Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

I do think 21CB pales slightly in comparison to AI, but that's not to say that it's a sucky album. Sure it doesn't have a clearer linear storyline like AI, but I think the concept still works, even if it seems between the lines that the band was trying to replicate what they did in AI. The only real gripe I have with 21CB is pretty much on the technical side of things: the thing being somewhat kinda overproduced - Billie's voice sounding kinda filtered or something.

Yeah 21CB certainly pales, because AI was a fucking masterpiece, one of the defining albums of the 2000s.

Billie has been using filters since Nimrod/Warning (and really every album as any album with vocals has some kind of filters used during the mixing and master phrase)

but on 21st the filter was supposed to be appearent

if if you listen to the AI Acapellas you'll hear the same filters that was used on 21st

It pales but not because AI is a "masterpiece" but because it's just that bad. Also AI is full of "try to hard" generic songs with the "oh we hate war" theme all over, not to mention the awful singles like JOS. Wake Me Up When September Ends was the only good song on there.

P.S. Keep in mind that I am a
notorious AI hater on GDC

Besides Holiday, what songs do you classify as anti-war? Also, have you seen the video for WMUWSE? You can't get more anti-war than that. :P

Yes, god forbid a song touches on one of the most impactful and harmful constructs that humanity has, war. I'd much rather hear another love song

Some might argue that describes love too :P

They should probably be writing about "Enlightenment" then.

How about Tre getting inside that?

None of the songs (except Holiday) were anti war, at all. I would agree most have a political theme to go along with the JOS narrative (which is very good imo), they're not anti war. I don't understand, what did you want the album to be like? Dookie was 10 years ago at this point. Billie Joe was older, Green Day was older. They weren't able to make a song like Longview anymore cause that's not who they were anymore. Also, 2004 was a much different America than 1994. America was still reeling from 9/11. They had to make an album to define the times like they did with Dookie, and AI very much defined the times. I guess I can't convince you that AI wasn't bad; as you say you're notorious for that opinion. But just my perspective on AI.

P.S. I didn't know there are people that exist that didn't like THE 9 minute masterpiece o_o

Every single time I listen to JOS I think "masterpiece".

Every time I listen to Sweet 16 (never) I think of that guy who said it was better than JOS and how he must be failing at life.

I assume there's probably quite a lot of people out there who are fans of Green Day's earlier work and aren't fans of the grander stadium rock American Idiot/21st CB stuff. It's different so liking one doesn't necessarily mean liking the other. I doubt Seagull's the only one :P. But yeah hearing the reasoning behind the dislike for it would be interesting.
