I love JoS. I still remember the first time I saw that live video of it in Awesome As Fuck, it was one of the reasons I started falling for Green Day.

Forever Now is incredibly overrated. Comparing the lyrics to JOS, they are mediocre and nonsensical. JOS is best song Green Day has ever written. Every line is so clever and meaningful.

I agree there, lyrically it's much better. I don't know about best Billie's ever written but I'd put it up there. It is an awesome song on the album and live because of the emotion and how well it was put together. Right now Forever Now is just so much fresher in everyone's heads so it's getting some worthwhile credit, which is great! JOS will always be that unreplaceable epic masterpiece GD keeps near the end of the show, except for club and bar gigs. I can see them dropping it for a tour but, I'll never see it gone for long and it will feel like something is missing in the regular set without it. Here's a question, what would you rather see gone for a while? JOS? or St. Jimmy and Are We The Waiting?

Or Holiday and Boulevard?

I wouldn't mind in the slightest if they dropped it from the setlist. It's a great song, like most Green Day songs are, but it's far from my favourite, even on the setlist. I actually was expecting AWTW/St Jimmy to be dropped but was pleasantly surprised when they played it. I dunno if it's a popular opinion or not but I adore Are We The Waiting. 

Also I'd be gutted if they cut Holiday and BOBD. Those two songs were my introduction to GD (on the music channels, BOBD was everywhere and Holiday had just been released.) They mean a lot to me.

I love St. Jimmy and We Are the Waiting too. I'll be so happy if they play those. I also hope, and think they'll probably still play Holiday and BOBD. I'm excited about that because those are 2 of my favorite songs on AI.

JOS is cool live, not least because of how into it the band and crowd is, but really all they do is play it . Nothing wrong with that but a song as long as that just played straight through will never be one of my favourites. There's so many AI songs on the setlist and for me it's probably the least entertaining of them so I wouldn't mind it going at all.

I much prefer Forever Now (and the even better Somewhere Now) to JOS. JOS is an epic coming of age story perfectly told in five parts so I can't fault it and can see why it's so well liked, but I'm not attached to it emotionally like Forever Now/Somewhere Now. Even though JOS is written from personal experience the fact it's told through characters and is based on experiences way in the past means it'll always be slightly detached, whereas Forever Now is directly, currently, purely personal. JOS is a dramatic story and relatable in a universal "everyone who's been a teenager can relate to it" way, but for me that doesn't compare to FN/SN's deeply honest and emotional stripped down lyrics that couldn't be more personal. They're completely different really so I don't know if you could say which is "better" but I definitely like Forever Now more.

Don't hate me, but I agree.  JOS is an amazing song, I just don't think it is as epic as its reputation.  I really can't add anything to what Hermione said.  She described my feelings about the song perfectly.

Just think, if they removed it from the set list, they can fit in 3 Insomniac songs.

It's definitely epic for Green Day. Just doesn't seem so as much anymore since we've all heard it two billion times. I still feel it most of the time. Just think too, if they wanted to work 6 fast minutes extra each night, they could play 3 Insomniac songs. Or 1 within' two minutes, and we'd be happy.

That's all good if the lyrics of FN weren't mediocre. I mean, you talk about how JOS is describing how every has felt as a teenager, FN goes over board with the edginess. "I want a better way to die", I feel that's a line that should be written by a 16 year old. And the wanting to start a revolution and rebelling part of Green Day is so overdone now. It's at the point where it's annoying. It's really a big complaint I have with this album and this song. I don't think it feel personal, it feels forced

I understand what your saying there. I love those lines though, more and more by the day. I guess everybody takes different things from the lyrics. Without doubt, JOS has more meaning and is better put together. These are not the same songs at all, how did they start to even be compared? They are both long I guess.

Lol that's like my favourite line in FN

When it comes to how a song makes you feel, it doesn't matter the quality of lyrics. I think the FN lyrics are brilliant though so *shrugs*

I thought, therefore I was now I can't really figure it out.

Such a brilliant way of showing confusion and doubt.  I love the way Hermione described FN, that it feels so much more personal.

Thanks! I struggled to describe it fully because I kept coming back to the word personal, I guess it sums it up.

And wow yes, pretty impressive to be taking on Descartes at all and it's a really clever twist on the quote. I tend to forget about it because it isn't sung that clearly , but really good.

FN isn't overplayed, that's why I prefer it over JOS atm. I don't remember the last time I willingly listened to JOS.

Is it allowed to love JOS and Forever Now likewise? I don't think it's possible to say which one is "better" because they are totally different. Some of you already pointed that out and I agree 100%. JOS is definitely one of the best songs they've ever made in terms of storytelling: When I hear JOS I always see the story like a movie in my head, it's like immerging into the world of the Jesus of Suburbia, watching him, feeling with him.

Listening to Forever Now and Somewhere Now (which I also kind of see as one song), on the other hand, is like immerging into Billie's world, it's like reading his biography. Many GD songs are autobiographical, I know, but none of them has ever been so plain and so honest ("My name is Billie and I'm freaking out!"). Billie isn't hiding behind an alter ego here, he's telling us his story himself. That is a big difference and takes a lot of courage.

I think both JOS and FN/SN have some of the greatest Green Day lyrics we've ever gotten.

That's true, and I usually prefer live songs with a higher "entertainment factor", too, but I think JOS doesn't need that. It's so great that it stands for its own. Seeing it live almost feels like some religious or spiritual experience for me; it feels so heavy and important that it doesn't need any fireworks or speeches, the interruption would probably even ruin it. It'll always be one of my (live) favourites.
