Z J
Just a little heads up, you might wanna remove that trilogy lyric from your sig. I mean, people might think you like the trilogy, and you wouldn't want that, would you?! The people need to witness the horror that is the trilogy lyrics, one signature at a time. I'll update it

Hermione
For real what's wrong with the Sex Drugs and Violence lyric though? Every word of it makes sense, with multiple thoughtful/intelligent meanings that relate to the song and society (and that have already been explained by many people on here), and it's put in a succinct and catchy way. I don't see the issue with it.
Popular Post walking_c0ntradicti0n
I suggest "hope there's more in your pants than a bus route" for the next one. or "i like your BM-excellent tits with a tattoo of a pig sniffing glue"

green day is
or "i like your BM-excellent tits with a tattoo of a pig sniffing glue" >quoting the intentionally ridiculous song Why do people keep doing this? It's really, really obvious he wasn't going for gold in Troublemaker.

Hermione
Again I don't see what's wrong with that. It's intentionally brash and ridiculous to reflect the brash and ridiculous character who's saying it. And BM-Xcellent tits is some amusingly silly word play. Do you guys think any of the lyrics on any of their other albums are bad? Or sound bad on their own? Because I only ever see out of context trilogy ones posted here. You can do the same with any album, "Magic man, egocentric plastic man", "It seems so frightening, time passes by like lightning", "When he was young did he have dreams of wearing woman's shoes and being crazy?" "I was alone, I was all by myself, no one was looking" "Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone" tee hee. Quoting short out of context lines and saying "that's bad" is just so unconvincing The chorus is horrible. Sounds like a bad kids bop lyric or something. But there's clear meaning behind it, layers of meaning, so it's not like a bad kids bop lyric.
DookieLukie
or "i like your BM-excellent tits with a tattoo of a pig sniffing glue" That lyric flows like a river, though.

People seem to glorify the bad lyrics of the past. 1039 and Kerplunk had some atrocious and sappy lyrics and everyone thinks they are golden. But yeah, your examples are spot-on (except the Chump lyric - I like that line ). BUT I will admit that before the demo versions, the chorus of SD&V and LBNT made me cringe a lot. I'd skip those songs with friends around out so not to embarrass Green Day.

Ok well a few things: 1) simply having a meaning doesn't justify the lyric 2) I like that Chump lyric because he's speaking about this man whom he doesn't even know with such hateful words, it's comical 3) Some of those lyrics were written when they were younger than 20, that's an excuse. There isn't really an excuse now. 4) If you put half of these lyrics in context they make no sense still. And it isn't even always about them not making sense. Lines should be able to stand alone for the most part and not sound absolutely ludicrous like half the trilogy lyrics do. Kids Bop do cover songs so IDK what you even mean by that. Was unaware as I don't listen to them lol. ...sounds like a 10 year old wrote it….better?

I don't really think any of them are bad, I just think it's easy to make a lyric look bad if you post it out of context and just say it's bad/silly/has no meaning. People only seem to like doing it with trilogy lyrics though. Probably doesn't help that the band have hardly talked about the songs at all, I bet if they'd talked about the meanings more this would be less of an issue
Z J
The ratio of bad lyrics to good lyrics is significantly higher than the trilogy than any other albums. Without question. That is why they are hit the hardest. The kerplunk/39smooth lyrics get a pass because they were teenagers.
HARVESTER
sounds like a 10 year old wrote it….better? Kids Bop was not written by 10 year olds, most of the songs on Kids Bop were written for adults, the hatred of Kids Bop deserves some applause, and if a 10 year old was singing the song,"Drama Queen" .... I'd be really worried about the parents for allowing it.

Hermione
So are convoluted retcons that desperately try to explain how the lyrics are good and make sense. Occam's Razor is your friend. I haven't seen any convoluted explanations of (for example) the Sex Drugs and Violence chorus, only ones that accurately explain the clear meanings behind it. But I'd prefer that to the other extreme of simply saying "nope, it has no meaning or value and I'm not going to go into it any further than that", being so dismissive seems a pretty boring way of looking at lyrics. Z J
"Having a meaning doesn't justify the lyric... but I like that lyric because of its meaning. " Miss the "its comical" part? Clockwise
IMO the lyrics on the trilogy are just as good as the lyrics on any GD album, and I find most of them very relatable.

"I was alone, I was all by myself, no one was looking" "Like a liar looking for forgiveness from a stone" tee hee. Quoting short out of context lines and saying "that's bad" is just so unconvincing Maybe it's just that the lyrics on the Trilogy simply aren't as good as those on previous albums, and as such get more criticism? I mean, "Magic man, egocentric plastic man" is quite easily one of the best lines they've ever written and I thought everyone loved it. For what it's worth, I don't like any of the lyrics of Nice Guys Finish Last, and some of my favourite songs have lyrics that I don't particularly like (such as "Drain the pressure from the swelling, this sensation's overwhelming," and some of my favourite lyrics are actually on the Trilogy ("Your thoughts are so unholy in the holiest of holes, onward Christian soldiers filled with jive and mind control," I mean come on!). I've even defended Fuck Time in the past. But overall there's clearly a lower lyrical standard on the Trilogy, and whether you think that's necessarily a bad thing or not, it's just disappointing, especially given the existence of songs like Jesus Of Suburbia where every single line is pure gold. We've come to expect better from Billie after two decades of lyrical brilliance. Personally I don't even count Kerplunk or 1039 because he was just a kid, and while some lyrics on there are great a lot are nothing special, but as a fully developed songwriter who's had his own voice for a long time, the Trilogy is just deflating to listen to. Kids Bop do cover songs so IDK what you even mean by that. Sometimes they change the odd line to something really ridiculous to make a song more suitable for kids. green day is
Miss the "its comical" part? I like it because its comical to me not just simply because it has meaning. Troublemaker's lyrics are comical because they're obviously meant to be silly. Taking a single line out doesn't show that because the whole also 2) I like that Chump lyric because he's speaking about this man whom he doesn't even know with such hateful words, it's comical 4) If you put half of these lyrics in context they make no sense still.
