@Spike

A cause - a principle, aim, or movement to which one is committed and which one is prepared to defend or advocate.

But all he was left to believe in was something that wasn't true - Santa Claus.....

I don't think the lyrics for Too Dumb to Die are that bad...but yeah, the "cello" part is weird. I think of it as being purposely silly in order to tie into the song title. :P

So I have kind of a technical question, for people like me who are into audio and music production, but other people might have noticed this too.

Is there an unusually high amount of audio clipping/peaking on this album? I thought the very beginning of Bouncing Off the Wall and towards the end of Forever Now were some of the biggest culprits. It sounds like whenever Tre hits both toms and the kick at the same time, creating a lot of low end, there's tons of crackling going on, and it sounds a whole lot like the signal is just peaking like crazy.

I know with modern production and the whole loudness wars going on and everything, this is pretty common, but this is definitely the most I've heard it on any Green Day recordings. It could just be my own ears, but that's why I wanted to ask on here to see if anyone else is hearing what I'm hearing. I compared across different devices, headphones, streaming...it's pretty gnarly. Maybe it has something to do with the new staff they used on this record? Producing it mostly on their own, different mix and mastering engineers than before, all of that could have contributed.

Anyway. I think the album sounds really great other than this. I love the new mix and new elements that haven't been on past records. Bummer that I'm hearing all this noise though.

YES! I totally agree with you! I was thinking the same thing. & you definitely aren't the only one to mention the issue. Here's a thread about the mastering:

Yeah, it's massively clipped. Even the HDTracks version lacks dynamics; there's no clipping on that one but the compression is a total brickwall job. It's a shame because it makes the guitars sound so sloppy. Andrew Scheps mixed it, and I'm wondering if the destruction of Death Magnetic was also his doing since he worked on that too.

No its Billie. Mike didnt do vocals on thus album

Yes he did, he's credited in the liner notes. It's clearly not Billie's voice.

Not really in the mood for a back and forth and I'm sure everyone else hates it when posts are just "no it's this/no it's that". But that's definitely Mike saying "the suffering" in Say Goodbye.

The Santa Claus line is pretty baffling. I'd quite like to know what @Hermione makes of it :P

The rest of it works, though? The reference to Somewhere Over The Rainbow ties in the cello metaphor nicely. I'm not saying it's one of Billie's better lyrics but beyond the aforementioned it's not totally nonsensical.

 I do think the lyrics are meant to have a kind of whimsical thing going on (eg I feel like a cello) so they probably don't all need to be analysed completely literally. But I think with "Looking for a cause well all I got was Santa Claus" he might be saying he was looking for something meaningful/real but could only find things that turned out not to be or were more superficial. Like he was searching for something but couldn't find it (yet).

As a general comment not all lyrics have to mean something literal. Just because every word/phrase isn't immediately understandable or can't be explained as meaning something completely literal it doesn't mean they're garbage and have no meaning. I don't know what some Green Day fans must make of a lot of other bands lyrics, there's way more abstract lyrics out there.

Speaking of lyrics, has anyone come up with a meaning for the 2nd verse of Somewhere Now? it makes no sense to me :P

I got a scene in the middle of the road, i'm gonna take my time

I shop online so I can vote at the speed of life

I'm like a drone way up in the sky, i'm a shooting star

There's a soldier that's freaking out, PS this is war

I'm comfortable where I'm at - I had low times & high times but I'm happy feeling normal.

I don't want to waste my time I want to live life.

maybe the drone reference is him looking at life from a distance but he is going to give it his best shot & reach for the sky.

he is declaring war on his old self & he isn't going back there.

or it just sounds good😋

Impressive. I couldn't make much sense of it so I'm gonna trust you with this one.

Btw, why did he find his soul under sofa pillows? (Darn, I love how he sings that line.)

Dark days & he picked himself up & faced things head on or like @Scattered Wreck said is common to find things under the sofa pillows.

I also love it - he says it like sofa pillars - which makes it more powerful to me - but that's what I hear - usually I can't understand what the f###ing American says😄

I just took my phone from under a sofa pillow to post on here. She's a wise lady.

This line will take me some more thinking I guess. Also, I hear "pillars" as well.

I really love that line. The way I look at it is that he had a really hard time trying to find his "soul" (maybe some purpose in life, meaning...) and then he finally found it "under the sofa pillows" - it was right there in front of him the whole time, he just couldn't see it before. "Hallelujah I found myself, somewhere now" - he's finally feeling better about himself and his place in the world.
