As much as I like Billie, listening to him in an interview is tedious and irritating to me. He takes way too long trying to get his point across and I get bored.

Same. I love the guy, but most of the time I wish he were more concise. I'm curious about this though, mostly because Green Day and Metallica are two of my favorite bands ever and it would be interesting to see them interact in a different context which is not a live performance.

Yeah that's the live performance I was talking about. Form what I understood this event should be different though, in the sense that there should be more talking involved than playing.

Man, that's gonna be frigging awesome! I know it won't be a live performance but it would be just great if they covered American Idiot and Master Of Puppets.

To be honest, I didn't check out most of his recent public speaking. He always seemed to have trouble getting across his thoughts. He just couldn't put a sentence together.

It really depends on his comfort zone, but overall his public speaking has improved dramatically.  Compare his speech on Friday and the Rock Hall speech to when he did Broadway Talks with Michael Mayer.  On Friday he had a few um's and a few thought pauses but overall it wasn't horrible.  The same with the Rock Hall speech.  In the Broadway Talks interview, there are 10,000 ums, he fidgets, he scratches his arm, he pokes at his neck.  It was a great interview with alot of great information, but I felt so bad for him because he was clearly uncomfortable.

Now look at one of my favorite interviews, the one where he talks about pot with Bill Maher.  There are a few fidgets and neck scratches, but overall he seems very much at ease.  I think that is probably because I think he is friends with Bill Maher.

He is never going to be able to deliver a speech like Barack Obama, but I think he is getting better

I agree he improved. At Rock Hall he was coherent despite being moved and speaking on top of his head. I feel differently about the Bill Maher interview though. He is more comfortable in it and doesn't fidget but you can see he's putting a lot of effort in speaking and is careful about what he's saying. Sometimes he sounds as someone who is trying a bit too hard. However, it's obvious he's trying to improve. He can become an ok speaker if he goes on this way but it clearly isn't his thing.

Well you have to consider that the Bill Maher interview was several years ago, similar to the Broadway Talks interview.  I was just trying to point out that he is much better when he is comfortable, not his public speaking was good.

Agreed, it is not his thing, he is better when he is singing.

He can fidget and say nothing and that's fine with me. But really, I think he's kind of shy and geeky, unless he's playing music. His speaking has improved, but I bet he'll be really nervous.  I thought looked really nervous  right before his speech at the RARHOF induction; even though he did a pretty good job at the speech, he looked ready to throw up! He looked more comfortable last friday at Fox Theater (2/19) and spoke pretty well, but I'm guessing the University enviroment might freak him out more. I hope someone records it.

True, he looked very nervous. Remember how he was mumbling trying to memorize his speech while Mike was talking?

I doubt he's got a reason to worry about the uni environment though. Students tend to be an open audience and he's a pretty cool guest no matter how bad he's at talking.

Yes, that's true, I didn't think of it that way. And yes, he could just sit there and fidget and be himself and it will be fine!

I think the RHOF was a very big deal for them though and much sits on Billie's shoulders, you hear the difference in the crowd response when he steps forward to speak.  They were excited by Tre and Mike but go mental for Billie.  Also they must have been aware that they are so much younger than anyone else inducted and with some their heroes in the room.  I think that Billie is the classic performer who can do anything on stage, strip, fake masturbate etc but is actually quite shy when he is just being himself.  Totally agree he's getting better at public speaking but think he will go his own sweet way regardless of what others think.

He is not a great public speaker and probably never will be.  But, even though he is uneducated, he is very intelligent and has experience that very few people have.  He has experience in all aspects of the music industry, movie acting experience, broadway acting experience.  It will be fascinating to hear his perspective on things.

Agreed. The whole atmosphere of the room completely changed when Billie stepped up because as much as everyone loves Tre and Mike, Billie is the face of the band so to speak. That's a lot of pressure! I thought he did really well though

Agreed but I do love that he is himself and doesn't try to be all suave or something.  I love his intro at the Tony awards, the way he ambled on, hands in pockets in front of all the dinner suits and looked them in the eye, like come on then!  Also agree that he's really smart and could rings round a lot of these folks.

Absolutely agree.  I have always found his awkwardness charming.  To me, it makes him appear genuine.  I also love how he is so humbled when he attends events like the rock hall ceremonies.  He really is amongst his peers, but he never seems to view it that way.

Right, he's not fake and plastic like annoying Hollywood types. He's insanely intelligent and talented, and a great performer.  At the same time, deep down he is humble and shy,  and the fact that he  remains true to  himself, as well as Tre and Mike,  has greatly contributed to Green Day's longevity.   I hope he's comfortable enough at the Front Row with Lars event to allow his experience and intelligence to shine through. I'm sure he will be warmly welcomed and received, and that will help a lot with his confidence. Is anyone here at GDA going, that could tell us how it went? Unless the college plans to record it and maybe post it somewhere, that would be cool too.

From the right up it looks like it is only open to Berkeley students

I just applied for scholarship. I'll update you when they answer.

Btw, do you guys remember that old interview in which he was hating on posh Berkeley students?

No but that's kind of ironic now isn't it? He's rolling in the big bucks now :D

Edit: Maybe there is a Berkeley student going, who is also a member here?

I think it is more than a rich thing with Berkeley.  It is a state school so the costs are actually not that high.  But, it is a very prestigious school, very hard to get into.  I think the acceptance rate is some where around 15%.  So, you can really brag if you get into Berkely

Also, if I recall correctly, Brat was written about rich college kids. Billie, Mike and maybe even Tre used to live with college students at the Ashby house - Green Day and probably a few more roomies were in the basement, college kids lived upstairs. I think in some early interviews Billie implied they outright hated the band.

True, it's very prestigious.  The students are fortunate to have Billie Joe speak there.
