Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

My opinions on most of Green Day's work has fluctuated. I used to hate 21CB (formerly known as 21st Century Letdown), and hated on it to the point of many warnings from mods. Then I started living it early this summer, now I'm neutral on it. Insomniac used to be my second favorite GD album, now I'm not sure. But I have always loved AI always disliked Warning.

How in the world did your hate for 21CB make you get warnings?

Yes, I can.

It's pretty much what boy bands' fangirls do.

Being dogmatic about it, mainly :P

Something like Seagull with American Idiot?

Yeah I firmly believed it was a fact.

98% of the problem with the trilogy is the lyrics for me.

Yeah a lot has to do with that. Just not many songs that have anything to say, really.

What does Billie's weight have to do with anything?

Well I can't necessarily speak to what she was saying, but if you were a fan during the Warning era and the band releases a flop of an album that sounds nothing like the GD you grew up with then I would say Billie's being out of shape would be an indication that they were at the end of the road. Not the weight on it's own, obviously, but the whole image revamp that came with AI was important

Chris Burney looked like this when Bowling For Soup released their best album:

Fair, but he may pull off being fat better than Billie can

Is that a thing? Being able to pull of being fat? It is now

Warning isn't that great an album. It's ok, but I guess it's not my type of music.

Well maybe it is harder if you've been skinny for most of their life

But of course, I may personally value lyrics too much, but to me Warning is lyrically their best album. Kerplunk or Warning. Kerplunk probably is that important to me because I can relate to it, but really, whilst that young, not every songwriter writes songs with topics like that. I mean, even some of those love songs are kinda sophisticated.

Of course, there are lightweight songs too, but with the exception of Dominated Love Slave, do work, partly because of that youthful energy.

But it is funny how a remarkable songwriter who was able to write songs about many other topics than merely girls/partying, even whilst that young, suddenly starts to write lyrics like those on the Trilogy, when in his forties, starts to write songz merely just about that, and also in a kinda derivative way.

So whilts the music on the Trilogy is fairly good, additionally great, the lyrics do not appeal to me. Especially considering by whom they were written. A songwriter who in the past has mastered the ability of writing both great and honest personal lyrics and fairly straightforward but still not banal political lyrics (one or two songs on 21st Century Breakdown are lyrically a bit banal, but not too much.)

Thats why Warning is my favourite. Musically its an atypical Green Day record, but lyrically it is a mix between the later Green Day and the earlier one (s).

My unpopular opinion: The trilogy isn't as bad as people say it is.

It's not Green Days best by any means, but I think people hate on it too much. I think people were expecting another Dookie or AI, and obviously the albums fell short.

I don't hate Uno, Dos, or Tre, but they aren't my favorite either. They aren't my favorite becuase I feel like they tried to shove different styles of music down my throat, and the songs don't sound connected due to all the experimentation.

Maybe people hate it so much because of that, but I don't think that's a reason to DESPISE it...

Same here!

Yeah :D. Seriously though I hope people don't really let other's opinions spoil their enjoyment of songs/albums too much. If you're lucky enough to like a song and someone else isn't you're the winner in that situation and they're the loser since you get to enjoy a song and they don't! So just enjoy it.

I get what your saying, although I think it was more about the whole band being pretty scruffy and unhealthy all round rather than just Billie's weight (he was only a bit chubby anyway). The band themselves have talked about it, Billie saying how during Nimrod/Warning he was drunk all the time and in his "fat Elvis period", and Mike using the same phrase to describe the whole band and saying they all looked like shit and had lost motivation. And Billie mentioned the reason for the image change being wanting to "look like a fucking man for once". I think getting more in shape and looking sharp with AI came from the band members becoming more energized and motivated etc at that time, and just maturing, as well as it fitting with the music.

Speaking of the Trilogy, I don't think that DRB is that good of a song...

It's really not. It's by no means their worst and I like it well enough, but it's really just "epic" for the sake of being epic and it isn't as natural as JOS or Homecoming in that respect. During the 99 Revs tour everyone was freaking out that they weren't playing it and I never got that sad about it :ninja:

And let me note that GDC/this thread didn't make me hate songs I loved ... it's just that it helped put my indifference into words.
