Fair enough. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I haven't really liked Mike's bass tone post-Warning.

edit: and I know he hasn't used the signature amps and basses exclusively on the last 5 records. Whatever equipment he was using in the studio from 1997-00 is the perfect tone, to me.

actually, i totally agree with you except for the part about the trilogy. nimrod and warning have great bass sounds, he was using vintage p-basses and mesa boogie amps during those years, but also different studio amps too, I read that when recording warning he had 6 different amps set up while recording. I also read that he's used an old yamaha amp on a lot of recordings too, but i thought he stopped using ampeg after insomniac.

He started using Fender amps around the AI era, but i'm not sure if he recorded with those or not. I think at the core he had a similar bass tone on AI and 21st to the other records, but i think a lot of the tone might have gotten changed in the mixing process, they probably cut some of the lows and cranked certain mid frequencies in order to make it stand out from the heavy guitar sounds on those records. the trilogy had a thin guitar sound so mike's bass was able to keep more low end in tact, and I think it sounds awesome. If the trilogy had a heavier guitar sound, the bass might have sounded different. Mike did say that the fender amp and also his signature bass we a huge part of the sound for the trilogy. I'm just kinda shocked that he's using an ampeg with a ric on this new one, he's been such a fender fanboy for a long time now!

i'm gunna dig out some old bass player magazine interviews with him now haha

I know for sure that Mike recorded AI (or at least a part of it) with a vintage Ampeg SVT.

shit, just read through the sept 2004 issue of Bass Player and Mike didn't mention what he used in the studio. He talked about his live rig though and he says that he had just switched back to 8x10s, and that when he was working with fender on designing his signature bass he spent time at the Fender HQ he spent some time with their new amps (which I think at the time were the old Sunn amps just rebranded as Fender), and he really liked them. he described the Fender 8x10 cab as "like an Ampeg 8x10, but it sounded like it was coming from two feet closer; a little more present and immediate. I like the Ampeg cabs' low end response, but the Fender give me the attack I'm looking for".

i definitely know what he's talking about, the ampegs definitely have that distant sound and I feel like that's how the bass on American Idiot sounds, almost like there's a blanket over the amp

I don't know it sounds like random noise to me

I think on here the "random noise" is commonly referred to as "the trilogy" :P

I'm trying not to worry too much about the sound of the new album. There's no way they are going to disappoint the way The Living End did with their last 3 albums

I love the video Billie shared, it is cute as fuck.  I love the little games the band plays with us.  I am really, really, excited about new music.  However, I just can't get excited about 1.5 s of audio that may or may not be a song.  Maybe not even a new song, just a song.

I love Billie's video too, even his little noises and humming and crap, he's just having too much fun.  The whole thing is exciting! And I don't know, I still think it's a song...I just want to believe it!

By the way that place is a dump, those guys are slobs!

First we got pictures: Billie in front of a microphone, Tre's drums... now a video and a 2 second cryptic blast of music. What next? Is it safe to assume that we're going to start getting  more sneak previews with incrementally more information, leading up to an announcement??:runaround:

Yeah but that's not where they are now so the Otis myth can live on :P

What is the OTIS myth now? Pretty sure I clarified the myth a few pages ago :P

Not important but Perhaps we'll get some more song title with curse words in the title, like "F(woo) Time", "Jackass" and "Dirty Rotten Bastards".   I think one with an S word would fit nicely on the new album, but a B word would do nicely.  It would be hilarious if the title was really offensive but it was a beautiful ballad and the single.   Green Day's new power ballad, "_____________"

I've said this before (and frequently) but I have to stick to the topic at hand.  Really hoping for a mix like this:   Equal parts American Idiot and brand new sound, with a splash of Nimrod and a sprinkle of Warning.   That would be an awesome way to celebrate their career without doing a total nostalgia trip.   This album needs to be a comeback record and it should be freakin' huge.   I'm thinking self titled, or like I said about songs, perhaps an obscenity for album title.   American Motherf.....okay.   I'm gonna stop now.   But yeah.

Since I have a feeling  GD likes doing a shit ton of songs on albums to justify waiting 4 years for it, I will assume this will be a 3 hour album with 60+ songs :P

In all seriousness, im expecting 12-15 songs maybe.

We already got that with the trilogy.

I would rather have a well thought out 12-15 song album than 60 plus mediocre songs.

better yet Im hoping for 60+ song shows :)

If they actually do an album of the same length as 21CB now with the sound of AI and before, it would be awesome. Mike using Ampegs and something different to his signature, I think we could actually be getting something awesome again.

no splash OR sprinkle?   How about a dollop of Dookie?  A wave of Breakdown?   A lightning storm of Tre?   Hail of Insomniac?  A tornado of Uno?  A dookie of Dos?  A raindrop of 1039?   A puddle of kerplunk?
