The bassline of Sassafras Roots is infinitely superior to that of Longview. Discuss.

J.A.R bassline is better.

It's not that I dislike the Longview bassline. Obviously it's epic. But it's also lethargic and repetitive. Sassafras Roots has real power, a ton of energy, a lot of variety and is just the most fun thing in the history of the world to play. On a technical level it's unquestionably better than Longview. Plus it's a lot more melodic.

That's the point, isn't it?

Ah, Unpopular Opinions thread, oh how I've missed thee :hug:

As for Longview vs. Sassafrass Roots - two great basslines which serve different purposes for two very different songs and can't really be compared.

The Longview bassline captures the essence of the song perfectly. It is just as repetitive, brain melting and occasionally annoying as it should be. For the song is about boredom, frustration and repetition. So the bass part suits it perfectly. It isn't that spectacular when you take it out of its context but as it is it's perfect.

I'll accept that it's perfect for the song, but you all know how I feel about the song :P There's no denying it's one of the best basslines of all time, and is obviously instantly recognisablable, but I still prefer Sassafras Roots. It's so much more fun and energetic.

And yes, I'm leaving "recognisablable" in this post because it's one of the best autocorrects ever and my new favourite word.

If we take all of the albums Green Day has ever produced, International Superhits! is easily the best one. Having all those amazing hits on one CD was a fantastic idea. I really can't think of one song on it I don't like.

They need to make another greatest hits album. Now seeing that there are several fan favorites that aren't singles ("Burnout", "2000 Light Years Away") and even recent releases that weren't singles that people seemed to like ("Stay the Night", "Nuclear Family"), it would be very interesting to see the tracklist.

i think making another greatest hits album wouldn't be the greatest idea right now. It maybe just shows that they're relying on old songs of theirs to get sales up. Maybe let them "prove themselves again" to those stupid critics, then release a greatest hits, with fan favourites.

Obviously best of collections are objectively looking better than albums. That's the point. But who really needs them? Everyone really into a band buys the albums anyway, and often the track lists of those collections are heavily flawed. The goodness of a song is subjective. It makes sense if many of their best tracks were excluded from the studio albums, but even in that case singles collections are much better. But the only ones who really need best of collections are those who are a) just getting into the band (and nowadays even they have youtube and all, not to mention Spotify) and b) those casual listeners not enough into the band to buy the whole discography.

If Green Day released a best of-collection now, it would be deemed as a sign of extreme washed-upness and hopeless nostalgia. I fail to see what good it would do, but get them some publicity, but what's the worth of it alone? A band's goodness isn't proportional with its popularity and that is, by the way, why I fail to see what harm it would do if Green Day never became as popular as they were in the past? Considering their age and music style that's very likely. But it doesn't necessarily mean that the quality of their music would get worse.

Not to mention they really haven't put out enough material to justify a second greatest-hits collection. We have AI, which had five platinum singles, and 21CB, which had five decently performing singles. And then for the Trilogy, there's Oh Love, Kill the DJ, Stray Heart and The Forgotten, only one of which charted well. You really can't call it a greatest-hits compilation when nearly a third of the material wasn't remotely a hit.

Longview's bassline is on full display during the song, making it better in my opinion. Sassafras Roots could have a more technical one but you can't really pick it up as easily in the mix.

I never noticed the bassline in that song until I played RockBand. I can only hear it now because I know to listen for it.
