Trilogy Discussion

I really like the Trilogy. I can't understand why it's so underrated. What I like much of Uno, Dos and Trè is their mixing, that a lot of people seem to consider one of its worst thing. I mean, when Nuclear Family begins it's so powerful and the sound is very full. Of course you can't ask a band to keep always the same raw sound of Dookie/Insomniac: GD need to evolve, right?

Another fact is that GD released 37 songs where at least two thirds of them can compare with their greatest works (all the singles, expecially X-Kid and songs like Lady Cobra, Ashley, Little Boy Named Train, Nuclear Family and the amazing Brutal Love). IMO most people don't appreciate the albums just because of that third of songs they don't like.

I tried several times to listen to the three albums in order and it has always been awesome, because I could experience all kinds of emotions from the fun of Kill The DJ to the sadness of The Forgotten.

Maybe people just don't like the idea of 3 albums released in 3 months. Actually that's very cool.

I do like how Stop When The Red Lights Flash reminds me of traffic lights--that's a cool part of the song.

I remember listening to it while playing NFS:lol:

You have good points there, End of the World. I agree that only a fraction of the 37 songs are not good (in my opinion) but I at least gave the other songs like Nuclear Family, X-Kid, Angel Blue, and Stop When The Red Lights Flash a try. I even tried songs I dislike Oh Love, Kill the DJ, and Nightlife, and those didn't work for me.

The evolution part is true--I'm glad that Green Day has a lot of variety in their discography, even Nimrod has a nice variety of songs in it. The thing is that when a band evolves, you're either going to like their new style or not like it. I've heard people not like American Idiot because they say Green Day sold out to the emo crowd, and while I see their point, that doesn't mean I dislike American Idiot. I actually love that album & the rock opera behind it. Different songs and themes work for different people.

And yeah, releasing a few albums within 3 months is awesome. Green Day is the only band I know of that's done just that.

I couldn't agree with you more! A lot of people I know made a judgement of the trilogy after only listening to one song (and a few sneaky comments about the artwork!). There's so much variety in the 37 trilogy songs that every GD fan (or general music fan) should be able to find one that they can enjoy!:toocool:

And for me, I don't see that releasing the trilogy was a mistake on GDs part (despite what my friends think!!!). The band tried something new, realised any flaws/acknowledged the reception the albums got and were able to establish what sort of sound they wanted for themselves - eventually bringing us the absolute masterpiece that is Rev Rad!!

I agree with almost everything that you wrote, but specially with this part. I also like very much the mixing of the trilogy, that many people bash. I find it very clear, you can hear everything, all the instruments, and it's very powerfull to me.

The more I see people criticise the trilogy, more i get the feeling that people got bothered by the sexual content of some songs, the whole rehab thing, and the consequent lack commercial sucess and just decided to turn their back to the albuns. There's people that barely listened to the trilogy and criticise it. Sometimes it may be tough for someone to ignore the outside context of the era and pay atention only to the music, but I think that any green day fan that give it a shot with a open heart, can be positively surprised.

I know I probably one of the few to say that, but I like almost all the songs on the albuns. I don't think the trilogy is Green Day's best work, but I also don't find it to be their worst, and I think that it's sooo underestimated.

I totally agree with you! I think that a lot of people may disregard the trilogy because of the rough time it was for the band (eg Billie's addictions and things like that). The band seem to want to distance themselves from the trilogy because of the time of their career it represents, and maybe some GD fans want to distance themselves from it too? Nevertheless, there's a good chunk of trilogy songs that I am happy to listen to whenever they pop up in my GD playlist!!

Anyways, I MUST like the Trilogy. It's a part of my life (my middle school). If I had never listened to Stray Heart on MTV that 22 of December 2012 (that's why my name is End Of The World, I discovered GD the day after the predicted end of the world, December 21st 2012) now I wouldn't know anything about GD. I grew up with that albums and I learned to play the bass with that songs...

I grew up with the albums too! And speaking of bass, I've been really digging Mike's bass solo in Makeout Party. It's badass!!!:toocool:

I think that's all the song references . There's also the real life stories: Billie attending a barbecue and having to piss a lot and eventually ending up actually pissing on the barbecue, Billie's brother accidentally pissing in Billie's mouth when they were in the bath together as little kids, Adrienne informing Billie that he'd got up in the night and pissed in the hotel cupboard and flushed the hanger, and Billie drinking a lot of Guinness and going to sleep and dreaming that he pissed in his suitcase and then waking up and finding piss in his suitcase. Life experience reflected in art :D

Edit: Just thought of another one to add to your list lol, "I'll stand above you just to piss on your grave"

Wow, that must be a lyric I can never understand, because I had to google that one.   Nice catch.   I also realized that I didn't include the most recent "We're all getting pissed and every bodies bouncing off the plural wall"

That is some of the most silliest shit I ever read. Who really gives a fuck if something meets this definition of Emo? Like does it make it less cool or what?

I enjoy American Idiot too and I'm not emo. Why don't you go ask them about why they think Warning was the last good album (I love that album a lot but it's not the last good one)? I've only seen some people say this crap on the YouTube comments.

I just watched the Oh Love video again (because I wanted to make gifs of the acceptable parts like a responsible adult) and it's worse than I remember  I really think the models thing could have been executed well and he got the atmosphere right, but the way they're all sitting around with their mouths wide open and stroking each other is ridiculous. It's just trying too hard to be sexy and nothing else.

I actually think the venue for the video is a great place to just watch the band play. The girls are completely unnecessary. It had the potential to be a great video

Totally agree! It was really well shot, too. Such a shame it turned out that way.

Tre was the first album I threw on today. It is amazing, I love every song off of it and yes, Walk Away is awesome! Some great lyrics there. Musically it gives you a bit of everything. These are all standout tracks, crying damn shame this album wasn't huge. Definitely would have done much better not part of the Trilogy, and given a different name and everything. Either way, classic album!

Every time I visit this thread I feel like "yes, I am here to defend the Trilogy"

Seriously, I don't understand the hate of people.

8th Avenue Serenade and X-Kid are among the best songs Green Day has ever made.

What do you find to be their worst?   For me personally, it's Kerplunk.  I know that isn't a popular opinion but I believe they've gotten better over time.  1039 was a pretty cool album and Kerplunk has some cool tracks on it but overall there isn't anything on it that just floors me.

If I had to get rid of two albums from their discography it would be their first two albums.     After that though, I wouldn't be able to decide.

At least it's not "I like your BM-excellent tits with a tattoo of a pig sniffin' glue"

I feel like a cello.  Sniffing glue like pigs over the rainbow way up high.  BM-excellent tits make me wanna better way to die.

I think I am starting to like the trilogy better than AI. Putting aside "I like your BM-excellent tits" and things like that, these albums all have something great about them. Some examples are: Carpe Diem, Lazy Bones, Brutal love, X-kid, Oh love, and Stray Heart. Those are some of GDs best. Great songs from AI: Homecoming, letterbomb.
