Hermione
When someone asks me who are the members of GD I always say Billie, Mike and Tre. They are the official GD members. Jason is not. Who says that though? There's no list of "official Green Day members" anywhere lol. I agree with you that's he's not as much of a member as them so to speak (as he plays a smaller role in the band), but it's not as black and white as "official" and "unofficial", the band themselves have chosen to make it more of a grey area. The band aren't bothered about labeling him so I don't really see why fans feel the need to do it so strongly.
Spike
Generally speaking the whole official vs unofficial thing is totally fair enough, but it's a different matter when it comes to Green Day. They've always blurred the lines between session musician and band member when it comes to Jason White and, to a lesser extent, Jason Freese. I don't understand the need to get so hung up over it.
bagelfeet
No one in Green Day is an "official" member, they're all just members. But there's no rule that all members of Green Day have to play the same role in the band....Jason's is clearly still not on the exact same level as the others but who said it has to be. It is slightly annoying when people insist he's called an "official" member or worse say he "was announced as an official member" (when and where was this announcement?), deny there's any difference between him and the other three and expect him to suddenly play the exact same role as them, when really he's been part of the band for years and his role has just naturally and gradually got bigger with no labels or fanfare involved and it doesn't have to be exactly the same as the other three's roles unless they feel like it. They do say that they decided on adding Jason as an official member in Cuatro
Hermione
They do say that they decided on adding Jason as an official member in Cuatro Really?! You don't happen to know when abouts in it they say that do you? Usually people post that quote of Billie casually referring to him as a "fourth member" in an article when claiming he was "announced as an official member", don't think I've seen an actual quote of them saying anything more concrete than that. I haven't watched Cuatro in a while, but there is literally a whole section of the movie called "Cuatro", explaining how he is so integral to the band and how they chose to induct him as "Cuatro". Popular Post The Disappearing Boy
Remember that Green Day has had Jason longer than they haven't had him, so that's gotta count for something.Anything on 21CB doesn't count. You must leave this place and never return.
Sauli
21st Century Breakdown is their second best album ever It would be even better than Warning without the bloody awful Christians Inferno
Certified Nimrod
Lukie is right I don't see Jason as an official gd member either. Ugh. When someone asks me who are the members of GD I always say Billie, Mike and Tre. They are the official GD members. Jason is not. I say Billie Joe, Mike, Tre, and Jason. WhiteTim
Plus Jason is listed as member in the trilogy booklet if he was just an additional guitarist he'd been listed under addition musician part

DookieLukie
Billie did say in Cuatro that Jason was a fourth member, but Billie says a lot of things he doesn't mean. Example: 99 Revs is the best song he's ever written...or how he always says the next album will be "live" feeling and then doesn't deliver. Also, Jason wasn't exactly on any magazine covers or in any interviews during the leadup to Uno, which should be something a main member does. I grew up with the Green Day trio. I see Jason as an important side member, but I'd rather not have him as a main band member.

He's been with them full time since the Warning tour, and I don't see him going anywhere anytime soon.
Hermione
The thing is he doesn't have to either be an official member on exactly the same level as Billie Mike and Tre or not in the band. It isn't that black and white. The four of them are totally chilled about it so I dunno why people have to insist it's one or the other. Steven Seagull
Well we don't see him as an official member. Why do you bother saying that he is, if it doesn't mather if he is or he's not.

I just find it silly to have the need to label him in such a black and white way when he and the band don't.
Malleus
I think if you had to pick some concrete option, he's a fully-fledged member of the band. But he's happy being outside of the spotlight but still involved somehow with the process, so I agree with Hermione. It's exhausting for both sides to argue over his membership status when at the end of the day, we're really the only ones who care. But I mean I get why it's constantly brought up in threads - it feels like it should be a bigger deal than it is.
The Disappearing Boy
If he writes and records with them in the studio - full time - he's an official member.
Hermione
Not that I think it matters in terms of whether he's a member of the band, but didn't someone find that Jason isn't credited for writing on the trilogy while Billie Mike and Tre are? In the booklet it just says music by Green Day so there's no way to know from that but I think there's a site where these things are listed, who gets royalties for writing on albums and stuff. Akshat Jain
no matter, if he doesn't have written the lyrics, but i'm sure, he has contributed a lot in making those insane guitar solos
