Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

Oh no no no no, that wasn't at all what I was doing, I was just emphasizing my own so. I didn't even notice your use of it. Please don't take that as mockery, because that was the absolute furthest thing from my mind.

Clearly I haven't finished training you in the ways of being a comedic bastard.

I like Haushinka but it gets repetitive, which cheapens the melodic value, for me. Perhaps it needs another verse or something, but lyrically it doesn't go anywhere. And it sounds straight off of Kerplunk (where it would have been a better fit) the song just doesn't jive with the rest of the album.

Haushinka teases with repetitiveness but once it gets to that punchy, emotional bridge, it's fucking wonderful and everything feels cohesive by the end. That's definitely one of my top Green Day songs ever.

Haushinka and All the Time are actually in my top twenty Green Day songs. Haushinka might even crack the top ten. It's one of their best songs for guitar and drums, and the melody and emotion are *so* good.

It took me a while to really like Haushinka, but it is very good. And I never doubted how great All the Time is.

In a (likely vain) attempt to put this thread back on track, an unpopular opinion:

Nimrod is overrated. It's a jumbled up mess of an album and Nice Guys Finish Last and Take Back are two of the worst songs they have

I'd like to clarify that I only repped this post because I approved of your goal (ending the spam), not of your opinion :P

If we're going to talk about repetition actually being good then hello Uptight. It's clearly one of their best songs and there's no denying that structure is just bizarre.

I think Nimrod is great as an album. The variety of different sounding songs pulling you in different directions is part of its charm, but I don't think it's totally incohesive. As well as the general "Green Day sound", there's a subtle kind of retro/surfy sound running through it that makes things feel connected, cemented particularly well by Last Ride In giving you a tongue in cheek relaxing surfy interval in the middle of the energetic twists and turns of the other songs.

There's other little things about the structure that make the songs better as an album than individually as well, for example the contrast between Last Ride In and Jinx, Jinx and Haushinka running together almost like one song, the delightfulness of going from Take Back to King For A Day to Good Riddance, probably their three most different sounding/surprising songs so far at that point back to back, and the deliberate move of almost but not quite going for the obvious choice of making a slow ballad called Good Riddance the last song. Unlike Shenanigans which is a pretty much random collection of b-sides where I wouldn't particularly care what order they were in, Nimrod feels like a thoughtfully structured album to me, with the wide variety of the songs working as part of the structure.

I'm not sure if these are unpopular or not, but...

1) Shenanigans should have wwayyy more credit as a legitimate album. Maybe their initial marketing for the album failed and it's been tossed aside ever since. But it's right up there with Nimrod in my eyes.

2) 8th Ave Serenade is amazing and so is Sex Drugs & Violence....I dont think anyone has ever agreed with me on this.
Nightlife is fucking great and only because of that bassline. So, good for them.

3) It is disappointing to know that there will never be another round of touring quite like 2009/2010. When mike basically said that he didn't like playing Christie Road and old songs live lately, it made me die a little inside. I've been a fan for 9 years and have still never seen them live (and should have when I was a kid).

4) There are two different types of FHT fans - those who call them FHT from 2008 and those who call them FBHT from their later tours and TV appearance. And I think there's a difference in the way fans are nostalgic about those eras. Difficult to explain, but chances are if you don't remember calling them the Tubbies(OR THE FOXIES HOLY SHIT) , I dont like you.

5) Dookie was my least favorite GD album for years. I still don't know if that was due to being an oppositional teenager or being more caught up in 39/smooth to care.

6) "When It's Time" was an amazing live track, and the recorded version was god awful in comparison. This goes for Stay the Night and Drama Queen as well.
Fuck Time makes me want to rip my hair out. The fun was just sucked right out of that song as soon as it was recorded. Personal Opinion.

7) The Broadway musical was good...I guess. But definitely not the lovely musical that I visualize when hearing AI or 21CB.
I kind of like to pretend like it doesn't exist so it won't corrupt my own take on the albums. Unfortunately :/

Oh also hello everybody! So much for being my first forum post :P nice to meet you all!

Welcome! To comment on a few:

1. I like the songs on Shenanigns a lot but I think it's fair enough that it doesn't get much credit as a legitimate album because really it's not, it's random b-sides from different years collected together. I doubt they would have expected it to be more successful as it's meant more as a bonus for fans who want to hear all their songs than as a proper album. It is great for what it is though, there's some brilliant songs on there (You Lied and Desensitized are my favourite) that probably don't get the praise they deserve due to being on there rather than other albums.

2. I agree, particularly 8th Avenue Serenade! It's really an amazing song, love the lyrics and it's second only to Brutal Love on Tre for me.

3. I wouldn't worry about that too much, I think he was speaking very specifically about the small shows they were about to play in order to debut their brand new material that hadn't been released yet (something they hadn't done since the early days of the band which they were obviously very excited about) rather than making a general statement. He was just saying there's some times you want to say fuck the old stuff and just play the new stuff. They've played plenty of old stuff since then and they're always saying how much they enjoy it.

And same for me with 7 haha

Yeah I get that, it makes more sense given the context.

(Are they still touring? I'm hideously behind on this stuff). I just feel like there's a certain energy missing this time around.

Or maybe my expectations have built up for too long and they need to come back to Florida already! :fool:

They toured last year and the beginning of this year, they're on a break now though. I assume when they make a new album they'll tour again. I thought they were great when I saw them last year (and they even played Dookie in full so I don't think they have a problem with playing old stuff!), so I expect them to continue to be great when they return.

You're a brave one :P welcome!

I have a deep, dark affection for Nightlife as well, like you said, that bass is awesome! So catchy and irresistible. And, I'm right there with you on the 2009/2010 tours. Best live Green Day, ever.

8th Ave Serenade is a great song but much better live. I remember hearing it at the Echoplex and thinking "Holy shit, this is so catchy." Same with Kill the DJ though.

Also, that comment about the Tubbies is perhaps the most peculiar instance of pretentiousness I've ever read. For a side project band with one album and hardly even a tour, I'd say it's awfully dumb to call people old and new Tubbies fans.

when they make a new album they'll tour again

So they will never tour again? Darnnnn

I've always called them "The Tubbies" in conversation, and I hadn't a clue who they were in 2008  I found out about them in 2012.

Wow you didn't get into them in 2008? You're a fan of the "new" Tubbies then, and not a real fan if I should say so myself.

I truly am a scummy new fan. I've only ever listened to "Stop Drop & Roll," NEVER any of their older stuff. I am ashamed :(

I bet your favorite Tubbies song is "Fuck Time" with the original lyrics. I bet you think DOS is better than Stop Drop and Roll.

Honestly if you didn't know about the Tubbies right away and didn't buy their album on opening day and didn't see them at that one live show they played ever then you're not a real fan.

I thought this obsession with "pure real fandom" died when Steven got banned but seemingly not. Oh, GDC, thou are so full of surprises

Nothing to do with being a "true fan" or whatever but it is true that following the Tubbies/Foxies when they first came out as a surprise and then went on tour and the Rev was posting messages on their Myspace after each show and stuff was really great. GDC/GDA got new banners and became the "Foxboro Hot Tubs Community/Authority", loads of people from here went to see them on the tour and it was so much fun, a really great time to have joined GDC and the most exciting time to be a fan of FBHT since they were doing so much. Can definitely understand having a special and nostalgic feeling for that time.

I love how people still call him Steven when that's not anything close to his name :P
