Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

I know I'm late to the party, but in regards to the whole rhyming "time" with "time" thing in Whatsername: It used to bug me as well until I derived an explanation that revolves around the assumption that Billie Joe did it on purpose. And since then I've actually thought it was kinda cool.

We see throughout the whole narrative that Jesus of Suburbia is a pretty static character. He goes to the city in the hopes of something great, but he manages to fuck everything up anyways. He attempted to get away from his broken home, but all he did was create another one. This of course results in him returning home with nothing really but a few memories. Character-wise, nothing really changed. So with Billie Joe rhyming "time" with "time", it symbolically displays that. Ending the last 2 verses on the same word shows that throughout Jesus of Suburbia's journey he never took the final step to reinvent himself. He stays the same, just like the word. Also, it's important that "time" is the word that is rhymed with itself. Like what? A year went by and did he really learn anything? "Time" hasn't changed for him. Jesus of Suburbia's character says the same: just like the final rhyme.

Of course, it's very far fetched and Billie Joe probably didn't give it that much thought. He probably just got tired of thinking of words that rhyme with "time". But hey, it's fun to think about. It certainly makes the mediocre rhyme that ends one of the best albums a bit more bearable.

That's pretty damn good.

- Love American Idiot and agree with their politics but some of the lyrics are cringey

- Their appearance/image from the American Idiot era is embarrassing.

- EDIT: Some of Bullet in a Bible is the band jerking themselves off for an hour. Great concert but a bit arrogant at times.

-American Idiot lyrics are cringey but the lyrics on the trilogy aren't? Had me rollin with that one

-Embarrassing because? It sold them albums, and was part of their revival/

-I think you're mistaking confidence for arrogance. They're rockstars, the biggest band in the world at this point in time. That swagger was part of their revival as well, and they earned it.

I think that regardless of the whole rhyming "time" with "time" bit, the last lines of Whatsername are incredibly powerful, and I wouldn't have them any other way

- The trilogy is far more superior than 21st Century Breakdown.

- 21CB is a tough listen, too serious and bloated.

- Cigarettes and Valentines and Money Money 2020 have NOTHING to do with each other.

- The song "Cigarettes and Valentines" was never actually a song. I'm guessing it was written quickly on the 21CB tour.

- Stop Drop and Roll was the album they really wanted to make instead of 21CB.

WTF? Where did this tirade come from? I'm not even sure where to start with commenting.

I don't understand why that bugs people. I agree it's a very powerful lyric and it gives the song a sad note at the end. It's like missing her, regret and letting her go all at the same time. It's also the perfect ending to the AI musical IMO.

Well at least these are really unpopular opinions. I think this thread needs something like that sometimes  The theory about CIgarettes and Valentines is intriguing though, do we have any proof the song was actually written in 2003?

Oh, "American Idiot" and "cringey" simply cannot be in the same sentence by the way.

It seems you have neglected this part of FOD:

When it's all said and done

It's real and it's been fun

But was it all REAL fun

Yes, but FOD isn't Whatsername. Whatsername is in a class by itself, despite the bad rhyming. It works in that song.

I always rather liked those lines. I think they're clever :P

In FOD I used to hear "When it's all said and done, t's real and it's been fun, but was it all real mud," and thought it was a Woodstock reference. I wasn't up on my Green Day timeline at the time

Not every lyric or poem needs to rhyme. Sometimes it's more of what the person is trying to say than how they are saying it. I write poetry and most of what I write doesn't rhyme. It's more about the emotions. Not that I'm an expert or anything but I'm just saying.

I think their best album is pretty good

I didn't like their first album, American Idiot, because they stole The White Stripes' colour scheme ):

I don't like the AI image either. It helped to draw attention, though

Did you not like the red and black color scheme or the black hair and guyliner or both? Because Billie wore some red and black as early as 94.
