Does totally have a Who vibe now I've seen it mentioned, but just wondering if there's a specific song by them (or anyone else) that's similar since the "somewhere now" part sounds so familiar to me.

It sounds like some parts of the "Tommy" album. More specifically The Acid Queen, and maybe a bits of It's a Boy.

Two songs I hear are Behind Blue Eyes and A Quick One.

It also reminds me of On The Ave by Pinhead Gunpowder :D

Exactly what I first thought. It's a Boy especially. Always wanted them to write a song more like that

I adore this song, it's an absolute journey. I like the underproduced feel at the start; they could have easily found a better sounding acoustic guitar, but it really works. Oddly it seems like a great follow up to the Trilogy in that Billie sounds kind of reflective and tired during the intro before the chorus kicks in. There are aspects of the chorus I don't really like, but overall it's got the classic epic feel and I think this track more than any other on the album will become a major nostalgia trip in years to come.

The bridge reminds me of Baba O'Riley with the rhythm of the chord changes, but then again they already did that with 21st Century Breakdown.

The first quiet part sounds like it could have been on Automatic For The People. Also getting some Before THe Lobotomy vibes from this one.

The beginning has almost a Norwegian Wood feel to it. It seems very Rubber Soul-like in general to me, just a bit harder. I love it!

Okay so at first my thoughts were, " wow this is slow for a starter song" then it kicks in. Now that I have seen you guys mention The Who, I can really see that part. Great choice for a first song.

This sounds like a song straight off of Who's Next! Love it!

I didn't know that song but just listened and it does! Maybe it's also just a general Who-like sound.

The guitar and pace of the song sounds very Who-esque not necessarily a specific song...a combination of songs :D

its a small price we pay when we all die in threes - that is totally Bargain

is that Pete doing the the 'hoo' in the background behind "somewhere now"

at first I was like okay we starting off slow but then BAM. I love this so much!!

Ok maybe that die in threes part isn't Bargain....it's definitely another Who song that I can't put my finger on right now..too many songs to go through  it's definitely something... if anyone found it!

I'm writing this as the album plays and I think it's a bit telling I forgot this song even happened, I thought "I'm only two tracks in" after RevRad because as soon as this was over it left my head. It's by no means bad, just literally forgettable.

Dont worry, Forever Now will refresh you on it.

Pete Townsend did not co-write this song.  I had said in a post of mine that it sounds like Pete Townsend could have co-written it, but he did not.

Awesome song great anthem type song.  Billie said it was a Who type anthem and he wasn't kidding.  It easily could fit right on Quadrophenia

There's no songwriting credits anywhere in the thing?  How do we know who did or didn't write anything?   Until I see some credits I'm assuming Jason White wrote everything on this album!

Listen to the 3:48 point of the song where he says "congratulations I found myself".  There is another voice speaking during that part and it's hard to understand but clearly there.

Also, they missed another "S" in the lyric book.   It's clearly pillows and not pillow.   Oh my god.  Unacceptables.

If there's one thing that Green Day usually gets right, it's their album opener.

This song is amazing. I was hooked as soon as I heard the acoustic intro.

It just has a nice guitar picking pattern that makes me think of nice classic rock. It grabs me in so much.

Such a good song! Was not expecting something like this at all, but I love it! Definitely grabbed my attention right away.

I can't get over how beautiful the intro of this song is! Well the whole thing but especially that part, such a wonderful start to the album.

Does the repeated "somewhere now" part near the end sound like some other song? I swear it sounds familiar. Either way I really love that part too.

Well, I know it's not The Who, but the intro also reminds me strongly of "Sweet Child O' Mine", "Sweet Home Alabama", and, well, "Disappearing Boy"  And the "Somewhere Now" bit really does sound like something else, but I can't place what I am thinking of....I know it's not a Who song though. It's something more modern. Like 90s...or maybe even early 00s. This is going to drive me batshit lol.

Yeah I don't think I'm going to work out what it is any time soon . Pretty much purely sounds like a Green Day song to me by now anyway so doesn't bother me so much.

Was is really necessary to write "I put the riot in PatRiot" like that in the lyrics booklet? I got it thanks, you didn't need to spell it out :P

Just makes it sound like "I put the riot in Patt Riot" in my head when I read it . Still love the line though, fun bit of word play.
