Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

Just when the people talk, the video itself and what's happening during the song is fine. Why must the characters in the video say anything, it is pretty obvious what is going on just based on the lyrics.

Everyone seems to love the song Brutal Love... Except me. There, I said it. Please don't hate me for my very unpopular opinion!

Not gonna hate you for that but would you mind elaborating?

You know how sometimes when you hear a song you have an immediate reaction? You either love it, hate it, or feel kind of indifferent. Of course there are various degrees of those feelings. For me, Brutal Love is just a song - it's not one that I hate, but I definitely don't love it either. It's not a song that made me think "wow, I love this" the first time I heard it. The lyrics are intriguing, but I just don't really like the way it sounds very much. Something about it kind of reminds me of something you might hear on an oldies radio station, like the 50s kind of oldies. I don't skip it, but it doesn't grab my attention and make me stop and listen or turn up the volume. It's just not a favorite of mine.

I mean, I don't care for it either tbh. I just...tend to not have the patience for slow GD songs. 21 Guns? Skip. Forgotten? Skip. Rest, No One Knows, and hell, even September most of the time. Brutal Love is in that bunch too.

The only exception to this rule is Ordinary World. And maybe Good Riddance.

I remember watching the midnight launch of the JOS video on Channel Four when I was 13… Good god that was a disappointment.

I do really like Good Riddance - it's a classic, and I love Outlaws. I'm not yet loving Ordinary World, but I completely agree with you about the others you mentioned.

Some of you guys seem to want a lyrical masterpiece out of him in every single song he writes, and I find that a little ridiculous  Youngblood obviously was never meant to be anything more than a fun and catchy throwback to when he was first pursuing Adrienne, looking on it now with a sense of fondness. It paints such a cute picture of young/insecure Billie falling in love with this woman who exudes confidence in herself, and how much that appeals to him.

That's exactly how I see the Trilogy. They wrote AI, world loves it. They tried to top it with 21CB, didn't work out as well. I feel like they just said "fuck it" and started having fun with writing again rather than trying to outdo what they did before.

Does that mean they needed to release all three albums worth of songs? Nah, they definitely could have cut a few out and it would have been better, but overall I like the Trilogy. It produced a shit ton of new favorites for me.

But I still haven't listened to RevRad though lol.

Spoiler

okay so I hate when you open a thread and it goes to the last posts you read bc now I look like a n00b responding to posts from a few pages back that I thought were recent

 I also remember that (only I was 19). It was the first new video to be coming out since I'd got into Green Day so I was really looking forward to it. The disappointment was crushing. Unbearably poseurish and the characters are hateable.

You're not! Could be the most beloved trilogy song.

It's not, it allows for interesting discussion about songs, different viewpoints, that kind of thing.

Unless it's Seagull :P

I don't know... I know that's the purpose of the thread but I rarely see any interesting discussions.

I don't know  I listened to the singles but just haven't gotten around to listening the full album. I just haven't been listening to much music lately. When I do it's usually because I'm high and even then I listen to the same few songs over and over. It'll happen soon!

Okat I'll rephrase that, it's one of my favourites.  it makes me pretty emotional when I listen to it and I think it's a genuine, heartfelt love song. I know billie adores adrienne  and it's sweet. but hey I'm a sappy guy.

It's just an inferior Last Night On Earth to me, it's trying way too hard.

It's sappy but I don't think it's contrived. He wrote it when he was 19 and lovesick. If he wrote it now it would be different but I think at the time it was heartfelt, like with other early love songs I find it's the honest and unashamed baring of his sappy feelings that gives it its charm. It's interesting to hear one of those songs sung by an older Billie with high quality production too. I don't think it's one of their best tracks but I think it's a good love song, more like the original/prequel to Last Night On Earth than an inferior one.
