Yeah it's sappy, but it still made me melt when I heard him sing it live :P

That motherfucker has a way of doing that :P tbh he could probably sing Ass and Titties and make me swoon.

Yeah, I would excuse a bad song if he played it in front of me but I don't think I'll ever voluntarily listen to a recording of WIT.

Most of their songs are better live imo.

I prefer When It's Time to Last Night On Earth by quite a bit.

I like both songs, but I agree with this.

I prefer a root canal to WIT.

Sounds about right, as far as ranking them by worst to best. I think Last Night On Earth is way better than WIT, see I don't even want to spell it out.

Here's my opinion: Green Day fans go crazy for sappy/poppy Green Day songs because they like Green Day the best when they make Top 40 music. I think people who like "Still Breathing" or "When It's Time" etc really just like pop/Top 40 music and also happen to like Green Day. TLDR: People want Green Day to be a pop band but won't admit it because it's cooler to like a punk band.

Well, I guess it's a very unpopular opinion that I like When It's Time, then...? :P I don't think it's their best love song by any means, but I like it. It's what it is and works well as part of the AI musical. It perhaps would have sounded less sappy if it had been recorded when Billie wrote it and not more recently.

And I don't think it has anything to do with genre  I like some cheesy pop but I also like some rap rock and metal. It's just personal taste and how each individual relates (or doesn't relate) to the lyrics, etc.

First time I heard When It's Time was when I saw them do it live at the LCCC in 2010. Totally killed my buzz, it's so boring.

What makes it sappy are the lyrics. I'm afraid they don't get much better even if I try to cut him some slack (cause he was young and in love and all that jazz :D ) I can tolerate sappy old songs mainly because they are forgotten: e.g. 1000 Hours.

i like 'when it's time' as well, but i prefer the live version. i think maybe it would have sounded better if it was just an acoustic song?
who knows.. but i like it. haha.

I know, I was just wondering if people wouldn't feel as strongly if it was at least on the same album as 1000 Hours :P

I don't hate that song either, though. Is that an unpopular opinion too? Not sure but I know Billie doesn't like it

Idk, can't speak for anyone else but I'd be happy if they were an unknown band - they would play intimate shows and I'd spare the hassle buying tickets. Besides it would be way cooler to be a fan of a great unknown band than of a top 40 artist. I wish them nothing but success, however, I would be happy if they were out of the public eye - which they pretty much are in my social group anyway. None of my friends know about revrad.

into Green Day so I was really looking forward to it. The disappointment was crushing. Unbearably poseurish and the characters are hateable.

I agree with both people you quoted, does that mean I'm a cunt too?

I really wish they'd stop playing so many of the same songs on multiple tours. Dookie is great and American Idiot will always be one of my favorite albums, but I can look up one of the 1000+ live videos on youtube if I want to hear them live. Play the new shit that you haven't played yet and the old shit that you haven't played in years. :P

I mean Top 40 in regards to their sound, not their popularity.

disagree.
i like both of those songs, but i don't really like or listen to pop/top 40 music and "also happen" to like green day.
i sort of consider green day to be pop punk, not pop or true punk - and that's okay.
they could fall under whatever genre there is, and i'd still like all of their music. not just their "top-40-sounding-music-hits".

Such eloquence. FYI calling people names for disagreeing about a song is frowned upon here, if you throw a personal insult at someone like that again you'll be suspended.

I think it's difficult to make sweeping statements like that though  Sure, some people who like those songs are probably frequent Top 40 radio listeners and enjoy that music, but I don't really think music is consumed that way anymore. It's becoming less and less common to find young people drawing lines in the sand and sticking by their guns as only pop or rock or metal fans. I can enjoy a Taylor Swift album just as much as a Marilyn Manson album

I think GD has explored many styles throughout their career, and most people can't identify by all of them. Take AI for an example. The album had 6 singles on the top 20, and had a variety of solid, non-filler tracks. 21st, by comparison, had more experimental songs but didn't have any chart busters (21 Guns wasn't as popular as BoBD or September). A lot of people from the AI ship jumped, some stayed, and a few joined.

Take this scenario, and compare it to all of GD's eras. SB is kind of reminiscent to BoBD, so casual listeners from AI era may adore the song and revisit the band; while, those who do not like AI era may not like SB.

That being said, it's foolish to entirely blame GD's declining popularity on their age and rock's current status. GD can't emulate their peak periods as seen with 21st Century Breakdown. They can continue to explore other directions, and hope that they find a new "sweet spot". In the end, if a GD album is as good as people say it is on here then the band will regain a lot of appeal. I think this website glorifies and overhypes the public's reception to GD's new albums.
