I lean toward a three way tie between Good Riddance, BOBD and WICA. They've written better songs, but as hit singles and radio standbys those are just perfect. American Idiot. There are far better songs on the album, but in terms of impact and summing up the general feel of the album, as well as the band's change of direction/sudden renewed focus, it was spot on and did exactly what it needed to. 2 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I say BOBD because it is their most successful single, award wise. Plus, it charted on multiple charts, including the Adult Contemporary. Which showed it had broad appeal. Biggest commercial success? Most lasting air time? Recognizability? Ability to sum up an album? Catchiness as a single track? Increasing album sales? Attracting new fans? Gah, I'd say BOBD based on the first two but it doesn't really sum up an album. Neither does Good Riddance, my second choice. Haha... I should've just said BOBD without any stipulations. I feel like GD has a habit of often picking singles that are outliers to an album, which makes sense I guess, given that the true fans are going to pick up the album anyway. Aside from Tré's drum solo on JOS (which isn't really that technical and my brother had it nailed after about 6 months of drumming), and Mike's 10 second bassline on EJN, they barely do a thing that's worth mentioning. The drums are incredibly thin and it lacks so much of the power the AAF version has. You just ruined that song for me. I also can't quite figure out why a band like U2 would give away an entire album, unless there is another one coming up. 1) Apple paid U2 for the album and then gave it away. I just liked this because I love Sassafras Roots. There's no way I have enough knowledge of basslines to actually consider whether you're correct in saying this. Sassafras Roots has real power, a ton of energy, a lot of variety and is just the most fun thing in the history of the world to play. On a technical level it's unquestionably better than Longview.
