Merry Christmas! Here's a new Green Day song

I think everyone is really reading way too much into this and need to chill.  Whether this song is good or bad is totally subjective.  And whether this is good or bad really has no bearing on the future

jimmy, I thought your rep-whoring days were behind you. I'm very disappointed, see that this doesn't happen again

If there's one thing I'm good at, it's getting lots with minimal effort. You call it rep-whoring, I call it efficiency :P

I took it as "it doesn't sound like Green Day, it sounds bad, and Green Day normally doesn't sound bad." I took those details as her description of why it sounds like shit (which it does), not why it doesn't sound "punk." I only took her mentioning of "I defend people when they say Green Day isn't punk" as her explanation of how she's usually a Green Day supporter, despite the shit they usually get. I guess that's the beauty of writing — it's open for interpretation.

I beg to differ. If a band keeps releasing bad music, it indicates that the standards went down. If this song was on Shenanigans it would be one of the weakest tracks. Concerns about the future are understandable. It does seem that they're going south quality-wise.

They did this in a weekend though, they'd be bound to do a lot more for their next proper release.

Whether the lyrics are good or bad is definitely not subjective though...they are criminal. People may be justified in their annoyance or concerns about the lyrics because it's three years since we've had new music from the band (who used to write amazing songs) and the trilogy contained terrible lyrics also so one may wonder if indeed it's time to switch off the life support on the band because they are officially brain dead. It's just one song but they had essentially three years to write it and when the lyrics are that terrible it doesn't fill me with hope for the next album when Billie actually has to write more than one song.

Sure it is, everything about music is subjective. No two people will have identical definitions of good and bad.

They had 3 years to make the trilogy. The result is comparable with this song. That's why I'm worried that the standards slipped and this is now "normal" Green Day.

Now they know they can do something Trilogy-esque in a weekend, I'd imagine they want to stretch more and do something bigger for the album.

Ok then...Anyone here actually think the lyrics are good and why? I mean they literally make no sense so I failed see how anyone can say they are good. They can like them or like the song or certain words may make them feel warm and fuzzy but how anyone who speaks English can think they are good is beyond me really.

These are my feels in a nutshell. I understand that musical preference is subjective, but I can't for the life of me figure out how anyone can willingly subject themselves to listening to this shit (or most of the trilogy tbh). Once the "oh, new music!" hype is over, there's really no substance to any of this music.

As far as general Christmas cheer goes they work decently enough, I don't think they're great but that doesn't make them objectively bad.

Everything in life is subjective.  What people like or dislikeis very personal.  Plus I don't understand why everyone is worrued.  I want the band to have a great album but if they don't my life will still go on.  I just don't understand why everyone is so worried.

Well, I'm not sitting at home biting my nails worried about the next Green Day album. I've got much worse things to worry about. But I do care - I want them to make good music and I don't want to be disappointed when it comes out.

this is legit the most disappointing thing, not just about this song but about Green Day's last three albums. Every other album they've ever produced has given me good reason to revisit it time and time again. The last three - nah.

The angst about this song isn't about fans Grinch-ing it up and hating Green Day, it's the fans being worried that Green Day is going to substantially let us down again. The trilogy will be forgiveable if Green Day comes out with a solid new album. It doesn't have to be another American Idiot or Dookie, but it has to be musically solid and it cannot have the same lyrical/production-related weaknesses that the trilogy had. This song represents new music from Green Day that follows the footsteps of the Trilogy, and that's understandably worrisome to the fans. Will all of our lives go on happily without great new Green Day music? Of course. It'll just be really disappointing to see a band we've all invested so much time, money, energy, and (DARE I SAY??) love into to really fall apart in this way. I'd rather never have another Green Day album than have another flop like the Trilogy.

I agree 100%. I don't want to watch a slow, bitter embarassing end that includes me as a washed up band's last groupie. And I don't want to be disappointed again.

I mostly agree with all of you but to be honest, I'd rather have any Green Day than no Green Day at all. Even if I don't like the songs at all (I'm sure I'll like them to some extent), even if it puts Green Day's general opinion to the ground and makes me less proud of being a fan, the main thing for me is that they'll tour and play songs that I do like.

I pretty sure that if they went "ok no more Green Day" we'd all be like this:

It's like getting a Christmas gift from someone you weren't expecting to get anything from. And maybe you don't really like the gift and you will be dropping it off at Goodwill next week, but you are still touched that this person (band) took the time to think of you and give you a gift.

The fact that you're the 14th person to make this joke and people are still repping it says a lot about GDC.

Nah, it's more like when your obnoxiously rich aunt buys you an ugly sweater for Christmas after giving you really awesome birthday presents for years.

Normally when I get bad gifts from someone I regift them to someone else the next year. Who can I regift this song to?

Exactly! I'd rather them not produce any new content and just tour on a "greatest hits" setlist than produce something shitty again and be disappointed (House of Blues rocked and that only included two songs the last decade). Additionally, it'd be embarrassing as hell for them to deal with yet another flop of an album, especially after getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

I know I definitely have my expectations in check now as a fan. Before the trilogy was released, I was convinced they could do no wrong. Now I have no expectations at all for anything better than mediocre, which is why I laughed when I everyone said "you were expecting too much!" when I and others critiqued this song. I wasn't expecting anything at all. In fact, mediocre is OK with me. Like Kay said, I'd be happy with any album that's solid at this point. It doesn't have to be an earth shattering, mainstream, commercialized success. I just want it to be something real and genuine.
