The line "Violence on the rise, like a bullet in the sky" in Say Goodbye amuses me. It's like a Catchphrase clue/answer. I like how there's clever and/or subtly funny lines and wordplay throughout the album in amongst serious lyrics and serious themes, adds wit to it.

I don't understand what you mean by this.

That I like the word play and witty lines on the album. If you mean the Catchphrase part I mean that if it was on the gameshow Catchphrase there would be a picture of a bullet in the sky and the answer would be violence on the rise

That Youngblood line, "fuck you I'm from Oakland", I think I understand now. I think it's specifically answering Billie's "are you restless?" and it's a sort of defensive reply to emphasise that she's not restless (as if he's suggesting she wants to go home), she feels settled in this new place, and saying she's from here is an exaggeration of sorts to get him to shut up :P

It is Catchphrase-esque :D but I think it's also a way to illustrate that violence is on the rise fast. A bullet in the sky = a bullet being shot upwards. Which is of course very fast!

Yeah I picked up on the "restless" part today also.

Well, in anticipation of getting the actual album I've cut myself off from listening to it this week. It's a rather painful experience so far but I know it'll be worth it when I feel extra pumped to get my hands on it Friday!

Thanks for explaining that line in Youngblood. I thought it was weird and didn't make much sense but now I get it now.

And we won't even mention the fact that the Armstrongs have in fact been living in Piedmont, not Oakland for nearly a decade

Why would we mention that anyway? The song's clearly set in the past, possibly after she's just moved. Like Westbound Sign part 2. :P

I really don't want to get caught up in a discussion about this song or the lyrics because they are intensely dumb but I really don't see how they are set in the past? As I said before I think the song sounds disjointed and mashed together like it's two different songs but that's my opinion. For example one of my issues with the song is that Billie is asking

Are you broken
Like I'm broken
Are you restless
She said "Fuck you I'm from Oakland"

She's responding to his questions about being broken and restless by saying hell no I'm not I'm from Oakland as though being from Oakland has given her certain character traits or strengths that he lacks hence he's broken and restless. To me that doesn't make sense if we say it's back in the mid 90's since Billie had been living in Oakland since he was seventeen but Adrienne had just moved there so couldn't claim "fuck you I'm from Oakland" (I'm stronger or more settled etc than you) as it would make absolutely no sense and if we take it as being from now neither of them live in Oakland they live in Piedmont but even still he's obviously lived there longer than her so how could she logically be like "fuck you I'M from Oakland". It's just dumb. I mean the lyrics are just terrible to be honest so probably not worth even considering but they really sound patched together to me. It would be more understandable to me if half the lyrics turned up on an old American Idiot b-side. Like how some of the lyrics to Angel Blue (about his tears putting out his cigarette etc) turned up in State of Shock  They really sound like leftovers from She's a Rebel mixed with new lines which don't all necessarily make sense together.

Is she dreaming
what I'm thinking
Is she the mother of all bombs
gonna detonate
Is she trouble
like I'm trouble.

If you replace the "is" with "are you" you can imagine that the lines could easily be leftovers or b-sides etc.

It's honestly not my favourite song either but it makes sense to me if I picture it as him asking her if she's restless separately from the 'are you broken like I'm broken?' line. He's not saying he's restless as well. It's possibly him just asking out of frustration or something and her response is instinctive. I agree that 'I'm from Oakland' is still a bit of an odd line because you can't really change where you're from  but if I read it as an exaggerated response it kinda makes sense to me?

I know you hate the record though so don't feel you have to respond! :P

I've been thinking about this in the last few days, it'd be amazing to get it on the day... but I'm not getting my hopes up, it'll probably come way later =/.

I've never pre-ordered from the store before though, so I don't know.

For me the 'Fuck You' line in Youngblood is Adrienne's response to all the sentimental love expressions of Billie, as it is the 'last line' of the song.
You know, Verse 1 is Billie's View of her, the Bridge is kinda like his nearer thoughts in an inner monologue and then the second Verse is him actually confessing his feelings about her but whilst doing that he strays into becoming emotional & insecure, which expresses his inner conflict between fulfilling the punk stereotype ('Do you want to watch the world fall in pieces?') & him being the insecure little boy that thinks too much ('Are you stranded, like I'm stranded?' (A reference to Armatage Shanks I think, which fits the idea of this Verse displaying his conflicts & problems)). These thoughts get silenced by 80's straight forward kinda violent & vulgar response, which stands in contrast with the sensitives expressions of Billie.
