Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

Not so much an opinion as something that I hope will lead to discussion of opinions: what d you think is their strongest single to date? I lean toward a three way tie between Good Riddance, BOBD and WICA. They've written better songs, but as hit singles and radio standbys those are just perfect.

American Idiot. There are far better songs on the album, but in terms of impact and summing up the general feel of the album, as well as the band's change of direction/sudden renewed focus, it was spot on and did exactly what it needed to.

I say BOBD because it is their most successful single, award wise. Plus, it charted on multiple charts, including the Adult Contemporary. Which showed it had broad appeal.

Define "strongest?" Biggest commercial success? Most lasting air time? Recognizability? Ability to sum up an album? Catchiness as a single track? Increasing album sales? Attracting new fans? There are way too many subjective ways to define what the "best" is, I'm afraid!

If forced to refine it, I would say a combination of musical quality, airplay value, and ability to sum up an album.

Gah, I'd say BOBD based on the first two but it doesn't really sum up an album. Neither does Good Riddance, my second choice. Haha... I should've just said BOBD without any stipulations. I feel like GD has a habit of often picking singles that are outliers to an album, which makes sense I guess, given that the true fans are going to pick up the album anyway. May as well attract some new ones with a slightly different sound.

Either AI or Basket Case, I'd say. Both of them are summaries of the entire feel of their albums, and they're great songs.

If we go by charting it'd be BOBD WICA and then Good Riddance as Good Riddance never was at #1 (at least going by Wikipedia)

Tre's drumming on 21CB is completely boring and uninspired compared to the rest of Green Day's discography. Conversely, Mike's bass on it is a step up from AI.

Nah, they're both crap on both AI and 21stCB, at least compared to everything they'd done before. Aside from Tré's drum solo on JOS (which isn't really that technical and my brother had it nailed after about 6 months of drumming), and Mike's 10 second bassline on EJN, they barely do a thing that's worth mentioning.

Tre was in process of divorce, meeting with layers.

I hate the production on J.A.R. The drums are incredibly thin and it lacks so much of the power the AAF version has.

You just ruined that song for me. :(

I also can't quite figure out why a band like U2 would give away an entire album, unless there is another one coming up.

1) Apple paid U2 for the album and then gave it away. U2 didn't lose anything.

2) Apparently there is another (related) album coming at some point.

Consider it my vicarious revenge for Tom ruining AI for me. :P

Seriously though, sorry. :( At least we still have the AAF version!

The bassline of Sassafras Roots is infinitely superior to that of Longview. Discuss.

You keep saying that and I have yet to notice anything special about it. And believe me, I've tried. I really want to understand, but I just can't.

This probably has been said before but the oh love video is seriously the worst thing GD have ever produced - I am embarrassed to watch it - that's probably why it has had so many hits on youtube.

It's very good, but I don't know about better. Longview has a much more memorable bassline, plus you can sing it.

j.a.r needs to be re-recorded and released on a new album.

Can we at least get a studio version of Cigarettes and Valentines (the song) first?

Put it on an ep with the re recorded jar

You just got to find new ways to put Longview down, right  ?

I just liked this because I love Sassafras Roots. There's no way I have enough knowledge of basslines to actually consider whether you're correct in saying this. :P

It's not that I dislike the Longview bassline. Obviously it's epic. But it's also lethargic and repetitive. Sassafras Roots has real power, a ton of energy, a lot of variety and is just the most fun thing in the history of the world to play. On a technical level it's unquestionably better than Longview. Plus it's a lot more melodic.

Again, I just fucking love that song. I have no real concrete arguments as to why, other than it's catchy as hell, fun, not overplayed and I enjoy the lyrics/message very much.

I don't get why it isn't more loved, it's utter perfection.
