Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

It's kind of weird that Billie puts depressing lyrics in songs that sound like you're in fucking Disneyland.

Let's give an example :

"Blood, Sex and Booze"

"Throw them to the dogs, let them eat my flesh down..."

Jesus, and the melody is so damn amazing. I get it, he could put that in one of his unreleased norwegian black metal songs, but in BSB - it just doesn't fit.

If you think that's weird you should listen to Springsteen.

It's a part of its charm.

Everything BUT a charm.

Disturbing lyrics and nice melody? That's like playing Justin Bieber's songs on sitar and maracas.

I love that whole technique, it's dark in its own way and I think it heightens the impact of the lyrics. Especially coming from Yorkshire where everyone is "stiff upper lip" and repressed emotions, so putting something negative across in a light way is something I can really connect to. I don't think it's even particularly true of Green Day in general though, but it's something Bruce Springsteen and the Gaslight Anthem have built their careers around.

There has to be something else those artists built their careers around, since I like both of them.

Come on, all sad songs don't have to be slow and the dark ones can sound cheerfully. If they did some of them would

drop-dead boring and made lots of things sound the same. This technique broadens the variety of things you can do with your melody. Also it adds a certain feel I really love.

A good example of that is Chump - it sounds cheerful and light, but it's about random hatred.

When any unpopular opinions haven't been posted for nearly a week, you know GDC is dying.

Seriously, though. Do not go gentle into that good night, GDC!

I know! Someone needs to do something or soon this place is as dead as stone. We must do something  Honestly.

We've got to take Billie, Mike and Tre hostage and force them to record a live-in-the-studio album.

Yes! We must gather all our brethren and sisters! GDC needs action and action shall be given! We all must sacrifice ourselves and our time for the community before it's too late

I'm not a big fan of Warning (song or album).

It is my second favourite album of theirs, sir. Would you state the reasons for your unholy blashemy, if ye be willing, yer dissappearness Nickness?

Being the most massive admirer of the album, even I must admit Warning as a song includes a blatantly recycled riff, and a generic chorus and so does not impress me that much.

Warning is a weird one in that I love it even though it's the most repetitive song in the world. It's not even a riff, it's just a straight run up and down the scale. But I love it. And those lyrics are fantastic.

Warning the album is my third-favorite of theirs and remains one of my go-to late summer/early fall albums. It's obviously more subdued than its predecessors, but I for one love the more folk-rock feel that dominates it.

I agree that the song is one of the weakest on the album, but I still enjoy it. And as noted, the lyrics are great (is it true that they're all slogans Billie took from billboards and bumper stickers?).

I respect the fact that they went in a different direction, but the whole acoustic/'folk punk' thing isn't for me. Misery and Minority are great, Blood Sex and Booze is good too, but the others are just fairly average. In general, the album just isn't to my taste.

But as Mike said 'Green Day is like sex, when we're good, we're good, but when we're bad, we're still pretty damn good!'

Also, Dissappearingness Nickness is gonna be a new member title. If I were inclined to change my username, I'd change it to that

I'd love another acoustic folk punk album. I'll never get over how awesome Misery is. Green Day should collaborate with Gogol Bordello :woot:

You are just the worst kind of person.

Now the thread is deserted except for some kelp

And a piece of an old rep that lies on the shore

You always responded when I PM'd your help

You gimme a user title and a key to the door.
