Zebahar
I hated the time span where Billie would ALWAYS mention "Stop When the Red Lights Flash." It just never made sense to me, and I literally skip the beginning of Oh Love so I can avoid hearing him sing "Don't stop when the red lights flash" because it is just DUMB. I don't even know how popular that phrase is among GDC so maybe this is actually a popular opinion rather than unpopular

Seriously though, I think the song and lyrics are awesome. The lyrical content can be either taken in context as a throw-back to a simpler time when they were young and had nothing much aside from their love, etc. Or it could be a present day interpretation whereas yeah, they might have a lot of financial resources now and everything they could have ever hoped for materially, but that stuff isn't important to them (which I firmly believe) and there's nothing of importance to him greater than their relationship. Either way, it works well. And as we know, many people who are successful and do well (and even incredibly well) financially don't really put too much stock in their net worth or whether they're worth ten, a hundred, or several hundred million- their relationships and legacy are far more self- defining attributes. And I firmly believe Billie is in this category. Yes, for many high net worth individuals, total net worth is a defining characteristic, but I honestly think that for the guys in Green Day (like many others), it's not a top priority. I'm not mentioning this because I thought you believed otherwise, I'm just throwing it out there because I think it's worth mentioning.

It just never made sense to me, and I literally skip the beginning of Oh Love so I can avoid hearing him sing "Don't stop when the red lights flash" because it is just DUMB. I actually think it's a very interesting line in the context of the trilogy-era and the sad time that followed it. I always think of it as a kind of theme because they repeatedly use it on the trilogy (Oh Love, Stop When the Red Lights Flash and Dirty Rotten Batards). So retrospectively, for me it could mean that Billie probably knew he was pushing himself too far, he knew that things started to get out of control, he "saw the red lights flash", but he kept himself pushing. Many trilogy songs are very personal and deal with Billie's problems at that time, but I think they are also full of metaphors and not meant to be taken literally (Nightlife is another good example for the extensive use of metaphors). So I don't know, maybe I'm completely wrong, but I always found the thought interesting, and while I agree that some trilogy lyrics are cringeworthy for various reasons, I don't think they - and especially the red lights-line - are dumb.

And I definitely don't understand why it'd bother you so much that you'd feel the need to skip the beginning of Oh Love just so you wouldn't have to hear that line. I think it's a pretty interesting line tbh.

Popular Post Jollyroger118
I actually like the red light lyrics in the trilogy. Oh love:"don't stop when the red lights flash" sounds like he's giving himself permission Stop when the red lights flash: literally the name.of the song like its a warning and shits about to get real grim but he s6ill won't chill out Dirty rotten bastards:"dust to dust when the red light flashes" it's too late and he's dust now I think the whole trilogy is a big metaphor for his addiction which if he's anything like me has probably been a struggle his whole adult life. In that regard I think the trilogys really cool but it should've been cut in at least half if not more cause its not even affective with thst many songs it's just a big incoherent mess

This poor beat down schlub making minimum wage at a hardware store playing his little song and trying to send a message to the one he loves, and having her brush it off and pay no attention..meanwhile the actual actor is a rock legend with millions of adoring fans who would kill for a private session like that. And that's a scene where he pulls of the character convincingly well nonetheless...that to me is interesting stuff and pretty amusing in many respects. Good call WhiteTim and Hermione.
