Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

Nah i can't find it! I know someone will find it for you I'm sure he said it!

So you consider Makeout Party, Nightlife, Fuck Time, Stop When The Red Lights Flash and Lady Cobra as good written songs? Just answer me that. And don't give me no "they're fun songs" bullshit cause they have written fan songs in the past and they were great. I think Billie as a writer is too good for his fans to not bash him about songs like these.

And what aspect are we considering when deciding whether the song is well written or not? Are you on about the lyrics or the melodies?

Wow, talk about tl;dr

I just wish Fuck Time wasn't a cut and paste copy of Fire by Jimi Hendrix. It's not a bad song but the Hendrix song is far better and I can't listen to Fuck Time without thinking of it.

Since we were talking about lyrics in the trilogy, My absolute least favorite line in DRB is "What the fuck does ok stand for"

Its the most out of place line in the whole damn thing

It raises a good point though. What the fuck does OK stand for?

Fuck Time

You are so wrong on this one. I am at the same stage of family life as Billie and this song hits home so much. Billie has always written about things that mean something to him. Most of the time, they can transcend generations. This is a song that you are not going to get unless you are in the same stage as he is. I get it, I get it alot. Something that may be senseless to you, may really mean alot to someone else because they get where the lyricist is coming from.

Everyone sees things differently, no interpretation is ever fact its always someones opinion.

If you understand it so well, then why don't you explain it to the rest of the class?

No, there is actually a HUGE problem with many people's lack of interpretation and will to read between the lines to understand the lyrics. I know for sure that somewhere in this forum there was a thread dedicated to analyzing the lyrics, and I specifically remember people talking about the Kool-Aid fraud, and how many people who joined some kind of sect got poisoned.

Can't link you know, but if you're actually curious enough to try and understand the actual meaning.

Edit: I think this is the post.http://www.greendaycommunity.org/topic/94124-lyrics-that-still-make-no-sense-to-you/page-2#entry5356910

I don't see it as having a lack of interpretation. I'm TOTALLY fine with the "Jesus" part. And now I can see how "venus" would SORT OF make sense... Sort of like "What the fuck's she doing?" But why VENUS? Why not think of some other word that rhymes with "Jesus"? Even if they couldn't, it's totally possible to just cut "Jesus" from the song and put something else in. But hey, they didn't.

And, the "Kool-Aid" thing. What if someone didn't know about the whole "Drinking the Kool-Aid" story? I sure didn't, and I'm sure a lot of other people didn't.

Oh, and "the Kool-Aid fraud" is the best way you could've worded that.

And this song is 4 minutes. When I was halfway through it I thought it was going to end around there. I just it lasts WAY too long.

Fuck Time is a crass, lazily written song about sex. It's dumb, and it's fun. It's a decent FBH song (although every other one of their songs has far better lyrics), but it's a fucking awful Green Day song, and has no place in their back catalogue. I don't know what they were thinking putting it on a GD album, even one with Makeout Party (that can get fucked too) on it.

Also they completely stole it off Hendrix but I'm still not sure if that was intentional or not.

I came in here ready to rabidly disagree with you, but then this is the post that i read...which I agree with. I'm sure I will have other opportunities to ridicule your opinions :P

I look forward to it

Sometimes, you just have to forget about lyrics and enjoy the tune. Look Blur. "Song 2" is about "woohoo" only.

Even if he could, we wouldn't understand it because he is in that stage of family life as Billie, and you could understand it only if you're in that stage.

What's wrong with Venus? I honestly can't understand. Also, it's not Billie's fault if you're too lazy to visit google.com and type "drinking the kool-aid meaning" in. At least that's what I did, and I've never had such a big problem with that line.

Well, length is one thing, interpretation is what I'm about. I didn't know the story either, but not knowing is a petty excuse. We could all just stay ignorant and apathetic (don't know don't care), but that would be completely ridiculous.

That's a fucking lazy load of bullshit excuse. Billie Joe has always written songs that anyone can identify with, hence him selling millions of records and having fans that span almost 3 generations. If we have to be at a certain point in our lives to "get it" or otherwise the song is shit, then the song is just plain shit.

And it's all the more ridiculous when you're talking about Fuck Time. The title says it all. It's hardly the fucking Da Vinci Code.

There's always a certain crowd that a song appeals/is understandable to. Just because this song has a significantly smaller crowd, it doesn't mean that the song is bullcrap. Not necessarily anyone could identify with the whole concept of American Idiot, even. It includes failing and coming back home again empty handed. Some people that recklessly left home in their youth not necessarily became burnouts, they might have turned out to be incredibly successful, and this is the point where even the most universal concept from Green Day fails to apply to anyone and everyone.

So what you're saying is that there can never be a shit song because someone, somewhere might like it. That's complete bollocks.

Well, if we're talking about interpretation, I honestly just interpreted as lazy song writing. But I guess you're right about that. I honestly can't think of anything right now to argue against that.

Guess you could say I was "drinking the Kool-Aid".

Well I already said I didn't like about them putting in "venus". In my opinion, I don't think I should have to look up part of the lyrics to a song to find out if there's some meaning behind one line.

Now that I think about it, what's the random "Hello" in the song for?
