What type of song are you hoping the lead single to be?

Seeing as how the first single should be released in a couple months, what type of single do you hope/think it will be?

1) Politically Charged - A song like Minority, American Idiot?

2) Mid-Tempo Rocker - A song like Oh Love, Stay The Night?

3) Rock Ballad - A song like 21 Guns, Boulevard of Broken Dreams?

4) Angsty Pop-Punker - A song like Basket Case, Longview?

5) 60's Throwback - A song like Stray Heart/Mother Mary (The direction I'd personally like to see them tackle more)

Something completely different??

I am ok with anything but #2 if I hear anymore mid-tempo pop-rock from Green Day I may explode.

Realistically I think the song will fall on a spectrum, ranging from "This would have been too experimental for Nimrod" to "Is this the trilogy?"

Probably 4 or 5. The FHT stuff should be its own album imo, but they'll probably throw it on there anyway. Can't complain if they do, its always fun.
As a single, a "60s throwback" would probably do very well, because that sort of stuff has caught on lately.

Overall, I'd like to hear something more aggressive, less wishy-washy. I enjoy the trilogy but something Nimrod-esque would be a happy medium.
The singles for Nimrod were still pretty bleak though.

I'm not too impressed with Devil's Kind, so I'm hoping it was just for the movie's sake and not the album.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Something similar to Stay Heart, but maybe with a little more of a Nimrod type feel, like Worry Rock.

I'd rather something epic like Jesus of Suburbia than any sort of radio friendly single.

A song like Nightlife.

Whoever is in charge of picking their singles did an awful job with the trilogy, and their entire marketing/promotions team have dropped the ball since 2009.
So I just hope that whatever direction they choose to go with, it includes hiring a new staff. If it works that way.

2 or 4. I know how excited I was when Oh Love was released. Such an awesome song followed by a great album.

I would like something like #4, something to scream "Hey! We're Back!"

The rock ballad would be a good song for a second single, given that a lot of casual Green Day fans seem to love the songs like 21 guns and BOBD.

something angry

Something not boring basically . I don't mind in what style that's achieved but I just hope it's something that really grabs your attention/imagination in some way and isn't "safe". Whatever the ballsiest song on the album is I hope it's that.

As for the single, I would love to see something Beatlesque since Billie is quite good at it.   The songs for These Paper Bullets are outstanding.  Plus, they are catchy and appeal to a wide audience.  That could bring them back into the limelight more.  Then I want the rest of the album to be different than anything they have done yet.  I want them to surprise me at what they have come up with, again.

i prefer a song like "hitchin a ride" something with humor and no political side.  they can also combine 2 songs and make brain stew/jaded 2 that would be fine.

So i'm guessing my choice is #4 angry punker (not pop, it's supposed to kill pop-punk)

And if they have to make something political i hope it's like "Stuck With Me" rather than "American Idiot"

or Road To Acceptance..? that would be amazing.

I'll take anything as long as it doesn't sound like the trilogy, or worse, the 2015 Christmas song. I'd love to hear some political lyrics though, we haven't gotten a new political song in a while, we only got one with the trilogy, which is totally fine, but I kinda miss that.

Number 1 or 4. American Idiot as the lead single was perfect in terms of pacing, feeling and message. Longview was unique song for them, even though the mainstream audience had yet to really find out who Green Day were when the single was released. In retrospect I wonder if they would have broken as big had it been the second single, with Basket Case it Welcome to Paradise introducing them?

From a marketing and "we are back" standpoint, it has to be a combination of #1 and #4 or just #4. That is what Green Day is known for, whether they (or we) like it or not (and I do). Putting out a song that people expect from Green Day, in my mind, increases the likelihood of success. And don't give me the BS about how "Green Day doesn't care about success." Yes they do... I promise.

"American Idiot" was good a good choice from AI.

"Know Your Enemy" was a good choice too. Though, "East Jesus Nowhere" would have been better. But, you could argue that EJN should have served as the knockout punch for 21CB as you'd have KYE, 21 Guns, and then top it off with EJN. Speaks 100% to how awesome of an album 21CB is.

"Oh Love" was a terrible choice as a first single, but it could have been fine released later. As we all know, "Stay the Night" or "Carpe Diem" would have been better from Uno.

Ok, ramble over.

Keep on rambling, because I fully agree with your entire post.

Couldn't agree more! I'm not sure if you've heard 'Regretfully Yours' but if that song somehow makes it on to the album, it would be a solid second single! If it's anything how it sounded in These Paper Bullets, I think it would be a big hit.

I saw These Paper Bullets, I'm the one that posted the links to the songs I recorded when I went.  So, yes, I've heard Regretfully Yours.  However, I prefer if none of the songs make it onto the album because I don't want them to recycle songs, I want all new ones.  However, that type of song would be great.

I just went to check out the song. It definitely is an unusual song for Green Day to release/perform and that would be perfect to release as a single.

But I agree with JJ1964, I don't want them to recycle songs. But if they could have at least one song on the new album that would be somewhat like Regretfully Yours, that would be really awesome!

I hear ya for sure, and agree for the most part.. Especially when it comes to songs like Devil's Kind and Ordinary World that are decent songs, and make for good additions to Soundtracks. However, looking at it objectfully, casual fans who don't really go digging for Billie's songs would probably really enjoy a song like Regretfully Yours and shouldn't miss out on it. And, I think hearing a Green Day version of this would be friggen awesome :)

Agreed! I think if it could sound that good played by someone else, it could only be better performed by Green Day lol.

Why do you want to hear songs you've already heard when we haven't gotten new songs in 4 years???  It is such a waste.  They might as well do an album of standards by that metric.  I want new stuff.

Lol, I'm saying I agree, and especially for the Geezer tunes.. but technically we haven't heard a Green Day/Studio version of Regretfully Yours and it's 5 star tune that really shouldn't go to waste, and should be on an album (And possibly a single)! :P

WE haven't heard a studio version of the Geezer tunes either, and you are not agreeing.  You want to see the wasted space of including a song that Billie wrote for a totally different reason as a GD song.  I agree to that type of song, but not to reuse songs that we have all heard already.

5 Star?? Ok then...

Either GDC is reactionary to every song that comes out or you all have a terrible taste in music.
