Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

I'm interested in Longshot but I'm not excited enough to keep caring until we get something official. I'm not one of those people who get excited when a band shows they're in a studio. It could lead to nothing. It'S happened with other bands before.  I'd rather wait until we get some official news instead of hearsay.

I'm kinda over the Longshot already

Honestly my enthusiasm's died down a fair bit too now that we've got a clip that basically just sounds like more 2012 Green Day. I was never expecting them to sound like the Insomniac sequel I really want but it is kinda disheartening to hear the new project turn back the clock to the band's weakest work.

I don't think it sounds particularly 2012-like. It's just generally new Green Day like, which is basically what it is (ie songs Billie's written recently, just without bass from Mike or drums from Tre). The sound of the trilogy and Rev Rad isn't that different so I couldn't say the clips sound more like one or the other.

Billie’s always been a huge power pop fan and since 2012 that’s pretty much been his sound. The Coverups paid tribute to a lot of his favorites too so it’s no surprise that’s where his heads at right now. Can’t really love Green Day if you don’t love power pop I think, the influence is always there to some degree.

I'm kinda losing interest in the Longshot now too, but that's not because of the way the clips sound or if they sound like the trilogy, it's mainly because I feel like he's dragging it on too long now. Plus, we still barely know anything about it, everything is just way too confusing, and I want clarity dammit!

Has getting accepted been anticlimactic? 😕

No because I didn't expect being accepted to be any different to not being accepted (aside from the thought of Billie actually noticing me when he accepted:happy:) considering we were all getting to see the posts anyway, so there's nothing to be disappointed about. So the reason I'm losing interest is purely because it's been going on too long for me, regardless of whether I had been accepted or not.

My god there’s literally tons of threads on this forum about other artists/bands 🙄 anyways I really dislike the characters in 21CB and don’t like how they’re featured in the videos. I like the songs involving them, but after AI the last thing I wanted was more characters.

I'll admit, I'm a little bitter about the whole instagram thing and not getting accepted, but also I haven't been wowed by any of the clips so far. There's stuff that I thought was good, and I'm sure I'll like the project, but I doubt I'll love it. I actually liked the trilogy aside from a lot of the lyrical content, so I don't mind if he does stuff like that as a side project, especially if it's to get it out of his system so it's not the next green day album, but I feel like these songs are lacking energy so far. I mean, I WANT to like it, but yeah, for all the teasing he's done so far with no payoff yet, I'm losing interest. with revrad the teasing was a little more subtle and I had fun with the speculation, but I think this is a little out of hand

Those were the days... some of the cruelest most nerve-racking teasing they’ve ever done haha

I agree with that, but as for the rest, I'm on the contrary getting more excited every day. Every new little stuff adds to it. From this morning (where I am), the entire Love is For Losers song is pure happiness, and I feel so much like that in my outside-Green Day life, so...

I said it somewhere on the forum last year when the RevRad tour had just ended, just before we got Back The USA: it would be my first time actually waiting for something new from GD or Billie (I saw RevRad coming out less than 2 months after discovering the band, I wasn't exactly waiting for it), and I must say I have tried to imagine what it must've been on here each time Green Day released a new album, or even more when they announced tour dates. It must've been total craziness.

Although I wasn’t here at that time, to be fair the five year wait for 21CB wasn’t an empty silent one. Since 2004 there was the AI tour and all the associated awards and promotions and specials. Then came The Hot Tubs album, tour and all that craziness. So not a lot of downtime really between 2004 and 2009.  So similar to now, where since 2016 there was the RevRad tour, a new song and video, a Greatest hits release, a covers band side project and now a second original aide project and album and who knows what all else until the next GD album.  We’re almost half way through 2018 but there has never been a dull moment.

I didn't like American Idiot when it came out, so I lost interest in Green Day for a while. there was a great underground pop-punk scene at the time too so I had plenty of great music to listen to. I did come around on AI though, I like it a lot now

Funny same here for some reason other than JoS and Boulevard I didn’t care for AI I felt mad for pre ordering the AI book edition and wasn’t mad when my ex’s dog ate the book lol I loved 21st as soon as I heard it funny it was maybe 2011-2012 I finally gave AI a listen and for some reason it finally clicked for me

it's weird, 21st actually got me back into green day when it came out. I wasn't following the band super close leading up to the release for it and I still don't care for Know Your Enemy but I liked the album a lot when i heard it... but that changed, I now like AI way better than 21 lol

AI was definitely my least favorite album when I first got really into Green Day.  I didn’t get at first that you really had to hear the album in order to appreciate it. It wasn’t until I did that I got it.  I liked the shorter catchier songs of pre-AI right away, but AI took more work.  Of course I love it all now.

It was pretty empty at times, for 2 years through 2006 and 2007 all they did was The Saints Are Coming, Working Class Hero and The Simpsons movie. And this with no social media whatsoever so there'd be months on end when you'd hear/see literally nothing from them, and when there was finally a small interview about how the new album was going it was bleak and negative. Having got into them in 2005 it was tough , I was sooooo happy for FBHT. And even after that there was another year of nothing. We're totally spoilt now.

I find it interesting some of you saying that you haven't got fully into AI just when it come out. I wasn't a fan yet at that time, but when I discovered Green Day in August 2016, I first checked out bits of AI and 21st CB on Internet (the 21 Guns clip being the first thing I ever saw of Green Day). In September, I began to watch random live footage every day and at the end of that month I found out they were currently starting to play gigs for a new album that was coming out. So I bought RevRad on early October which was my very first album. After that I bought the rest of the albums pretty much backwards: the trilogy, 21st CB, AI, Warning, and all the previous ones.

And I remember clearly that 21st CB is the album I got the most quickly into. It's still in my top 3 of GD albums but I loved the whole of it from the first listen. While it took me a bit more time with RevRad, even more with the trilogy, and even more with AI. There's a common point between RevRad and AI for me, it's that during the RevRad tour, a fair amount of songs of both albums were played, and for most of them, they were the songs I needed to hear live to really get to love them; essentially: American Idiot, Jesus of Suburbia, Boulevard of Broken Dreams for AI; Still Breathing, Forever Now and Ordinary World for RevRad. These are songs I find so much better live. While a lot of songs on 21st CB and the trilogy were very little played lived and I got to love them quite only for their album versions.

So as far as I'm concerned, even though there are so many songs I would love to see live or live footage of, I find Green Day to make pretty good choices of which songs ought to be played live and which songs can be confined to their only album version with that being already good enough :P

Interesting how some of you guys weren’t into AI but did like 21CB. I liked Green Day for years but AI was the first time I called myself a fan, and then I disliked the singles for 21CB so much (at the time, not now) that I wrote them off till Rev Rad came out.

My mom had a copy of Dookie and I remember listening to it in kindergarten and reading along the lyric book and I've loved the band ever since. But I never really knew their entire catalogue until American Idiot came out and I started going backwards (actually there was AOL radio and I would put on the Green Day station and look up the lyrics to each song that came on). But to me AI is a masterpiece of art and I loved it from the first time I heard it. IMO they haven't topped it since and probably never will but I don't care about that. That album is simply genius

That’s how I feel about 21CB.
