Blasphemy & Genocide: Unpopular Green Day Opinions, Part 2

there is plenty Billie and the band can draw from for inspiration, considering Billie's rehab and Mike's wife being sick.

That's part of the reasoning. I don't want dark songs that would come from there, I'd prefer happy songs. I think we have enough dark songs from Green Day.

I fucking love pretty much all of Nimrod., but the second half is definitely not quite as good as the first half. Take Back and Walking Alone just don't measure up, and Reject isn't an especial favorite of mine.

I agree, although I do like Reject, it's in no way a stand out track but I do like it!

Well you've just had about 37 of the kind :D

I can't imagine not wanting new material from this band! I crave it.

I think Mike and Tre have more left to offer than Billie, but it's not like any of them are burning out.

How so? Billie basically writes all the songs so I'd say he pretty much has the most to offer by default.

I think one of Green Day's greatest qualities is taking darker subject-matter and putting it in a song that sounds almost joyful. Like smiling and flipping someone off at the same time.

They've done it marvelously their whole careers.

Agreed! Besides, they all live full and varied lives and will always have both good and bad experiences/thoughts etc to draw on, can never predict exactly what mood their songs will be just from the limited information we have about their lives.

Most of my songs on my happy playlist aren't Green Day. I'd like there to be more Green Day on there, but the darker lyrics with fun music still doesn't cut it.

I think (and if I'm incorrect than may Tom smite me) that he was referring to the fact that Billie has shown us what he's got to this point. Sure he could have 10 songs that reach genius-level left in his reservoir but it's still a skill he has shown us up to this point in GD's career. Mike and Tre haven't really let loose since Insomniac IMO so I think there is more they could do that would surprise us, if that makes sense

I think it's silly to assume they can't produce brilliant music again just because the Trilogy was a failure, I'm actually really eager to see what direction they take next, and see if they can commercially redeem themselves.

Having the biggest role in the creating process doesn't necessarily equal having the most to offer creatively. If anything, I'd imagine he's burned himself out writing so much material (as the Trilogy's recycled chord progressions indicate :ninja:).

But that's just not what Green Day is.

Of course, I could help you form that happy playlist :whistle

I think the lyrics were more of an indicator, seeing as chord progressions alone rarely change for GD anyway

If you want to  Hearts Collide and I Was There are probably the best Green Day I can think of for my criteria

Yeah, but let's face it, I'll never be able to persuade Hermione that the Trilogy 's lyrics are bad, so I have to work with what I've got. :P

Hey, you got yourself a pretty little mouth

I think I wanna rub it the wrong way

Do you wanna spin a bottle, play a game of chicken?

Well, it's a tongue twister till your lips are bleeding

Oh, anyhow, anywhere

Kiss me there, oh kiss me there

Oh, scream and shout, truth or dare

Kiss me there, oh kiss me there

Oh, you're so precious, you're a fucking delinquent

Well I got myself jonesin' and I need some fixin'

It's a makeout party on another dimension

And it's gonna get crowded with some bad intensions

Edit: azlyrics spelled "intentions" wrong, not me ;)

God, as I never listen to Dos I'd forgotten just how heinous that was. *runs to take a shower*

That's exactly the point really, but I have a different take on it. Billie has been kind of dominant in recent years, especially on AI and Breakdown, and it's seemed more like Mike and Tre are just his backing band. The pair of them are utterly fantastic musicians, especially as a unit, and personally I'm looking forward to whatever they do next in the hope we get some awesome musical moments out of them rather than necessarily for songs themselves, yknow? Given that they've been so restrained for such a long time I think they have more to offer than Billie at this point, and that's not even taking anything away from him.

Ahh I see what you mean. Yeah, there's definitely a lot of potential for them to shine with their respective instruments.

It seems like I'm one of the few people who likes the second half of Nimrod then. Haushinka to Good Riddance is a brilliant run of songs.

Oh no, I still love it--Hauschka and Prosthetic Head are in my top 15, and KFAD and GR are obviously fantastic. It just doesn't quite measure up to the first half.

What's GREEN?

The first half is damn good too. In fact the whole album is damned good! The only songs I'm not too bothered with are Last Ride In and Prosthetic Head.

Mike and Tre are one of the best rythym sections in the business.

I'd go so far as to argue they're in third place behind Geddy Lee and Neil Peart and John Deacon and Roger Taylor.

Remember when green day covered swing swing by the all american rejects?

Doesn't the original song sound slow to you guys? I feel it should be faster.
