Okay I'm overreacting. I think maybe my expectations are just too high.

This is a bit of a random GD thought, but some of the discussion in this thread made me think of this.

I'm just really glad that GD is still young (in the rock world) and therefore able to keep putting out albums and to continue touring for awhile. I'm happy to hear any new music from them, at this point. With the exception of Green Day, most of my favorite bands are nearing the end, which makes me very sad. The singers are struggling to hit notes that were once easy game for them, and the guitarists are starting to fumble notes for the first time in decades. It's just really comforting to know that Green Day is going to be around for a while longer, and that I'll be able to keep following them for many years to come.

Maybe we'll get something like nimrod. The first single will be vintage green day, kind of a safe move. And the rest of the album will be totally different. Nimrod's first single was hitchin a ride and that didn't sound like the entire album. I'm really excited for this album! Let's stay optimistic!

I wouldn't consider Hitchin A Ride vintage GD but more of a punk take on the Stray Cats.  It was different for what they had been doing in the past.

This gives me another random GD thought, so sorry about that but.

Green Day are so transcendent, you just can't compare them to any other band.

Remember Ronnie Blake, or whatever his name is, recording horns for the album. I don't get the negativity. I'm really excited for this album.

Well, I mean, this is coming off an overly long, lesser version of American Idiot and what's essentially a triple album where the vast majority of the songs sound basically the same and was at one point described by the band as "epic" and was apparently expected to "blow our minds" (although I have absolutely no idea how they could have come to that conclusion, because it certainly couldn't have been musically because they didn't really do anything interesting musically with the trilogy, and with the existence of something like 69 Love Songs sheer volume of material means pretty much nothing if you can't back it up with consistent quality).

I have no idea how the trilogy even came into being to be honest. Makes me think that they must have been surrounded by a bunch of yes men and rooted firmly in their own assholes for such a thing to happen, and I don't even understand how they could be. I mean, 21st CB's reception was merely lukewarm and none of its' singles had much staying power, even 21 Guns was eventually forgotten about, so they weren't exactly at their peak at the time.

That whole entire era was so bizarre.

I've always wanted to consider the Trilogy as a kind of Warning-like album, but then it is too much of a failed throwback to the Lookout-era simplicity and '70s inspirations rather than an evolution like Warning was. Sonically it disappointed I think because that simplicity was too artificial in the power chords and the horrible vocal filters. It didn't feel 'honest'. It lacked passion and emotion and quantity prevailed over quality. At least Warning had no filler or meaningless tracks like Dos! did. I personally assume that for the band 12 will be a new beginning like AI was, whilst being sonically more of a Warning-style evolution than a revolution. I think we'll only after hearing the entire album multiple times and letting it soak in be able to gauge where the band is headed.

Well, if Green Day can somehow pull of another 'new beginning' and can develop a new solid fan base of people under 25, I think that'll solidify them as the biggest band of our generation.

If the first Bang Bang video on YouTube can get 1M views in the first couple days, and over 5M by the end of August, that'll be a good sign they're still relevant.

If the video will be good, at least 500k views will be from me alone

That's not really the point. What I'm trying to say is that the lead single isn't indicative of the whole album.

That didnt' come through in your post.  But I agree, the lead single is not necessarily indicative of the entire album.  However, you did say Hitchin A Ride was vintage GD.  I don't believe it was, I think it was an indicator of a diverse album.  It was something they had not done before.  I am holding out judgement until I hear the new single, but from the description, it sounds like it may be similar to what they did 25 years ago.

Fake My Own Death has nearly 3M views in slightly over a month, Bored to Death nearly 10M over a period of three months. It definitely an attainable goal.

I think so.. And being able to still do that after 25 years and 12 albums is pretty fucking incredible for a punk rock band 😀

Indeed. The same goes for Blink and Sum. This is slightly off-topic, but I think Sum has delivered a badass comeback song and I hope Bang Bang will sound just as fresh yet familiar enough.

I still can't believe that they titled it "Bang Bang".

I agree for sure. I've watched the sum video at least 10 times, and the song is even better than I thought it would be! They didn't miss a beat at all and I'm glad brown sound is back 😬

If Green Day can pull off similar kind of mood for their comeback, combined with an awesome energetic video, it could be pretty insane!

It would love it. FMOD has that Chuck feeling. I want Bang Bang to have an American Idiot feeling: fresh, energetic and epic as fuck

it's not really a comeback, just a new album :D They've pretty much always taken this long since Warning.

I think it feels like a comeback after the unremarkable passage of the Trilogy. Remember, in the mind of the casual listener they haven't produced something memorable since 2009's 21 Guns. Bang Bang and 12 need to nail it.

Well, if we're judging by the review of the song, it sounds like a good possibility! Hopefully they can make a bad ass video to go with it

It's gonna be a comeback I think. Such as happened in 2004, it's going to be the third rising!

Yeah well then that depends on how the album will be. But it's still not a "comeback" if a band regularly publishes new stuff :D

Yeah, of all the silliness we've bantered and bickered about, we haven't yet talked about the style and content of an accompanying music video. I'm hoping for a real video, not just a live performance like Oh Love.

"Comeback" as in "return to popularity amongst the mainstream" is what that really means.

Yeah, but the Trilogy did not exactly turn many heads. To many people, GD hasn't produced anything noteworthy since 2009. For them, it is a comeback.
