Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

While I pretty much despise anything else AI-musical-related, I much prefer the version of 21 Guns that features both Green Day and the AI cast to the studio version.

My first dance is going to be When It's Time, much better than Last Night On Earth.

"So tell me when it's time to say I love you." If you've just got married I would have hoped it'd already happened ;)

Gonna sic Alissa on your ass, nomnom

LNOE is a song that I initially thought I hated, but then I realized that it's quite beautiful; it's a grower. But I think the musical version blows it out of the water.

I wanted to say this but I don't remember what the version on the cast album sounded like. The version that they showed Billie Joe in Broadway Idiot, with the choir-type thing, was phenomenal.

People actually like Last Night On Earth?

Yes. We do. The unabashed sappiness is what does it for me.

But I think the musical version blows it out of the water.

ALL OF THE YES TO THIS. The harmonies (esp. the female harmonies) just take it to another level

When It's Time is way better than Last Night on Earth! I think it's their best love song so far.

i honestly prefer last night on earth to the static age. lnoe isn't a favorite by any standards, but i prefer it. although i think the ai musical version made me enjoy the original more.

why

Because it's just Kidz Bop trying to hide behind "punk?"

Entirely. I haven't actually had chance to see the musical, for all I know it's the best thing in the world. But the cast recording album is just pure cringe from start to finish and I honestly don't understand how people who like the originals like it. It's just the same thing as if One Direction or Bieber or someone covered a Green Day song, if they haven't already.

The only credit I'll give the musical versions is that they made Know Your Enemy slightly more listenable, and the version of 21 Guns is pretty decent, but other than that? No.

ok well i've seen the (original) musical multiple times and i can tell you that it is amazing. i will admit that the studio recordings are less so, but the songs are honestly amazing live. they tend to lose some of the magic when recorded, but that doesn't mean the cast is any less talented or that the musical versions are absolutely trash or "pure cringe". i'm fucking sick of everyone on this forum acting like one direction and justin bieber aren't talented musicians, and throwing "kidz bop" towards anything that doesn't have electric guitars or whatever. this isn't directed towards you specifically but everyone needs to stop being so fucking stuck up. i hate justin bieber as a person but that doesn't mean he isn't talented or that i don't enjoy his music.

I'm with Jill, You HAVE to see the musical to appreciate the album. I despised the musical versions prior to seeing the musical, but once you see it it changes your whole perspective on the album.

What did you guys think when you first heard Avril do that terrible cover of Basket Case? Because to me it's the same thing. I'm not anti anyone who isn't Billie singing Green Day songs, and the new versions are actually a pretty cool concept. I just don't think the vast majority of the singers on the cast recording have suitable voices. I'd like to hear someone like Amy Lee give them a go actually. But as it stands it just feels karaoke, to be brutally honest.

"suitable" meaning...? it's broadway. they're going to have those kinds of voices. they're broadway performers. i don't see how it's at all karaoke.

How is one artist covering a song considered "karaoke" and another artist covering the same song isn't?

I think Restless Heart Syndrome is by far the worst song on 21stCB.

Though I have to admit the ending is pretty epic.

Well some versions are better than others, and admittedly I do quite like the odd one. But take Letterbomb for example. It's just the same as the original except with inferior singers with no edge. Therefore it sounds karaoke. If the song had been arranged differently and made a ballad or something it could have been fantastic. But it's not, so it sounds karaoke and I don't know why people would choose to listen to it over the original.

Because perceived authenticity.

The way I see it the musical versions of the songs do sound like they're supposed to sound - like musical songs. I just happen to hate the way musical songs sound (so horribly melodramatic and cheesy that I cringe every moment I'm listening to them), so I don't like them. Doesn't mean they shouldn't exist or that they're "wrong" in any way or that the performers aren't talented, it's just a style that isn't to my taste.

I agree with you on how it sounds, but that's just how musical singing is as far as I can see. I think they hit the mark as far as making musical versions of the songs, it's just a case of whether you like that kind of song or not.
