For what its worth, sum 41 just announced an hour ago that their new album will be out oct 7th and they released a single. So it wouldnt surprise me if green day announces something this weekend or next week and their album comes out around mid october

The Sums announced their album a week or two ago. In any case, we shouldn't be using other bands as a barometer.

It would be cool if you are browsing on YouTube through some random videos, and all of a sudden you see a banner appearing announcing Green Day's new album

You're right, but I wouldn't be surprised if GD was waiting for California (Blink-182) to be released (officially) before saying something. That's just a good marketing practice since there is a large overlap in fan base and they wouldn't want another release to overshadow a GD announcement.

I hope I'm wrong.

What were there pictures of? Album clues?

It's a random Instagram account (with 23 followers) that posted a photo of a crazy cat and mentioned Billie Joe in the caption. No relevance.

Just a reminder that we know nothing about the new album, it might as well not be announced until next year.

OK, but everyone's jumping on the hype train so sure that it'll be announced next month and I'm just saying that might not be the case at all. The way they keep everything under wraps, it feels weird of Green Day to do a surprise announcement like this. I just don't think they're as far along as some say. And we have many "clues" as you say, but 0 pieces of concrete evidence that could lead me to believe that an announcement is imminent.

Agreed, it isn't even a clue.  Billie joe said I hope the album is out in the fall.  I do consider him a reliable source

Artists say that all the time. Metallica's been saying that about their Death Magnetic followup for 4 years at least.

You might be right. And I've been thinking about it constantly as well.

But the thing is, we have no idea what they might be planning with the new album. For all we know they've got this promotional plan ready to take off within the next couple of weeks or months.
They clearly don't want to rush things and that's a good thing I think.

That was probably their plan, but they're still waiting for Lars to get his takes right.

It's frustrating knowing so little about the album.  However, in the long run it's probably a good thing - I mean, look how much hype is going on here about nothing.  The mystery and building hype is gonna make the album release process itself more exciting.  I'm starting to move now from frustration to excitement, and to me that's a sign that it's probably coming soon.  This could be a very good summer.

Hmm. the Sum 41 single sounds better than the singles off The Getaway and California. I personally find the former to be a serious disappointment and lacking in passion and energy, whilst the latter just doesn't have the spirit of Tom's Blink and the lyrics are boring and repetitive. Are they bad albums? No, but they are very mediocre efforts from bands with a stellar discography and not comparable to even I'm With You and Dogs Eating Dogs.

Is it wrong of me to try to add some discussion that's deeper than just random guessing?

Without starting a RHCP discussion, I feel The Getaway has the best non Frusciante music they've made, although pre and post John are very different
