Z J
No, wanna = want to. "I don't want to suicide" (where you'd normally say "I don't want to commit suicide) is possibly dodgy grammar or at least slightly odd sounding. But "I don't want a suicide" (as in "I don't want a suicide to occur") is free from any dodginess or oddness. http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/wanna It can mean either. I don't wanna sounds far closer to want a. Perhaps that's why I've thought of it this way. But, it's irrelevant to my opinion
Hermione
http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/wanna It can mean either. I don't wanna sounds far closer to want a. Perhaps that's why I've thought of it this way. But, it's irrelevant to my opinion It's more often want to though, which is why it's listed first in dictionaries. I don't think there's any Green Day song (or many songs in general) that uses wanna to mean want a because it kind of sounds more lazy/childish than wanna meaning want to. "I wanna (want to) be on TV", "I wanna (want to) be sedated" and loads of other examples of wanna = want to in lyrics spring to mind but I actually can't think of any examples of wanna = want a. Unless the lyric is "want a" and it just sounds like "wanna", as in this case. But yeah that's not even why you don't like it so
green day is
Wanna isn't even a proper word guys it's what happens when you talk fast for either of those pairs of words and then recreate it in text. Like "hafta" or "gonna". That's why Oxford has informal on the definition page. Don't mix up your Vernacular English and your Standard English. If ya do yer gonna ennup writin like this. Spike
Speaking of vocal melodies as we were a few pages ago, I think my overall favourite is the chorus of East Jesus Nowhere. The chord shift from A major to C major dropping to B is really unusual, and the atonal nature of the melody (B, C#, D, D#, E) really stands out as something special, especially for the genre. It's a really interesting one on a technical level as there's no tonal centre. It seems ridiculous to say it of Green Day, but in songwriting terms it's actually very reminiscent of Radiohead. grene cniht
I think No One Knows is one of the best songs ever written by Green Day. The bass line is just amazing and the lyrics are so true and emotional to me

Z J
I don't like Geek Stink Breath that much. For as much as I love Insomniac, I'd still only rank it second from the bottom ahead of Tight Wad Hill. It is better live though IMO
AmyxLongview
Sometimes I wish they added more to the songs on Insomniac. I mean, for most of the songs the bridge is just the main chord progression repeated again. For example on Stuart and the Ave, for the bridge they could have had Billie singing another verse over Mike's bassline and then have it bust back into the chorus. But at the same time I get that the a lot of the appeal of Insomniac is in the simplicity of the songs.
green day is
I think the solos on 1039/smooth and Kerplunk are obnoxious. They're fine when you're listening to a couple albums on shuffle or something but listening through and hearing the same blues wank on every track is kinda annoying. Z J
I think the solos on 1039/smooth and Kerplunk are obnoxious. They're fine when you're listening to a couple albums on shuffle or something but listening through and hearing the same blues wank on every track is kinda annoying. Anything from that area I usually judge with the caveat that they are teenagers when writing the songs. Some of them (particularly from Kerplunk) have some neat little tricks/melodies in them and when you consider their age I don't mind that some of them lack a ton of inventiveness. Sometimes I wish they added more to the songs on Insomniac. I mean, for most of the songs the bridge is just the main chord progression repeated again. But at the same time I get that the a lot of the appeal of Insomniac is in the simplicity of the songs. I get what you mean. You're right the appeal is really in the fact that you can just rip through these songs they aren't a chore to listen to. You can listen to the whole album in the blink of an eye but when you break down the songs there are fantastic lyrics buried in all the snarls. Of course Stuart and The Ave being longer always wins in my book
Spike
Personally I love the solos from the first two albums. They may be a little obnoxious, but if you're going to have a solo you may as well have a solo, rather than two notes back and forth a-la Uptight. I love hearing Billie's fret wankery tbh. Maybe that's because I only knew American Idiot and Basket Case for the first few months of being into them and thought he was a mediocre guitarist at the time, so hearing him playing some proper solos was a real treat.
