Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

Warning is like Insomniac for me - not bad, but I've never really been able to get into it. Warning does have Misery though.

I'm almost certain I read in an interview that it was about an Italian guy who was so good at fashion they had to shoot him.

Oh no wait, I'm getting interviews confused with episodes of Father Ted.

Billie said he saw Tre wearing a t shirt that had "fashion victim" and bullet holes on it right after Gianni Versace was murdered and it caught his attention because it was such an extreme statement, and made him want to write a song called Fashion Victim. The lyrics aren't about Versace though, aside from the reference in that one phrase.

And honestly, your top five list makes my top five list of your top five lists.

Is there some sort of banner for this?

rest

I'd actually put the opening of JOS up there, it's an odd one though because it sounds so much better when isolated it's unreal.

Prove it.

Same. I used to like it, but I just think it's boring now.

I hope no one murders me for this.

That's awesome. The "I don't care, if you don't care" reminds me a lot of Billie's accent more prominent in the 90s. The "I sound like an Englishman impersonating an American impersonating an Englishman."

Hah, I didn't realize what thread I was in and thought this was a general statement not related to Green Day.

HAH i wish that was the case

My favourite bit is the first verse, it seems more full of vitriol in isolation for some reason. I also love how prominent the harmonies are, it really shows off how important they are to the song.

Those voice effects bother me.

Those voice effects are on all through the entire album.

They sound fine with other instruments.

The whole echoing thing sounds weird when it's isolated. But this did remind me of how much I love the sound of Billie's voice on AI. Prob my favourite album when it purely comes down to the sound of his voice. Esp on 21stCB (and on the Trilogy) he started singing in a different way, and I don't like that sound as much as I like his voice on AI. And also previous albums, but AI is like his peak.

I guess cos at the time it was one of their most unusual songs. It still is in a way and it has a really cool beat. Also, it tells a story quite clearly, for a change.

They sound fine with other instruments.

It's a bit grating on the isolated vocal tracks, but on the proper album, the thick guitars and other instruments drown it out.

I love Warning. It might not be their best album but it has some of the bands best songs on it (Blood Sex and Booze, Church on Sunday, Waiting, Macy's Day Parade among them) and I love the way Billie's voice sounds. I can see what the band was going for with that record and it's a shame that they never really took that sound any further.

Just like I said before, I think Green Day was at the top of their form around the Nimrod-Warning era (I'd also include AI in here). Musically it might be all over the place as Ceadog said, but I think that type of leeway allows the band to shine more than if they were forcing themselves to stick with one theme.

Totally agree. It seemed deeper and more violent. 21CB was too high for me.

Late to the Warning party, but here's my piece--it's my third-favorite GD album after AI and Nimrod. Production is a bit on the tinny end, but unlike Ceadog I think the songs are a pretty consistent quality (Hold On has grown on me a ton and the vocals save Fashion Victim). I'd actually argue it's more of a clusterfuck than Nimrod in terms of consistent sound (Nimrod sounds pretty even throughout with the exceptions of Last Ride In, Take Back, King for a Day and Good Riddance), but to me consistent sound matters less than consistent quality, which Warning has in spades. It's definitely not your typical Green Day album, and not one I'd show to someone I was trying to get into the band for the first time, but overall it's one of their best.

No one listens to me, but I always say Billie sounds like a chipmunk on parts of the title track. :P

No one listens to you because you're wrong :P The last chorus of The Static Age, on the other hand...

Oh yes.

C'mon, tell me those "working class hee-row!" bits don't sound unnatural.

They do sound touched up but I wouldn't say they're particularly chipmunk like. They've never particularly stood out to me.

you're overthinking this, Graham :P

I'm not thinking about it at all, though; it's always bugged me even before I knew to care about such things.

Im just gonna say it: as much as jason is part of the band I don't consider him a member of Green Day

Warning is just a pleasant album to listen to for me. It's something I can listen to no matter the mood I'm in ... but tbh, I do think its sound is pretty consistent, which is why it's such a playable album. I never really liked to listen to Nimrod in full because it jumps around so much, it's a shuffle album for me.
