^^ hmm I'm not familiar with that photo, but it looks like Trilogy era

Yeah, the "x" jacket pretty much confirms that theory.

Nothing about the title screams green day but maybe it will be cool to switch it up a little bit.

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking. "Bang Bang" doesn't sound at all like a very GD-ish title to me, at least.

yeah kinda right...i think it should relate to the sound of a gun shot...maybe something against politics...or police officers..idk just my guess

We'll see. Nowadays no artist dares to say anything serious about anything. For example, American Idiot and Holiday told about problems and what's wrong with USA, Iraq War and Geroge W. Bush. There's not such a movement anymore. Everything is just blank, or at least that's how I see mainstream music at the moment. I don't mean that the band has to fit in the current mainstream and radio, but it would be really cool to see them there again.

I'd also say the listeners want bubblegum music. Most people use music as an escape - something to help they forget about life while they drive to work and school - they don't want to hear about the harsh realities of 2016. They want to hear Justin Timberlake sing "Dance, dance, dance"

I'm not sure that I agree with that. I'm pretty sure that Beyonce at least is putting out relatively politically-charged music, and she's huge in the pop mainstream. There's plenty of music that supports liberal viewpoints at the moment. There's not nearly as much conservative-oriented music in the mainstream, unless you count country music (I don't know a lot about it because I don't like it, though I tend to lean right. I know that a bunch of the musicians are way farther right than I'd ever be in my life, but is the music they make ever political? I have no idea.) and Megadeth, I guess.

Why announce it so early in advance rather than just release it outright? I mean 10 days out is a pretty long time for this sort of thing.

Also, I really really hope this doesn't end up sounding anything like the trilogy (despite the fact that that title sounds like a song that could've appeared on Uno! Dos! Tre!)

I'm assuming you've never heard of artists like Kendrick Lamar, or Kanye West, or hell, even Beyonce.

Well what if they they just randomly released it and nobody was there to hear it, because nobody had a clue it was coming out? I like to have something to look forward to and be excited about. Just releasing it without announcing it beforehand would be like "So we made a new album I guess. Listen to it or don't, I don't really give a damn"

Tbh so does Misery, Holiday, Waiting, Fashion Victim, and every other song title that's not overly poetic like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams". The song title could have appeared on any album, really. We still have no idea what it's going to be about, so yeah.

You do realize there's this thing called social media right? As long as your established artist, you don't even really need promotional material anymore, twitter/instagram/facebook etc. pretty much take care of it all.

This has to be the fastest moving thread I've ever seen on here. It's been just over a day and it's on page 46 already. If Bang Bang is anything like this thread, it'll be fast-paced and full of past references.

whilst social media helps, it's not exhaustive at all!

Seriously though, I've learnt from other bands' music that I really don't want songs to be loaded chock-full of references to older music. If used in moderation and subtly, it's fine. If the lyrics read like the ones to a large part of the Angel of Retribution album (not bashing it, I love it), it's probably not a good idea. Within a concept album like AI, though, that's a different story.

Wow, I really CANNOT go a few hours without making a reference to Priest. I may have a problem.

I don't agree 100% with you. People have the worst attention spans and expect results immediately nowadays. They might be excited about an announcement one day and completely forget about it by the time the single is released.

I wonder if bang bang will be the opening track for the next album. If there's a title track then I assume that would be first, but i'm gunna assume that bang bang would be one of the first 4 songs or so.

also, this thread kinda reminds me of when I was 14 and warning was about to come out. I got on napster and tried to find a leak of some songs and I ended up downloading a song that was labeled as being on warning but it just ended up being 2nd Street by Pinhead Gunpowder. now I feel old. seriously, I just brought up napster.

Well on top of that you have Apple promotion through its' use of banners. Same with Amazon music, Spotifiy, Tidal etc.

Do we agree that Rolling Stone still not saying a word can only mean one thing (and not that they're lazy asses)?

Hopefully the title of the song isn't an indication of the chorus just being composed of the words "bang bang" over and over again ala Let Yourself Go.

A 4 year wait for something like that would be heartbreaking, especially if for whatever reason the production style resembles the trilogy.

I think I'm having a fucking aneurysm at the thought of it all.

Yes, I realize it exists, I'm actually studying it. Thanks for the patronizing tone though.

Still, if they decide they want the song to be released on the radio for the first time, it helps to know that a few days beforehand. I don't listen to the radio and neither does anyone of my friends or anybody my age that I know. So if they hadn't announced it, I would have missed it. And if they want to release it via radio, then that's their choice and their way to go. You can't just drop something like a new song or a new album and expect anyone, who's not a fan and monitors their social media, to actually know or care about what's happening. My friend who likes Green Day casually had no idea they were even recording a new album and for sure wouldn't have even noticed if they suddenly posted a new song.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but it seems like they didn't intend for the single to be announced the way it was. Through Instagram, 11 days in advance, with a short explanation from Billie. We were having talks about a single being released called "Bang Bang" because some radio station gave out that information before the Instagram post. I think Billie's post was more of a way to answer speculation officially after that station spilled the beans.
