But if we didnt discuss the lyrics the thread would just be - I like it, I love it, I hate it.

I don't think he means not discussing at all, just everyone's so picky about it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much!

Man, idk if anyone thinks Ordinary World doesn't fit well at all on the album, but I much prefer Youngblood over Ordinary World

It doesn't. Forever Now is where the album ends for me. Such a huge end to the album and tying it in with the beginning track makes the album feel complete. Ordinary World is a filler track stuck on the end of the album for the sake of a track.

Yes but at least we are not in an unpopular opinions thread.

But Ordinary World is lovely.

You can be "from" more than one place. Yes she's originally from Minnesota, but she's lived in Oakland for a while so she can also say that she's from Oakland.

But it still doesn't make any sense since the way he puts it

Are you broken
Like I'm broken

Are you restless

She said "Fuck you I'm from Oakland"

lts he's broken and restless and wants to know if "she" is but she's like fuck you I'm not a weak person or broken, restless person I'm from Oakland so I'm different, I'm stronger than that. That makes no sense since he's grown up in the bay area and lived in Oakland longer than Adrienne. Someone saying "fuck you I'm from Oakland"  implies he isn't even really from there (or he wouldn't be so broken or restless etc).

Maybe it's like, "fuck you I'm from Oakland (now too)", like I'm now at home at and part of Oakland too so don't be silly I'm as tough as anyone from there.

Maybe if it was tied into the album differently I'd feel different about it but it seems to be stuck there for no reason. It's just one of those tracks where I don't get the hype. Soz.

But he's calling himself broken and restless and asking if she is too and her response is haha fuck no not me I'm tougher that I'm from Oakland which makes no sense if we're talking about someone who actually moved to Oakland in her mid/late twenties while Billie lived his entire life in the Bay area and moved from Rodeo to Oakland at seventeen. The "FUCK YOU I'M from Oakland" is essentially claiming ownership of a particular set of strengths or personality traits which "she" feels Billie lacks exactly because he isn't from Oakland.

Pretty sure Youngblood is not suppose to be taken all that seriously.

Troubled Times sounds great, but musically it seems very similar to While My Guitar Gently Weeps, especially the intro.

People seem to have said that about every song at this stage

Believe me I don't take anything on this album seriously except maybe Bang Bang  I'm just saying that it really doesn't make any sense that the entire song is about Adrienne. It just doesn't make any lyrical sense. It's like two separate songs pieced together and the second part is about whatsername. Hell it is even reminiscent of the lyrics of She's a Rebel.

Ah I see what you mean. Maybe the lyric is more off the cuff than how we're treating it so it doesn't have to make perfect technical sense (I expect so ). But it could be she's just playfully defending herself from that weak description and not necessarily even thinking about whether it applies to Billie. The next part of the fictional conversation could even have been Billie realising hey I'm from Oakland and tougher than that too.

Or he just sandwiched two songs together that he'd been working on but they weren't both about the one person. We know he mashes, blends, splices and chops songs together so to me this seems like the most logical conclusion rather than imagining fictional conversations and Billie forgetting he lives in Oakland

I gotta say this album has some great bass moments from Mike! I mean, not Insomniac or Dookie great, but ignoring Dirty Rotten Bastards, his most interesting bass work since the 90s is on here.

I haven't listened to Rev Rad for a few days now; been too busy with work and life. That's ok though because I don't want to overplay it and be tired of it before my cd comes. Then I can blast it in my car and on my boombox!

Yeah I agree with your criticism. But this line still makes more sense to me than some of the others on this album

Are we assuming that he's singing the lyrics in first person as himself? Cause Green Day previously had many lyrics that are in first person yet inapplicable to Billie Joe. Bang Bang is a most recent example.

I didn't and still don't care about any of it making sense.   What's really bugging my about that same lyric is this:   Did Billie Joe and his wife have a conversation like this, or are all the little details creative licence? It's fine either way.   I doubt they had the whole "are you broken like I'm broken" dialogue exactly but the "f**k you I'm from Oakland" could be a nice little inside joke between husband and wife in reality.  That would be cool.

I see a lot of people saying that Too Dumb to Die is one of the weakest tracks on the album. Surely I can't be the only one who loves the guitar work in it? and oh my god those backing vocals and the way they meet up together in the verse and chorus! :D:D:D

The weakest thing about the song in my opinion is some of the lyrics, but musically it's fucking great.

Do you really think good, relatable, meaningful writing is achieved by just reading a dictionary/thesaurus and picking out big words?

Of course not, but I hate cliches. And Billie Joe in this record is full of them. In the other hand, there is not that necesary use complicated words to make a good song. But extreme repetition is that kills me, at least in lyrics matter.

Also, as a non-native speaker, I like to learn new worlds!

I was also confused by the "fuck you I'm from Oakland" line because I guess it must be him saying it (since he specifies she's from Minnesota earlier in the song) but it really sounds like it's her response to the "are you..." lines. The song doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me :P

Maybe now she identifies as being from Oakland? Like his home is her's now?
