I'm with you there. People are actually complaining that the guitars are loud and in your face. That's how it should be!

To me Insomniac is the album the just didn't give a fucking shit about his vocals. They were god awful. He didn't enunciate a freakin' word. He didn't really start to take his vocals really seriously until AI. Then he did broadway and took vocal lessons and we have 21CB, his best vocals by far. I fully understand someone saying Insomniac is their favorite album, even if it isn't mine. I get that. But to say his vocals were good, just no. Sorry babe, I will fight you to the death on that. Well, we will disagree on this one forever I guess, but my first show was during the Insomniac tour and he slayed an arena with those vocals that evening. Crushed it. The enunciation thing was unique to the type of music. I would call those vocals more "spitfire punk" style than anything. Just curious, do you think Tim Armstrong's vocals suck because he slurs and stutters through his delivery? Because this is a styling choice- much like Billie's delivery on Insomniac and during bits of Dookie and even Nimrod. Timmy Timebomb is an amazing vocalist and oftentimes delivers the same way BJA did during Insomniac. Maybe our difference in opinion is rooted in style and delivery? At any rate, the Insomniac vocals and much of the Pinhead vocals impress me as much as more recent, better refined vocals such as those in Brutal Love. And make no mistake, I love it all. I just think Billie's Insomniac vocals were perfect for the place and time.
The Grateful Green
Wow. I was not expecting that. I think this is easily one of Green Day's best albums. Wildly diverse, straight to the point, rockin', you name it and this record has it. And the boys have never sounded better with their instrument playing. Mike's bass is bass-tastic, Tre's drumming is out of this world, and Billie's guitar tones have expanded greatly throughout. Favorite song right now has to be Say Goodbye. I can see that being really fun live. Holy fuck! Green Day is back!!

unextraordinarygirl
So I listened to it all the way through again and I'm back with a few thoughts. The beginning of Still Breathing sounds like or reminds me of 8th Avenue serenade. Does anyone else hear that? Say Goodbye and Outlaws make me feel really sad. Is Say Goodbye the one Billie wrote after the BLM march? I can't remember. Anyway it makes me feel sad especially the line 'say goodbye to your loved ones.' It makes me wonder what that would be like to loose a parent or child since I haven't. Outlaws makes me feel sadly nostolgic. Like saying goodbye to the past and you can't go back kind of thing. It's a good thing Bouncing Off the Wall follows those 2 songs because I need something upbeat after those other ones. Maybe I'm reading too much into it but these songs just all of a sudden hit me in the feels.

Sometimes (not always) I find that cursing can be a crutch and/or substitute for better lyrics and vocabulary. It's powerful if slipped into a song because no other word will convey a certain emotion, for example. It's altogether lazy if they're just dropped in there to fill space or try to convey anger when other words/ lyrics would work even better. Oftentimes I find that cursing is a "limiting" crutch that people fall back on due to laziness. Which is a fucking shame!

I was expecting it to be way more political. And what would you guys say is the best song off this record? I think it's right on par with what I thought it'd be politically. It's more socially conscious than political, if that makes sense? But we have Bang Bang, Revolution Radio, Say Goodbye, Troubled Times...they're all pretty hard-hitting sociopolitical tunes. I expected a mix of political and personal, and that's exactly what I got. While I was getting AWESOME vibes from everything the guys said the album would be like, I'll be honest—I was expecting another Uno. I just thought their whole "Let's be Green Day!" idea meant that they'd do pretty basic pop-punk. And I would've been ok with that—Uno is a really fun album. That said, I WAS SO WRONG AND I'M SO GLAD. I also noticed that there's an extreme lack of cursing on RevRad. I kind of love it. It's fine in many instances, but was so overdone in much of the trilogy that I was a little turned off. Too much cursing would've felt wrong on RevRad, so I'm glad Billie opted to try something else. This is definitely what I want and expect his writing to be at this point in his life. The trilogy was widely not what I was looking for from someone his age, with a few exceptions.
