I can't speak for the UK, only the US but I would imagine it is similar in the UK.  Until a few years ago, if show on network TV, used certain words such as shit, fuck, etc the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) would fine them.  So essentially it was illegal to use certain words in their programming.  That has since been reduced and the FCC can't really fine anymore.  However, there is still a stigma of what can be said.  A show like The Voice is considered family programming and would lose a substantial piece of their audience by introducing previously banned words.

Yeah, I know. It's the same here in Brazil. That's why I think he would have done better with another song.

well fuck is still banned from network shows no matter what time and for the major networks like ABC NBC CBS and Fox they still have to follow guidelines set in place since those are free channels the networks thats on cable like FX Comedy Central etc can say shit and other words except fuck

All of the "seven words you can't say on TV" are technically banned, but the FCC is no longer allowed to fine for them.  Also, they are not banned for fleeting words on live TV, for instance when GD wins their next grammy, if Billie says fuck in his acceptance speech, it does not have to be censored.

This sounds really strict.  Pretty much anything is allowed over here after 9pm, the only word that's still restricted is the one that starts with C and ends in unt, and that still pops up occasionally in films shown very late.  I was a little surprised that whore and stoned weren't allowed through, even before 9, stoned especially.  Maybe it was his own decision as he thought it might have a negative impact on his audition.

I think it's probably because it's a very family oriented programme. If it was more of an adult programme on at 8pm pretty sure whore and stoned would be allowed (shit is even sometimes allowed in certain types of programmes just before 9pm now) but not so much on ITV family entertainment.

Yeah, even if the words were allowed it probably wouldn't be in the producer's best interests to include them, they don't add a huge amount to the audition but there'd still be a risk of receiving complaints.

Exactly, it's a family entertainment programme so they keep it kid friendly even if they might not legally have to.

I'm not trying to judge or anything, I have a mental disease too and the song speaks to me as well. Still, I hate the censorship. Back when I watched The Voice US, on the season BJ was Christina's assistant at, a girl I really liked (Michaela Paige) sang a song which had "shit" in the chorus and she had to put her finger on her lips instead of saying it. It was her worst performance and sent her home. I don't want to hate, just saying that this is a powerful song and it sounds pretty good like this, but also a bit odd without the censored words.

Personally I think it's better to push the envelope by playing songs like this regardless, and just amending them a bit, then to completely disregard the idea of playing it because of the restrictions put on swear words. Casual viewers probably aren't going to know every word to the song, anyway, so it's not like changing the lyrics a bit is going to influence whether or not a contestant performs poorly. I'm assuming most of the critique is based on their singing voice and their delivery and performance anyway.

Then you sign up as someone with Tourette's to sing the theme song from Titanic and during your show you call all the judges cunts and they even give you 4 yess and tell you how talented and brave you are.

It's not my style, but I always enjoy when people add their own creative spins to Green Day songs. This is one of those songs when played slow, it sounds really sad. And i resonated with him.

He's now through to the semi-finals, so the judges clearly liked his audition.

Just seen the video, his voice sounds great, but it's a little too slow. However, it's nice to see someone audition on one of these talent shows thinking outside of the box with their song choice.
