Anaïs.
It's still his masterpiece even if not one by wider standards As much as I adore the vocals on Breakdown I just think he has an awesome voice in general. Not even necessarily in terms of delivery, just his general singing voice. He was technically at his best on Breakdown but I think the vocals on American Idiot are my favourite. The filters on Breakdown keep it from being my fave; they just make his voice sound too thin. AI is the best mix of technical ability, delivery, and power IMO. If it weren't for the lack of Mike's bass it'd be their best produced in general, I think. Was just listening to Homecoming last night and was saddened at how egregiously quiet Mike was. Despite the fact that AI is their best album, I find myself rarely listening to the songs from it (save Holiday/BOBD, which is on my driving mix). It really is one of those things that's greater than the sum of its parts and needs to be listened to all at once or not at all.
Popular Post Fuzz
I would never go so far as to call anything Billie sings a vocal masterpiece. What's important with him is the delivery, not the technical brilliance. Which is one of the reasons the Trilogy is so bad vocally. I consider Brutal Love to be pretty impressive vocally.

Guest
Then 99% of artists are not creative and lazy. It would be really difficult to find someone that hasn't covered a song and many songs have been covered hundreds of times. I will give you that someone like Michael Buble shows no musical creativity. Besides being total shite 99% of what he does is covers. But doing a cover of a cover is nothing new. I have no problem with covering songs, so long as the people covering them bring something new to the table. That's creative. Foreverly was a copy-paste of a 60 year old album. And besides, I know Billie Joe is capable of better. He was being more creative with covers when he was in his teens with Knowledge. I consider Brutal Love to be pretty impressive vocally. That one note he holds before the breakdown is pretty good. Otherwise you see better on the X Factor every week.

I still say that taking two artists, from absolutely opposite ends of the spectrum and have them record an album in a genre that is not in either ones comfort zone, is pretty damn creative. And it worked. But honestly, I don't listen to it for its creative aspect, but for the gorgeous vocals.

Does not get old Oh, totally agreed, JOS is my favorite song. But it's not one of those things I can listen to whenever, it has to be special. Libertine Angel
Oh, totally agreed, JOS is my favorite song. But it's not one of those things I can listen to whenever, it has to be special. I find it can sometimes be even more powerful when you don't seek it out - if I have all their stuff on shuffle and JOS comes on, the fact that it's unexpected makes it that much better. Popular Post AlissaGoesRAWR
I've said it before but I'll say it again, Brutal Love is SO all-around overrated.
Mayonaise
I've said it before but I'll say it again, Brutal Love is SO all-around overrated. Just out of curiosity, why do you think that? In speaking of overrated Green Day songs, Dirty Rotten Bastards...
AlissaGoesRAWR
Just out of curiosity, why do you think that? The tune is borrowed from another musician. The lyrics make no sense. It's a minute and a half too long. It's boring. It didn't deserve to replace Good Riddance as a set list closer for a majority of the most recent tour, and I'm probably bitter for that, too. Um... Do you need more reasons? I can probably think of some.

Anaïs.
The tune is borrowed from another musician. And the melody of the half that's borrowed is better than the half Billie wrote, which is embarrassing.

I think the lyrics are supposed to represent the elements and event of a relationship. I paraphrase some random thing I read on the internet about this song, "No matter what happens, love will be love."

I paraphrase some random thing I read on the internet about this song, "No matter what happens, love will be love." Even if it is, Billie has done such a great job writing love songs in the past that use simpler phrases, but hold much deeper meaning. Even a song like Paper Lanterns, which he wrote as a teenager, says more to me about unrequited or "brutal" love than Brutal Love does... I just feel like the entire song is too abstract for my liking. I enjoy songs that are much more direct, which is what Billie has does a great job writing in the past. The trilogy was off in a lot of places for me, but it wasn't all bad. Brutal Love is just one of those songs where I will never understand its hype.

AlissaGoesRAWR
This post couldn't be more right. Seriously, the first time I heard Dry Ice I was just like : Oh, and I wasn't a trilogy guy. I thought Tré was alright though. I love Billie's cheesy teenager songs. They're the best. I think that's why I enjoyed Fell For You and Missing You on the trilogy — definitely similar in theme, even if they're extremely polished compared to the older stuff. I think Tré was definitely the best of the bunch, too, although if they would've whittled down their trilogy to just one album, it probably could've been a pretty decent record (with some better recording, of course). I was listening to Demolicious again today and I couldn't help but get angry at the wasted potential. Demolicious is pretty fucking good. DookieLukie
I love Brutal Love. It was the first Green Day song since Blvd to hit me the first time I heard it. I just remember getting that feeling like I was just discovering music for the first time when I first heard the leak of it. The welling up of warmth in the chest, the reactive smile, the lightheaded rush, and the building mood boost of hope all made this song something truly memorable for me. The lyrics hit home and I think they really on point. Any vagueness is there for a reason in my point of view. It's just so utterly desperate and beautiful. I don't really care that the initial melody sounds like another song. The ending is utterly brilliant and it's just one of those songs that inspires the same emotions I get from all the Green Day greats.
AlissaGoesRAWR
The only things I remember about seeing Brutal Love played live: the lighting was beautiful, Billie looked absolutely gorgeous (and extremely sweaty ) and the bass drums were SO LOUD I could hear them pounding in my chest. Oddly enough, I don't care for the song, but it's one of the few songs I can still distinctly remember being played live. Probably because I thought it was going to be their last song, until they surprised us with Good Riddance at the end. <3 But yeah, I dunno, the studio version builds but too slowly, and it just does little to nothing for me. The filters really kill that one too. His voice sounds so out of place next to a fucking string section.
