stories and songs
I actually lump Too Dumb to Die in with Youngblood and Bouncing Off the Wall in terms of sound, because they're more upbeat. I don't think it sounds anything like Troubled Times.

This album pulls it off perfectly, every song sounds very diverse where as a lot of the songs on the trilogy sounded exactly the same, there was even a point where I was playing a few songs to a family member and they couldn't tell that the song had changed, and this happened a few times. Great examples of this are Say Goodbye and Troubled Times. The guitars sound very different in those two songs to anything else before and unlike the trilogy, that sound doesn't overstay it's welcome and as a result those songs feel special. Also, in terms of innovation, they went backwards from writing epic rock operas in AI and 21CB to make simple songs that were structurally similar to Dookie and pre-dookie albums, and tried to make them sound very poppy by taking out almost all the distortion (probably in an attempt to make it more popular for casual listeners) and as a result, they sounded a lot worse (in my opinion). There is nothing innovative about this at all.

stories and songs
The term Revolution Radio is referenced in two songs, though. The second time it's referenced, it kinda ties the whole album together.

The distorted guitars on RevRad sound exactly like on AI and 21CB and I'm sick of that tone. Green Day always changed their guitar sound so I have no idea why they went back to that sound. The problem with RevRad is also that the songs are horribly mastered and that's why the guitars are all over the place and the songs are way too loud. Maddie86
only 8 more days! I'm so excited to hear this on vinyl when it comes out. I hope they actually ship these out a few days early, it'd be nice to have the actual vinyl on the day of release, but it really won't surprise me if I don't see the record until a week or two after the release date :-\

.Holly
Not usually a fan of slow Green Day songs, I wasn't keen on outlaws when I first heard it, but it's grown on me a lot. IrelandCalling
Very nice post Doggins, for those of us who love music, we all have a particular band with whom we share that kind of history. For me it's the Rolling Stones, been with them for 23 years now and they will always remain my favourites. Green Day I've been a fan of off and on for 20+ years also; Dookie was for me and my college friends THE album of 1994. It was everywhere, as were GD. I lost touch with them for a decade, before I was amazed at how damn good the single 'American Idiot' was. On hearing the album itself, AI, and with the knowledge that the very same album was appealing to friends of mine of very different generations and musical tastes, it was obvious GD had a genuine crossover hit and an album that would resonate, as it has. 21st Century Breakdown didn't capture my attention as much though I did like it. The Trilogy was when I returned, the chutzpah of releasing 37 songs in a year was astounding, and amazingly, they weren't the only one of my favourite acts to do so - the Manic Street Preachers released exactly the same amount, 37 songs, in 2013/2014 (two studio album and 12 bonus tracks/B Sides across the single releases). Incredible coincidence, two favourites, in the same year almost, and the figure 37. The Manics fared much better than the trilogy I had to admit, the two albums they released - especially Futurology - were absolutely terrific, and the B-Side album most of us compiled were of the same very high standard. Lyrically touching and evocative, musically inventive and both regarded as two of their finest albums (and like GD, they are the 11th and 12th albums of their career). However, the trilogy for me from GD wasn't as dodgy as many reviews I'd read. I still like it, and have compiled my own Best-Of playlist. The guitars were not loud enough but there are some very good songs there. I love 'Cautro' also, a fine documentary. RevRad - had very high hopes based on the political rhetoric beforehand and the general social/political feel of both advance singles. I'm only two listens in but I am enjoying it. As Doggins mentioned, the title 'Revolution Radio' perhaps doesn't fit as well as another may, as it's a lot more introspective than politically aware as AI was. However, as a title I do like it and I even feel the artwork is cool in itself. The songs I would place on an even par with the very best of the trilogy, and there are some corkers there for sure! 'Forever Now', 'Somewhere Now', the excellent 'Troubled Times', 'Bouncing off the Walls', 'Bang Bang' are all standout tracks and will be on repeated play for quite some time methinks. 'Outlaws' is a wonderful melody, as is 'YoungBlood' (I know this one seems to be loved and hated in equal measure thus far). 'Too Dumb to Die' is really the only track I find a tad throwaway, but overall, so far, I have high hopes this will be one of my favourite albums of 2016 alongside Megadeth's incredible 'Dystopia' released last February. I know. It's a really surreal time for me and I can tell that it's the same for a lot of other people here. The band themselves have even said that they are truly proud of this record and worked really hard on it and it's so obvious that it shows, and then you get people who constantly try to degrade it and talk about how surperior something else was that wasnt even something the band were actually satisfied with. He says stuff like these songs are just recycled old songs but im pretty sure the ratio of recycled old songs was much higher in the Trilogy. Like others have said, its fine to state your opinion and have valid points but repeating the same thing over and over again when everyone here seems really happy just isn't necessary. GenXIdiot
I'm really really late to this party but I finally listened to the whole album front to back a couple times and WOW! This album is absolutely beautiful! I love so many things about it, I think it's one of their best ever. The lyrics, Billie Joe's singing, the band's musicianship, the mix, the melodies, the colors, the textures...just WOW. I love the Somewhere Now-Forever Now arc. The whole thing is simply beautiful throughout.
