Green Day - Classic Rock Stations?

This morning, while in my car, I tuned in to my second-favorite classic rock station in the DMV (BIG 100.3 - my favorite is 100.7* out of Baltimore) to hear the end of "When I Come Around."  Needless to say, I was more than a bit surprised - especially when "Basket Case" came on immediately afterward (I guess 100.3 does the "two for Tuesday" thing, too).  My question is: Is Green Day "classic rock" (in the radio sense of the word - keep in mind that this station primarily plays bands like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Clash, Springsteen, the Eagles, and Genesis), and have you ever heard Green Day (or any other '90s acts, like the Offspring, Nirvana**, etc.) played on classic rock stations?

*For those of you not in the area, the only real difference between the two stations (as far as I can tell) is that 100.3 will blank out profanity ("whore" on "Basket Case" wasn't censored, but I've heard the "funky kicks" version of "Jet Airliner" by Steve Miller on 100.3 and "goddamn" muted in "Life in the Fast Lane"), while 100.7 doesn't seem to care (even for stuff that would normally get them in trouble, like "shit" and "fuck").  Other than that, I can't think of much of a difference.
**I may be mistaken, but I seem to remember hearing a Nirvana song on 100.3 (or was it 100.7?) once.  I also heard "Losing My Religion" by R.E.M. on 100.3 a few years ago, for what it's worth.

I have heard them on local Classic Rock Stations.  You have to consider that they have been around for over 25 years.  That is considered pretty classic.  However, around here, we are starting to get some local classic alternative stations, that play alot of GD, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc.  I don't know if they would be played on a satellite classic rock station since there are so many varieties of stations for any band to be played on.  I don't listen to classic rock when I have satellite radio available so I wouldn't know.

No, it's not. I'd be genuinely surprised if I heard them on a classic rock radio. I doubt they're what classic rock fans want to hear as well.

If classic rock is stuff that are old and still famous ,why not? I also saw people making it a big deal at twitter ,it's like a trend to write "green day in classic rock radio, wohoo i'm old, since when?" but if most of those people would actually think before they follow that trend , that's not hard to understand. Those songs are old and still relevant. Unless classic rock means something like a mix between Mozart and Rock ,then they will have right to be against it.

Yes. Back at the beginning of this decade, there was a pretty intense debate within the classic rock radio genre of, "To grunge, or not to grunge." Grunging won out, and Nirvana slowly worked its way into classic rock programming.

It's no surprise, then, that Green Day--which is only one year younger than Nirvana--would start seeing tracks make it into the classic rock rotation. As a format, classic rock has been struggling lately. Most stations have already given up on the '60s, including most of the Beatles catalog, and many are easing the '70s back more and more to try and keep the, "Oh yeah, I remember that song," nostalgia that drives the format current.

So before too long, it's conceivable that bands like Blink-182, the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Coldplay, even RHCP and RATM could be the foundation of classic rock radio stations, with '70s and '80s stuff thrown in for good measure. I already hear a good bit of Metallica, GnR and a bit of NIN played on the format.

Yeah, I have had a similar experience with the classic rock station in my area (100.7 KKRQ), and it started probably as far back as 5 years ago that they would play Dookie tracks. Specifically When I Come Around and Basket Case. I haven't heard them play anything more recent (like from Insomniac or Nimrod) but those tracks seem to be a staple of the station's rotation, despite most tunes being played are from the '60s, '70s, and early '80s.

This is not surprising. The 90s is very much classic rock at this stage. When I come around is from an album that is almost 22years old. Same thing as when Green Day were just hitting the mainstream in 1994, the Beatles were classic rock.

I think a lot of places just base it purely on time (eg they'll play any successful mainstream rock that's 20 years old or older or from the 90s or older) rather than it being any kind of assessment of the act's genre beyond it being successful mainstream rock. Same with other genres too, 90s rap is definitely considered classic at this point.

No matter what type of album GD produce next they won't get air time on anything but classic rock stations.

Listened to a radio in the car today. There was an add saying that people can choose which "recent album " they want to hear. The choice was between Uno, Days Go By by The Offspring and another 2011/2012 album. That's the type of radio station that plays them.

At least Oz radios don't think it's 2012. :P

I love it when the Fox does that. I even requested When I Come Around once during the all request lunch hour.

I heard "Blue on Black" by Kenny Wayne Sheppard (1998!) and some Black Crowes (songs were from 1991 I think) on the Classic station here (Rock 101.1) and had the same reaction.  I felt the same way.  Is this classic?  Will Classic Rock stations continue to play 80's rock for all eternity?  I just looked up "Classic Rock" and it typically defined as "music ranging from the late 60's to the late 80's".  But it's 2016, a year when Green Day turns 30 and The Offspring 32, times are a changing.   I did read on the Classic Rock Format wikipedia page that in the 2010's some Classic station started adding a very small percentage of 90's music to the mix.  And even then only if it fit into the style of music that was simialiar to the 60's to 80's styles, or if it was a newer release by an older band.
