Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

Basically what C-dawg said. Everyone shits themselves over the song and honestly it's not that great. It's awkward, long, drawn out and its melody is rather generic. What do the lyrics even mean?

Old toys

This plastic heart

Loners and fools

Are tearing me apart

Bad luck

Bitters and soda

Anguish and shame

The modern fool

Bad sex

Buy me a train wreck

Something for my troubled mind

...?

People's reaction to it reminds of me DRB. It's not THAT good, and seems to try a bit hard to be more epic than it should be. I can think of plenty of more emotional, relatable songs with more epic tension or whatever than Brutal Love. Plus, they tried swapping Good Riddance for it as a concert-closer. Um, fuck you. No.

I can't even be arsed to explain it but it all makes perfect sense and is beautiful so there

Plus who actually claims to like DRB anymore?

Aww Kerplunk is cool. Warning is the worst, how boring can you get? And what makes it even worse is it's so obvious it should've been the awesome lightning man on there!

Congratulations, you just invalidated every opinion you've ever had :P

A totally boring photo of the band walking around that isn't even one of the most interesting photos from the shoot is better than the cool lightning man design that means "warning: danger of death" for the cover of an album called Warning? Each to their own :P

I agree with you, the album is one of Green Days best but the cover? No no no, looks like a cheesy boy band

Oh. Never mind, I'm an idiot, I thought you were talking about the album itself, because I can't read and it seems to be a relatively common opinion that it's a boring album! I agree with you entirely about the covers, but American Idiot has to be my favourite.

Haha, thought it was unusual to see anyone defend that cover!

I like the Warning cover simple cover since it has a 60's Kinks feel it resembles what a 60's cover would look like IMO

Didn't they already 'pay tribute' to the Kinks enough with that album? :P

Well you'll never see me doing that :D

Does GDC do something like a witness protection programme? Coz you might just need it :P

Plenty of people. I don't think it deserves as much praise as it gets, and there is a lot that can be done to improve it, but it's good fun to listen to and isn't the worst on the album.

If "not the worst on the album" is the best you can do then oh dear :P

Lol I don't mean the cover was a tribute to the Kinks themselves

Apart from the annoying 'yeah yeah yeah' intro, the first two parts are pretty good. They lyrics in the second part could do with some touching up I'll admit. I just wish the first two parts had been developed into fuller mini-songs You're a bassist, so you're legally obliged to like the bass solos and the guitar solo is pretty damn awesome. Unfortunately it falls down from there. Repeating a verse? Lazy writing. The whole 'carried away' outro? Boring and unconnected - it sounds like it belongs to a different song. Like I said, DRB isn't the greatest song ever, but it has its highlights and is fun to listen to. A bit like parts of the trilogy, really.

I still think the "carried away" outro would be so fucking epic live at a stadium.

It just sounds like they're ripping off the outro to Homecoming. While that outro can be annoying, it does kinda work for the song. The carried away outro just doesn't go with DRB

Slightly off-topic, but does anyone else think that GD should just stop making albums, embrace the fact that they're a "greatest hits" band now, and just run with it?

I can see them doing it to be honest. It worked out fantastically for The Rolling Stones, and Green Day have always been a live band rather than a studio band.

Obviously "Homecoming" is far superior but damn, I'll take what I can get from the Trilogy. At least DRB is listenable.

They're not Foo Fighters

Have you been to the Fangirls thread? Or any tour thread this past year?

Foo Fighters are still making albums though?

That said, Foo Fighters really are a greatest hits band. Their last album was the only one even close to having 10+ listenable songs.

nah they'll fade into obscurity more than they already have. i'm still in denial that the trilogy even happened tbh. all i listen to is ai and 21cb.

Well i meant the greatest hits bit, i love them but theyre just a generic rock band that always play it safe. Live they always play just the hits and it gets tiresome...

They're still only in their early 40s, there's plenty more time for them to make a comeback. They won't settle for becoming a greatest hits band just yet, they're writing music all the time.

Green Day have just hit this point where it's pretty much impossible for them to come out with a new album that can stand alone. No matter what they do, it'll be criticized as trying to be AI/Dookie/fill in the blank. I think it's too much to hope for them to brilliantly and successfully reinvent and rebrand themselves a second (or arguably, third) time. The Trilogy and the events surrounding it have left a really rotten taste in the mouths of much of their fandom, and they've sunk to near-irrelevancy in the broader scheme of things. Instead of hammering more nails in their coffin by producing more albums, maybe it'd be best for them to hit the road every few years and remind everyone why we love them by focusing on different albums/etc. each tour. They could re-live the old days, we could re-live the old days, new fans would be able to experience them live for the first time, it'd be a win all around.

(now watch me eat my words in three years after they come out with some new brilliant, critically acclaimed, and wildly successful album )

To be honest Demolicious reminded me of why i love Green Day and im really excited to see what direction they take next

that's because the hits are generally the best songs

Maybe for Foo Fighters, but that's not even true of Green Day, let alone any other band you care to mention. Big sellers =\= the best songs.

Why would I even do that?

Maybe I'm too much of a fangirl (or maybe this is an unpopular opinion) but GD concerts never get tiresome for me. The energy is always real and the songs always hit home for me.

No i know and ive seen Foo Fighters live and they kick ass. obviously the sets never get boring when you're there but still

that's because the hits are generally the best songs

Well i dont agree with that but ok haha
